hey freeze Jordan page from fun cheap or free calm here today we are going to talk about summer systems that are gonna save your sanity this summer as a budgeting and frugal living and productivity guru some of the most common questions I've been getting lately are girl how do you keep your kids entertained and save your sanity this summer and your wallet let me tell you a can be tricky summer can be rough but it doesn't have to be so today I'm gonna share with you what three summer systems that help keep your kids working hard keeps them accountable for their chores and allowance and activities and also finds timing your summer for fun hassle-free the three systems I'm gonna teach you about today are clipboards zones and bucket lists let us start with the clipboards we got five kids eight and under if your kids are anything like mine pretty much a hundred times a day you hear mom can I watch a movie mom can i play on your phone mom I'm so bored where's the iPad mom can I play the Xbox Jimmy gets to play xbox all day long could I please watch a show I'm so bored oh I got sick of being asked so I finally wised up and came up with a system that gives everybody autonomy and responsibility for whether they get screen time or not and it keeps the house clean keeps everybody in check what I kid you not I call it our clipboard system we also have a clipboard system during the school year for homework I will show you that once school begins but this is how our summer clipboards work our three older kids who are five six and eight they each get a clipboard our three year old has one as well hers is missing right now hers is very simplified and I'll show you that in a minute on their clipboard are their daily responsibilities but they have to accomplish every single day in order for them to have screens or playtime the list must be done so we encourage our kids to get them done first thing in the morning but if they take all day to do it then whatever so be it that's totally up to them they come down in the morning take grab their clipboards and they get started some of these things they can do without our supervision like getting dressed making the bed putting clothes away cleaning their room toward the bottom of the list these are things that they have to come to us to do reading for example they need to do that in the same room as us and they need to read out loud so we know that they're actually reading my five-year-old can not read yet hence the fact that his has clipart on it we have him do a BC Mouse which is a little reading program for 15 minutes but again he has to do that next to us because it's done either on the computer or on the iPad and both of those activities we like to supervise because with so much pornography floating around on the internet now you just never know what kids are gonna stumble upon each kid it says put clothes away what that means is if you go to my laundry system video I will link it below it went viral because it's kind of a crazy but extremely effective laundry system at the end of the night I usually have a basket of clothes for each kid so first thing in the morning they need to fold those clothes and put them away every kid has a zone even my three-year-olds and I will tell you about zones in just a minute chores sticks are basically our simplistic way of doing chores there are some days where we just know right off the bat towards that need to be done such as emptying the dishwasher maybe there's clothes or towels that need to be folded maybe there's a room that needs to be picked up whatever but a lot of times it's hard for me on the spot to come up with an age-appropriate chore for each kid so to make everybody's life easy I'll say I don't know just pick something out of the can so they'll come over to this cannon which just has plain popsicle sticks we have written different chores some are bigger than others scratch dad's back for 10 minutes okay looks like Bubba got a hold of the chore sticks here wash the windows put the balls away from the sport court outside put away the clean dishes pick up dog poop in the back yard and no we don't even have a dog anymore but we've got neighbor dogs wiping door handles mopping floors dusting anything that we can we put on a chore stick one thing we will do to adapt is we're going to have a big kid can and then a little kid can because obviously certain chores are more age-appropriate for kids for and younger and that's something we're gonna work on probably over the next day or two but anyway that's what keeps it simple they have to do two chores every single day and then lastly it says help with family zone I will explain family zones in just a minute these clipboards are really simple we keep them right here and then we keep dry erase markers in the drawer every night before they go to bed we wipe off the clipboards they start clean every single day so if they come to me and say mom can I watch a show all I have to say is is your clip we're done if it's not done the answer is no the pressures off of me the responsibility is on them this is also how we track allowance these are just responsibilities that have to be done as part of the family the kids get half their age per week in allowance and in order to get allowance they need out their clipboards done my daughter who's 6 for example half her age per week is $3.00 we do clipboards Monday through Friday we don't really worry about them as much on Saturday sometimes we do sometimes we don't basically for every day that the clipboard is done she gets her portion of allowance that day which is for her 50 cents per day if there's a day where she doesn't complete her clipboard she doesn't get her allowance for that day but if they want to earn money above and beyond half their age per week great we are happy for them to earn as much money as they want that's fine so they can come to us and say I would like to earn extra money what can I do we've got a whole drawer full of school books and workbooks they can do pages out at the workbook they will help us in the yard they'll do additional chores they'll work for neighbors whatever they want to do to earn extra money but this is a non-negotiable in order for any allowance at all this has to be done and they can't earn extra money unless their clipboard is done oh and I will say that we do adapt the clipboards per age so my oldest for example his is a little different he has a lot of the same ones up at the top but then because he's so Restless and because he's in several sports we added that he needs to do 100 shots throws or 100 kicks outside and then also he's in scouts so we want him to continue to work on his scouting book in the summer or three year old she pretty much has get dressed clean her room help with the family zone and chores and her daily chore is to water the plants on her front doorstep so that's kind of her little squares that we do for her quit because she's three he's working on his clipboard right now two chores bring over your clipboard I'll look at it oh and the way that screens work is once their clipboard is filled out we are still in charge of the screen time they earn 30 minutes of screen time by having their clipboard done and we choose when that is so we issue them the iPad or turn on the show or whatever it is and then we set the timer so it's regulated they don't just get free rein the whole day but wait there's more because I love you I have free printable versions of all of the charts I made for my kids in the description below so check it out all right that's four clipboards let's move on to the zones when it comes to zones we've got two sets the first set are what we call family zones the second set or for the kids so let's start with the kids owns the zones have to be done before they can have playdates or screens over here we have four zones that I have designated and then over here just kind of explains what each of the zone entails so backyard for example clean up the sandbox but all the equipment away make sure all the sheds are closed a mudroom is right there it's where we come in from the garage it gets really messy so they just need to help put shoes away there's also a bathroom in there and so they're in charge of keeping that bathroom cleaned because it's the bathroom the kids use and it gets nasty the kitchen and sunroom which is pretty much all of this here just like our main living space the pillows put on the couches if there's little toys that need to be put away miscellaneous stuff on the counters and then the car garbage is emptied maybe they'll wash the windows for us they'll vacuum it I just have these little mini clips with each of the kids names on them and then every week we rotate the zones then on their clipboard when it says clean your zone and come over and read this and see what their zone is for that obviously for Davi who is three we have to help her out a little bit we just adapt it to fit her age now the family zone this is a list of rooms or areas of our house or yard to have just gotten completely out of hand and I really want some help organizing them this summer we choose one per week this week we're focusing on the mudroom and then on the clipboards whenever it says help with the family zone we do what we call power a half hour and at some point in the day we'll set the timer for thirty minutes we'll turn on music and all of us as a family will clean up a sown together some days it is this specific zone off the list but some days it's like hey guys the kitchens a mess the zone today is the kitchen this has been amazing we're only two weeks into summer and already we've completely conquered some of these spaces that I expected would take a lot longer than a week so it's been really great all right so those are the zones now let me show you the last thing on the list which is the bucket list I am a huge believer in bucket lists we like to make a winter bucket lists around Christmastime but our favorite bucket list is our summer bucket list it does not have to be fancy you can jot it on a piece of paper you can write it on a poster board whatever I highly recommend making a list of fun things that you want to do or accomplish this summer with your kids maybe you're sitting around at breakfast or at dinner one day and everybody shouts out some ideas put it somewhere visual that the whole family can see and then throughout the summer it keeps you focused and it keeps you motivated because our kids for example will tell them hey you eyes at the end of the week let's keep working really hard on our clipboards and we'll choose a bucket list item to cross off this weekend let me show you our bucket list this is just a background that I found in canva and then I just added some text overlay and made our own little list and then I got this printed at Costco it was only $9.99 as you can see we've already been able to cross off several and it's been so fun for the kids to see all of the fun things that we have done so far one of the things that I really stress in productivity boot camp which is my productivity program is the idea of balance and that balance means being realistic and balancing real life sometimes we beat ourselves up as parents because in the summer we just feel like we're not entertaining our kids enough or that if they're bored that that's our problem that's not actually the case I think as parents it's important for us to learn to teach our kids how to be bored and if they are bored to go find something to do or if they come to us and say they're bored great we'll give them chores I think a bucket list is a really great way for you as a parent to know that sure we are gonna do some nice focused fun adventure activities as a family but then otherwise summers up to you kids if you want to watch screens or go play with friends great your clipboards over there how that if you're bored and you're just lying around the house you know where the arts and crafts supplies are use your imagination get outside whatever it is don't feel like it's up to you to decide whether your kids have fun or not this summer the bucket list is a great way for your family focused activities and then the other systems such as the zones and the clipboards are a great way for your kids to be structured and functional but still have freedom and autonomy all summer now for those of you with teenagers yes these systems can all work for you too from three on up to 18 just adapt it but if your teenagers want to go out with friends play on the xbox or whatever guess what they live in your house they have responsibilities too it's okay for them to have a daily list or a zone to complete before they get fun so there you go those are our summer systems what are yours share in the comments below the things that you do in the summer to stay sane and keep your kids occupied and organized and from killing each other be sure to subscribe and of course use the code youtube' to get 10% off my budgeting program or my productivity program both linked below alright gotta get going with the chores today I will talk to you guys soon there it is we're working on the motor room yeah
