Add countersign age
what we're going to be moving into now is our three interactive sessions one being aging on the hook and next after that we'll do a DRI queue and then after that habitat ramblings panel so first 30 minutes or so I'd like to introduce our panel so you guys know folks up here from our age this panel in the Claudia Michaels magazine but Eric long over here on my far left drubbing wild wildlife management Ohio gbma Ryan Basinger with Westervelt public services Ryan and myself our new panelist with age this in the magazine so we were all kind of getting involved with this and the way this will work I'm going to go through some introductory slides talk about aging on the hook the technique give you some examples and then we'll move into the testing part or the action will go through about 20 bucks adult bucks and you have five seconds for the crowd everybody these guys and the folks seconds weeks five seconds is like a real real life situation in the woods and get to vote these guys are going to be voting with their minds and the flash cards up front and everybody else has the voting pads in the audience all right so you're going to take a boat I'll give everybody up on stage a one two three count they'll reveal what they think it is and then I'll hit a button and everything on the screen will show up with your vote and what you think and it's anonymous so you're not going to get hurt Ted over here was worried that you don't allow beeping sound of you that's that's not the case all right this isn't gonna be a lot of fun so let's move into it I'm excited for this all right Beijing on the hook one of the most fun techniques that we're learning through qvm over the past decade plus if we have a lot of different resources for this through our magazine through the posters we sell even our little booklet trifle that we use to try to gain members that has that aging on the hook one two three age classes in it we also sell books and small learning educational material like observing and evaluating whitetails hardcover and softcover book and even that little pocket guide and we have stuff on the website that you can use to learn and use to promote this technique obviously it's not an exact science but we all like to learn the page here before we harvest them because we're trying to accelerate them into the oldest age class that you most wish to take so let's review the age classes first and the bulk of this talk we get right into the test part so yearlings slim torso thin neck long slender legs they basically look like a doe with antlers antlers are usually looking at them straight on there or than their ear with two-year-olds torso long and gangly they have long slender legs slim neck and shoulders small tarsal area Everest can be as wide as their ears if you're looking at them straight on they kind of look like they're heavy on the front and a little bit light on the on the hindquarters three and a half talked back and stomach ever goes wide or wider than the ear straight on fuller neck deeper chest chest would be larger than the rump slightly larger parcel areas four and a half a teen skeletal maturity at this point antlers could be again wider legs are now proportionate with the body because they're filling out muscle neck chest increased are sustained and then we have five plus and for the essence of this presentation if you see a deer that's five five or older that's what you're going to be choosing on this screening is 5 and the same thing these guys have just a five and a half year old sheet that they'll be handing up and then this for the sake of Education eight and a half of post prime swayback sagging belly point shoulder and hip they might have smaller antlers things that have declined an overall weathered look so those are all the different categories it's quick show of hands how many folks enjoy to age this portion of the magazine how many people are trying now that we have the new layout with the little blank spots to try to guess what they are before you turn the page raise your hand I truly enjoyed it that's a fun part of it and as we know you know looking up here you can do this with deer again it is it not an exact science you can almost do it with people too and that's kind of the same idea you can look at someone and peg it up in a block of age classes with deer you'll get it to the exact age it's difficult I mean I'm not going to say impossible but you can always be wrong but you have much higher success if you're going to group them in young or you know one or two year-olds middle age three or four or even older five plus and that can be a little bit easier if people are asking you in the field how well do you think this deer is you could say I think it's this age but you probably be a little bit better off saying well I think it's a mature beer on middle aged or young deer you're just like you're looking up on the stage here now if you're looking at job sure you're trying to categorize him in that young middle mature post prime he's half time now so he said it not me and I'll give a plug for Lindsay in the crowd here we're always looking for good content for the website in the magazine tack trail cameras down you're capturing good images send them in we can use them we can use them in the magazine and we can use them in the weekly newsletter that qma puts out - which now has an edge this section so that let's jump right into the first year all right I'll show each one still photo or one slide and then we'll go into the globe - that gives everybody a second or two to think about it all right this is your first deer early fall from New York State your buddies get an agent in mind and you've got five seconds go ahead and vote don't hold up your things yet polls are closed all right panel raise your card what do you think I can't see them go one one two two on this side I've got North and South here so we're trying to figure out where we are very close and about 90% of audience said one it's actually my trail camera photo that's a yearling pretty sure on all right move it too everybody think about Wisconsin get on the run everybody getting an idea all right got five seconds everybody get your votes in the crown bowls are closed okay panel you got one two three all at the same time how old do you think - two - and two across the board about two-thirds of the audience agree with that guys like this pretty quiet out there all right Georgia January 5th in Georgia get an idea in your mind still probably the rut depending on where your are in
