hi everybody my name is Allison Whipple I am co-editor of the 2016 Texas poetry calendar with dos gatos press dos gatos went to online only submissions a few years ago using submit a bowl and one of their submission requirements is that all poems must be submitted as one document with a different home on every page now a lot of people not a lot we've gotten some questions you know every submission cycle about how do i do that I've never had to do that before so I thought I'd just make this little tutorial for you too so you can put it up on YouTube and if you you know bookmark it and if you need a ranaut whatever you need a refresher feel free so the first thing we want to do is we need to pick our poems so I'm just going to pull up three of my poems um and you know you know how to do this um and just to note i'm using word 2013 this method i'm going to show you is going to work no matter what you or the use open office or apple pages this is just about the most basic way to go do this and so it's going to work so i've got our three poems open right here um already there now we have to start a new blank document on doing that I hit the control and then I hit the envy you could also go into file and start a new document whatever you want to do so we've got our new document the first thing I'm going to do is save it so I hit ctrl s since it's totally unsaved it's going to take me to save as file name so I'm going to say this as a demo remember at least for the Texas poetry calendar no identifying information anywhere on the submission and that includes the file name so don't put your last name and/or your first name or any part of your name in your file name so it's it's saving um I'm actually an I've got that and that was just a formatting mark I'm going to turn that off for a minute back on in a bit so I'm going to make my first poem um and the first thing I want to you can click your mouse down and I'm sorry this formatting mark is on no worries you don't need to have that you can click and drag or you can hit the control key and then the letter A and then you either you right click and copy or you hit the control C button and then you can go and to your blank document and I hit the control key and then V for paste you can also right click and hit paste um however you want to do it that's fine you cannot even go on if you're in 2013 there's this nice little paste button right up here so that's our first page I'm going to hit now control s just to save save frequently they've often back up to multiple sources so now I actually I'm going to turn this formatting mark on for a reason so because I want you to see um this is sort of all like a little code word inserts on things so now we've got one poem on one page we want to do a second poem on a different page so we go to in 2013 and openoffice a lot of something similar insert page break you can also do blowing page I prefer page grade personally so when we scroll up we see the word is inserted this bit of code for page break and so I'm going to undo that really quick because one thing I see a lot and I also teach at ACC and I have people publish their own right you know do their own publications a lot of people who are unfamiliar with page breaks they start a new page by hitting the enter key and this is the signal this is the symbol for the unit they hit the enter key a bunch of times until they start a new page well that works and then i'll just type and then they'll do their new poem um the problem is um say you put this document together and then you want to change something say you want to add some new lines you know hypothetically well look what's happened so because we've hit enter and then added a bunch of lines this is just pushed the start of our new poem all the way down part way through the page that's not at all so I'm going to actually go and delete all of these enters and new lines and so what we do when we hit the when we do the when we actually insert the page break like so this creates a hard a little bit of code so um i'm going to type it and just type in this is just a placeholder it's the heading of our new poem so if i did go and um i'm just going to copy this and add a whole bunch of lines just just show you so say i did as we can see unlike when i hit the enter key this title here is staying in the exact same position that we wanted to so that's why you should always hit the page break and you notice if we actually go and add so much that it goes over the page which you would not do for the Texas poetry calendar this is just a journalize example it all it automatically inserts a new page break so that new poem always has its own line at the top of the page so we've got our page break so now he can probably extrapolate but I'm going to go through the whole process we want our second poem so I'm hitting ctrl a you can also you know drag and click whatever you want to do and then I hit I'm gonna I'm gonna hit copy up here just so you can see the different options and on my second page and then I'm just going to go home to home and hit paste again i'm going to say and then I'm going to UM I'll go and make sure and make sure you're gonna you're at the bottom of your poem when you insert your page breaks that your cursors accidentally here and you hit your page break well then you're going to have your last stanza on a different page so don't do that so you know make sure you're at the bottom of your poem insert page break go to your third column I'm hitting control hey I'm going to right click and copy and then again I'm going to hit control V that's just my preferred method is these key strokes so and then I save and look you have your poem um so I'm not actually going to turn off these formatting marks cuz you don't even see them anymore if you have them you know you're probably not going to turn them on at all I just for demonstration purposes so now look I have three poem three poems one poem on every page and no other some qualifying information so it's actually ready to go and submit um that's basically what you have to do to get 33 poems on each one on a different page and then what you would do is you would go into I'm since I'm a manager on the account I'm not sure it's gonna let me go through this um okay so um I'm gonna we're at the arduous it's just got those Prescott's at middle calm I got to it through the website and sign in and save and continue I'm not actually submitting to my own calendar this is just for demo purposes um we would go into choose files um and I saved this somewhere in my onedrive Cal demo too so I I just click there click open and now it is attached and all three files um all poems are you know that one document is there and then you fill out the rest of the information and click Submit and that's basically that so you can walk this as many times as you like um and you know pause and just try it over and over again I hope it has helped you I look forward to reading your poems have a good day
