If your website is served by the IIS web server on Windows, you can generate the certificate signing request (CSR) code right in the IIS console. For this, click on the “Start” button and search for IIS. After opening the IIS console, double-click on “Server Certificates.” Here, click “Create Certificate Request…” at the “Actions” panel. Now you need to enter the details related to your domain. In the “Common Name” field, you should put the exact domain or subdomain the SSL should be assigned to. If you have a wildcard SSL, the common name must have the asterisk. The asterisk defines the subdomain level the SSL will be applicable to. “Organization” is for the name of your organization or company. If you have none, just put “NA” there. The “Organization Unit” field specifies your company’s department. You can also put “NA” there if not applicable. Next field is “City/locality” – it is for, well, city. “State/province” is for your city’s region or county. The last field is for the two-letter code of the country. Now hit “Next” to proceed. On the next page, keep the “Cryptographic service provider” default. As for the bit length – select either 2048 or 4096. Such length is the modern industry standard. Your SSL vendor won’t accept the CSR if the key length is lower than 2048 bit. Press “Next” again. Then, click the browse button and go to the directory where you want to save the CSR code. Enter the file name and press “Open.” Now we are ready to press “Finish.” The CSR code file has been generated in the specified directory. To proceed further with SSL activation, send this file to your SSL vendor. Also, as you might know, the CSR is always generated along with the Private Key. Unlike on GNU/Linux-based servers where you get both the CSR and Private Key files, the key on Windows is stored at the system’s backend. You shouldn’t bother about this if you intend to install the SSL at the same server, but if you are going to install it elsewhere, you will have to export the key in a certain way.
