[Music] so today we're going to go a little bit more a little deeper into pen making we're going to talk a little bit about blank making and the blank that we're going to look at today is what i call the steampunk penny blank it's one of my favorite pens to make here i've got a little picture for you and what it is it's a steampunk technique and after that we're going to look a little bit about how to bend things and get them around the pen to do some embedded casting but whatever we talk about in here can be applied to a many different pens and we'll get into that as we do the video so with that let's immediately get started and let's take a look at how i make the steampunk penny pen okay so for this video what we're going to do is we're going to take a look at everything we need to do to create one of these steampunk penny pens and the blanks i'm not going to get into casting right now but we're going to get into all the preparation for everything that you're going to do here and the techniques are going to be the same for a lot of different things that you can do so if you're not really into doing the penny and you just want to do a steampunk pen here's a nice steampunk pen done the exact same way and then these techniques are going to be the exact same techniques that we would do to do like a watch parts pen and how we want to do the gears on the watch part this one's on carbon fiber so it's a little bit different but if you're looking to do any of this stuff the techniques that you're going to learn in the next 10 minutes you're going to cover it so we're going to need some real standard items here first you're going to need the tubes that you're going to be working with so in this case i've got it set up for a majestic then we're gonna need i use just standard duct tape so you can see here this is a scotch brand tape from 3m i literally get it right off of amazon we'll talk about where we get all this stuff in a few minutes i like to use copper tape on there so this is the exact same thing we're going to be doing this one this is off of amazon then to get that uh industrial dirty look to it so we want that that that look to it here we're gonna use ebonizing cream and so this is rub and buff this is that hobby lobby but i think you can get it on amazon then we're gonna need what i call a pounce wheel you're gonna get this at a fabric store um once again i think hobby lobby has this one you can get it in the um the materials department whether where you're gonna be doing some sort of fabric and fabric department i like to use off a protractor as my straight edge um don't ever tell my my daughter that you saw this video because i stole this from her years ago i use a cutting board i use some wax paper to just protect my surface we're going to use some standard paper towel we're going to use a few vinyl gloves because our hands will get dirty when we're going to be doing this so i'll pull out a full final gloves and then the final couple things i'm going to use some scissors these are plain scissors and then to trim the ends i like to use these um scissors i got from doing rc cars and you should be able to see the little thing on here that's going to give me a nice edge here to be able to cut and do the edges and then if we're going to want to do um the crush penny we're going to be doing a couple more things we're going to need to have some punches which are the size of our tubes and i'll get into that one and then finally this thing is called a jeweler's dapping block and you can see here if i give you a side profile when we get into it how we're going to be able to use this thing coming up also so and you'll need some sort of press i've got an arbor press i don't know that i'll be able to get into that part but we're going to cover it all so let's start out with the basics how we make one of the one of the blanks here for this pen and so let's start with the tube there's the tube that we're going to use it's the bottom of a majestic and so i'm just going to cut off a piece of the duct tape off the roll just so it's a little bit easier for me to demo how i'm going to do it you can see here if i try to do it this way it's too short so i'm going to cut it this way and i'm i'm not going to really worry about what i'm doing here i'm not going to be that precise and i'm going to show you why in a second so there it is i'm going to take this i'm gonna cut it cut it a little long so that'll give me something when i'm rolling it i've got a little bit of play in there when i'm doing it and the beauty of doing the steampunk is nothing should be really exact on here and so you know i'm not looking you know in other pens that i'm doing i'm looking for being very very exact on my cutting and this i'm not all that worried about it so i always do something very distinctive on mine i always put in two rows of rivets on the top and two rows of rivets on the bottom i don't know if you can see it on this pen but there you go there are my rivets rivets are real easy to get so i know that my tube is going in this way right so what i'm going to do is i'm going to take my protractor i'm going to come down a little bit and then i'm going to take my pounce wheel and i'm simply going to press down reasonably firm then i'm going to move over a couple i'm going to press down reasonably firm never go backwards you're never ever ever going to get it to come back in the same spot and so it's going to mess the whole blank up now i'm going to flip this over and i'm going to put some rivets on the top or on the bottom depending on which way i put it on so i'm putting it here taking my pounce wheel rubbing it in taking my pounce wheel and i'm putting a decent amount of pressure on it so now let's see uh sorry on the on the duct tape this is the back of the duct tape so now when you when i flip it over there you go i'm gonna i got some light playing in here but there you go there's the piece with the rivets in there okay so because i didn't want to have to make you sit there through watching me trial to get the corner off there you go i've peeled off some of the corner and now you can see here when i pull it off i've got it all off so i'm going to take this i'm going to just kind of fold it a little bit put it down here and then i'm going to lay my blank on here or lay my tube on here to get it to kind of line up i'm going to put reasonable pressure on it nothing spectacular then i'm going to take this and fold it back in i'm going to make sure that i don't have any air bubbles once again though on this you know you really don't have to worry if you've got any air bubbles i mean it is a steampunk pen it it's intended to have you know some industrial look to it so now i'm just simply going to take it i'm going to roll it and you can see there i got my rivets to line up got my rivets to line up i'm going to press it out and there's my blank i've got the rivets on there this little piece is a little scratch in the in the tape i'm not worried about it so now i got these ends here right what am i going to do with them you can see here i got a little bit of an end that's where i'm going to take these scissors and i'm going to just carefully work my way around that brass tube and there you go i've got a perfect end on that one now flip it over pull this off this one's got a little bit more on this side and i'm going to take this i'm going to cut it and now i got a perfect done on that side so now i've got the piece almost halfway done already so now i want to get this part of it this randomized copper tape on there same thing here's my piece of copper tape i'm going to simply take a piece i'm going to cut it here i'm going to put it with my pounce wheel again and my protractor i'm cutting on the back surface once again so you can see here i'm cutting on the back surface i'm going to make sure that i only go over it one way i never come back in the back direction so there's my first set i'm going to pull out just a little bit because you can see it did pull over a little when i was doing my cut so those are my rivets on here so much like i did on the other piece i am gonna take a second here let's see if i can get this to go a little quicker there we go so i've got it peeled off i got this little piece of tape peeled off and now i'm just going to randomly cut them to length and then when i cut them to length i'm going to take it and i'm just going to arbitrarily put it on so i'm going to cut another piece that piece is a little longer i'm going to randomly take it and put it on the other side i've seen people who have done it where they're very precise about it that's fine that's the look that they're going for that's just simply not the look that i'm going for you know i want that real industrial look to it like it's been there 30 years and had 100 repairs on it and um you know people haven't really taken care of it so that's that's the look that i'm going for very you know is the modern term that they call it now is steampunk so i'm just going to put some pieces on here so you can see here it's it's it's all over the place in terms of the riveting and and what my patches look like and and where they're at so now we want to get this this industrial look to it we want to we want to give it a little bit of um color and so you know i'm i'm going to do this here so i'm going to put on a glove and i think i'm only going to do half the blank so you'll get a better idea of what we're actually doing so i take a piece of my blue paper towel you know that i love blue paper towel for almost everything that i'm doing and now i'm going to take this rubbing buff it's ebonizing cream and i'm going to put just a dab of it on my towel so you can see here it comes out it's a little thick i mean it's not a real um liquidy type thing and then i'm just gonna dab it dab it on and rub it in so i'm dabbing it on i'm rubbing it in i'm trying to be careful not to pull up the copper tape that that i have on there so i'm just dabbing it on maybe rubbing it in a little bit putting it you know all over the place giving myself a not consistent feel to it so as i said i'm only doing half of it so so you should be able to see yeah you can tell a difference there and the more that i want to put on the darker it's going to get you can see on this pen i put on a lot to let the penny stand out this is actually steamboat willie as a penny that's sitting on there so that one i put on a little a lot this one i was a little bit easier on just give myself that little um little variance little scrapes things like that so now i can come back on here and i can just take a clean end of my paper towel put it on here and just dab off any excess that i don't want on there and this will get a little bit darker when we actually go to do casting but as you can see here especially on that side the difference in the color this is the this side is the untouched side besides the steampunk side and there you go if you were if you were done if you were only going to do steam pumpkin you would be done with this pen and you'd be able to ready to cast it and then when it comes out it's going to look something like this if you want to go that extra step and you want to add the crushed penny to it or you want to add some gears to it remember these are the gears that we added to this this mickey mouse watch pen these are some gears that i added to it so if i want to add the penny or the gears once again it's it's really simple what i'm going to do is i'm going to take an this is a harbor freight this is a punch set i use them for a lot of stuff and we can talk about that i use it as a disassembling tool i use them all over the place so what i do is i i find a punch here's the top of the tube that i would normally be working with and i find a punch that fits in there and i want to give it a little bit of loose play in there so then this way i can i like to over bend things just a little bit and then use my fingers to open it up so that when it presses on so you can see here this is ostensibly the the roundness that i want to do on anything that i'm going to put on here so now i'm going to take my dapping block my jeweler's dabbing block and you can see here this has got all the different little indentations and you try to find the one that fits the best and you can see here if i did that one it's got a gap so i know i know from having used this a million times that that's that's the spot that i wanted in so then what i would do is simply take my object this is a a penny and these can be watch gears these can be whatever you want it to be and i put it in here i line it up i take my punch and then i i unfortunately can't show you this right now i'll take a picture of what the arbor press looks like and then i'll put this on my arbor press and then when i press down with the handle on the arbor press the penny will go into that spot as it gets pressed down in and then when i pull it out there's the penny this is uh another steamboat willie penny and then you can see here that when i was to put it on the tube it's perfectly pressed to the diameter that i'm working with and then obviously i would steampunk this part i would use just a small dab of um super glue or in my case i use glue boost on it just to give me some adherence on it and then i would let it sit for a couple days i'm going to let the whole thing sit for a couple days um just because that's how i do things and then i'm going to get it to cast now you will have a problem i'm going to tell you is if you let these things sit too long this copper tape will have a tendency to pull up and so you don't want to let it go too long on it so in essence we're done what did we do as a recap i've taken my tube i've taken a piece of silver duct tape that i got from amazon i cut it i took my pounce wheel and put the tape on there use my pounce wheel to give me the pattern that i want only going over it once never going back then i did the same thing with the smaller copper tape and then i just you know randomly put a pattern on onto the the pen that i wanted to do i used rub and buff put the you know i rubbed the dirt on there and then i let the thing sit on there for a few minutes and then i rubbed it off and then if i wanted to put anything else on there it's just simply taking my arbor press putting it in pressing things down on here and getting you to pinch out the way you want things to go on here and then you're done now you're ready for casting so i'm not going to have time to talk about casting in this video but promise you we are going to talk a little bit more about clear casting at some point in the future so you can see there with the techniques that we learned it's a very simple process once you know the recipe so right in this video we use duct tape but there's nothing stopping you from using carbon fiber or a label as your backdrop embedding objects is easy what we're going to use is we're going to use a punch we're going to use the jeweler's dapping block and an arbor press and we're going to bend it onto whatever surface we want using the right punch there so with that i think we're done so as always i thank you for watching my video if you've any questions or comments please drop them in the part below i do follow up on every question or every comment that someone has if you have any ideas for any additional topics you want please put them below and i promise you i'll get back to you on those too and then finally if you enjoyed this video give me a like subscribe to my channel and i hope you have a good day thank you this video made possible by the
