in this video we're going to talk about doing employee surveys should you do one if so how do you prepare how do you follow up that's coming up right now [Music] hi there i'm andrea adams the host of hr shop talk on the show you get expert insight into all kinds of things that have to do with hr i encourage you to subscribe to the show or podcast to keep searching for my guest today my guest is adam zuckerman adam is a leader in employee experience and engagement if you don't follow him on linkedin you probably should because he's pretty plain spoken and straightforward about a whole bunch of hr things and i've appreciated his post hi adam how are you good how are you i'm great i'm looking forward to this some of this is gonna i you know what so many of these address my pet questions but i have some pet questions i'm gonna ask here so let us not waste any time you are an expert in experience uh uh employee experience and engagement so we have employee satisfaction we have employee engagement and more recently we've added employee experience can you talk about the difference between those three versions of the employee experience i guess yeah sure so there's sort of been an evolution in the field um when we people like me started doing this kind of work we called it employee satisfaction and that was essentially the opinion that the employee had about the organization or or their job when it was called job satisfaction uh just an overall you know positive or negative view about the organization and that um proved to be a useful construct for a time sort of helped to organize their thinking but it it did not reliably predict business performance so that evolved and sort of skipped the step there was something we used to call employee commitment and that was sort of the next step and that that was a reasonable predictor of turnover but it still did not predict um performance in retrospect you could understand why i mean employees could be very satisfied and indeed committed but you know not particularly hard working uh and so we so we didn't see a real clear connection and then in the 90s the field sort of migrated and evolved to to employee engagement and that was defined differently by different firms but essentially the attachment that an individual has to the organization and the willingness to put in a lot of effort to help it succeed and employee engagement as a contract although is defined differently it measured in in somewhat different ways in general there was a lot of evidence that that employee engagement reliably predicts business performance and that's really when the sort of the field took off um in the 90s and i think surveying and interest in these topics became um really much greater um and then...
