so construction bids probably one of the most difficult parts about running a successful construction company is getting this bid dialed in and I know working for other companies it's almost like they keep this under lock and key like seems like a lot of people in my area don't want to give out any other numbers they don't want to share these trade secrets and then after you've run a business for a year or more you'll start to see why it's just kind of a disaster trying to crunch your own data and get accurate information so that you can put out accurate bid a couple problems first thing is you bid too high you're not going to get the jobs you don't get the jobs you don't get a certain amount of the jobs that you bid you're obviously not going to stay in business the next problem which is my worst problem is being the job too low if you chronically bid things too low then you're either not making enough money or you're not making any much if you're possibly losing money and there's a couple jobs where I've actually ended up having to pay money to be able to finish it and that's super frustrating especially in the first year one hard thing about getting accurate bids is bids are constantly changing Lumbergh costly changes prices I just had cost concrete go up like $15 a yard which fairly substantial increase stuff like that so the numbers that I had a year ago to base my my bids off of aren't accurate enough in this case everything's gone up higher gotten up higher by 15 plus percent across-the-board subcontractor fees material cost everything has gone up that much so if I messed up at the same price that I did it for a year ago there's no way I'd be able to finish the job my entire profit margin would be gone and of paying money to finish these jobs another thing with bids is they're fairly localized in southern Utah for example everything is a little more expensive suppliers are taking a little bit of advantage of the market right now we get tons of work so the up their prices the after price is it cost more for a house to be built here than it does in northern Utah even though it's in the same state it still costs more in the southern Utah so pretty much anyone will tell you that you need to have good historical data to be able to put out good accurate bids so the problem is when you're in your first year of business you don't have any data so so how do you get that data well that's a good question that's a good problem on my first probably six months or even maybe even more at least six months worth of work what I did is I went out and bid the job...
