hey everybody syntax 77 here and today I want to talk a little bit about how I use a GPS to plan for my backpacking trips when I'm out backpacking and camping me personally I'm using a Garmin Oregon 650 device right here but fret not if you're not using this actual device or if you're using a cell phone app which is pretty popular nowadays everything I'm about to show you the tools the free tools and the tactics and strategies all of that will work for you on your device as long as just one caveat as long as your device or app is capable of importing GPS data files which is a pretty basic function I'd say if your device or app doesn't do that maybe look into getting one but most likely yours can do that so we're going to go over that today I'm going to show you how to pre plan for a trip create some routes and waypoints and map things out as well as use your device in the field to record data and then when you're at home how you can kind of polish up that data and save it to share what friends or use it again when you go back to that area so you already kind of have a jump start on routes and camp locations and stuff like that that you may want to revisit we've got my laptop here so I'll be switching back and forth on the screens to show you that and first things first we want to jump into here and then we'll load up a web browser and the first thing we want to do is get you running with some software for mapping route planning etc and then this is also what we're going to use to export our GPS data later so you can import it into your device so we're going to use Garmin's Basecamp that is a free software by Garmin and don't worry if you don't have a Garmin device it'll work just fine for you as well you can use it it's totally free you'll see here it's version 4.7 if you are not using a Garmin GPS or you're using a cell phone app you're good to go with this version here however if you are using an actual Garmin device I strongly advise you don't use the current version you go and use the previous version I'll put the details in the video just so we don't get bogged down with that but basically the short and sweet of it is there's a bug with the latest version four point seven and you can import maps onto the software and do all your planning but if you want to transfer those map images to your Garmin device it doesn't work so I will put a link in the video description and you can go to the archives and download version four six two again...
