today i'm going to show you the best way to count your open liquor bottles when taking inventory as well as the worst way to do it because if you're doing it the worst way your counts and cost percentages are going to be way off all right how's it going today i'm dave allred the real bar man here from varpatrol.net therealbarman.com for those of you who don't know me yet when it comes to inventory well i'm sort of a big deal no i'm just kidding of course but i have been in the industry for more than 30 years now i've been running bar patrol my bar inventory business for the past 11 years and i've counted thousands of inventories myself and i've helped hundreds of bars master their inventory and lower their poor cost percentage by a large margin so one of the things that people want to know most when it comes to bar inventory is how do you count the open liquor bottles and get an accurate reading well there are a couple of options and you might already know about them but let me show you how important it is that you do this correctly alright so let's head to my trusty powerpoint presentation tool so that i might provide you with some visualization uh so we're gonna start with the most traditional method dating back to the 9th century bc when squires and serfs were required to count the king's inventory all right no but seriously it's an outdated method that has been used for a long time so let's take a look at an example i'm just going to get out of the way here okay so let's start with point counting okay and let's take a common brand bottle of jack daniels and let's put the little marks here here's what you do in your point count uh if you haven't done it before you're basically guessing how much is in the bottle based on increments of tenths okay so if i think it's about right here i would guess six tenths of a bottle okay the problem is your six tenths is different from my six tens guess i might put it at seven tenths or something else so there's about a ten to fifty percent margin of error here which is huge that's uh that's ouch okay and with this bottle of jack daniels it's square you know it's pretty proportionally correct but what about these other bottles like don julio 1942 where it's fat along the bottom and then it gets skinnier toward the top how do you point count that and how do you determine how much is in the bottle and then we get these other bottles like bailey's or class a soul you can't even see the liquid line because they're opaque or completely solid so you can't see so you end up shaking the bottle and you have no idea how much is...
