hi and welcome I'm Tara Watterson a PhD candidate in communication at University of Kentucky and also a researcher who partners with community members on research I'm excited to share this resource with you today a research agreement template with some tips on how to use it the whole idea is to help you create more effective research partnerships I share this with you as I wrap up my 2018 year of community research a resource sharing campaign with other social science researchers interested in applied research and partnering with the community it's been my experience as a grad student that applied research and the how to's of it is kind of a figure it out as you go process so I wanted to bring us together to share ideas and resources before I turn to the research agreement template let me quickly share our accomplishments with the year of community research so you can check them out we collected common lessons learned by applied researchers and published them on my website we also celebrated five research partnerships between PhD communication researchers and their community partners I published profiles of their partnerships including the answers to questions like how did your research partnership get started and what challenges did you face and more also you sent in a number of comments questions and requests which led to sharing this resource so thank you for joining in the year of community research I hope we can continue the conversation into 2019 and beyond now let's take a look at that research agreement template first when to use this research agreements input this brief template was designed by compiling the best features of a number of research agreement templates that were sent to me from various social scientific researchers I worked with a mentor of mine and based on her and my experience we picked out the best features of these research agreements to create this one template to share with you one thing all of these researchers had in common is they were partnering with organizations in order to get access for data so I think this research agreement is going to be most useful in that context for example you're partnering with an organization who has agreed to send your survey out to their employees or a portion of their employees or some other stakeholder group that you're getting access to through this organization further this research agreement template is designed for you to bring it in at the early stages of this research partnership with this organization it will help you have those conversations to determine how you will partner in various stages of the research process and make those things clear now how you use this template download the research agreement template that you receive use this to create a written agreement that's signed by both you the researcher and your context at the partnering organization signing of the research agreement should be accompanied by some conversation and walkthrough the whole point here is to prevent misunderstandings to make expectations clear so you'll want to walk through it to make sure there are no misunderstandings and you're both on the same page about each element of the research agreement now I have a few tips for you as you develop you make use of this template for your own purposes tip number one carefully consider process and roles sure you've probably already considered a timeline for data collection data analysis manuscript development and hopefully if you've incorporated your research partner into that process so you have a realistic and reasonable timeline you also need to think about how they're going to be involved at the various stages of the research project consider is your research partner simply providing you access to collect the data and then bowing out will they be involved in other stages of the research project and if so how can you put boundaries in place to protect your researcher neutrality as you work with them at later stages further will your partner organization remain anonymous and result sharing or would they be identified as your partner for example when publishing a white paper or a case study tip number two anticipate roadblocks reading through this template should help you think through some of the situations that you and your research partner might face in the future one common roadblock that I've experienced I know other researchers have experienced is when your contact at the partnering organization leaves for another job then you as a researcher could be left with no options if no one else that the organization is interested in continuing this research for this reason you should consider a couple things try to recruit contacts in the organization at high levels who have the authority to give the green light on the research number to consider trying to recruit multiple contacts at the organization to protect yourself again in case one of them leaves for another position tip number three protect your data ownership ensure that it's clear to everyone that you as a researcher and you only are responsible for managing and owning the data the organization will not have access to raw data but depending on your agreement you might be willing to share the final aggregated results this is to protect your project as well as your participants per IRB finally tip number four be a proactive communicator with your research partner I think the research agreement that you all develop together should be viewed less as a binding legal document and more as a formal agreement process that makes expectations from both sides clear and transparent in fact you might find at later stages of the research project it'll be helpful to revisit the research agreement review what's been accomplished and looks to the next steps and what can be expected remember if you're partnering with non academics it's likely they don't know much about your work and the demands on you as a researcher to publish high-quality research being transparent about your roles and your goals I think can help your research partner understand where you're coming from and the importance of this
