well good morning good morning thank you yes well i've been out here about six times i suppose i should introduce myself my name is doug nick and i am the communications director for the department of corrections i've been on staff for about three months now and it's been a real pleasure for me to be here uh i'd like to welcome you to the 2013 department of corrections employee awards recognition ceremony thank you all for being here if you could please rise if you're wearing a hat or a cap please remove it and we are going to honor america with the presentation of the colors and the singing of the national anthem please stay standing throughout right peace ready um oh say can you see by the dance early light what so proudly we held at the twilight's last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight oh the ramparts we watched were so gallantly gay proof through the night that our flag was still there oh say does that star spangled and oh forward much you may applaud and let's give you may be seated let's give another round of applause to lieutenant katina murphy for an outstanding rendition of our national now i'd like to welcome back to the stage the man who leads this agency with great dignity class and professionalism our director charles ryan well good morning i certainly hope you enjoyed the clip that you just watched all the credit for the development of that goes to scott anderson who i consider one of the best videographers in all of state government i think he did a fantastic job 2013 has been an incredible and challenging year for the arizona department of corrections a year ago we had forty thousand inmates today we're right at forty one thousand for those of you that are mathematically challenged that's a growth of one thousand we have ten thousand employees and over the last year and eighteen months we have eliminated all of the bad if you will unsuitable temporary beds today we operate with just under fifty three hundred i asked the division directors tell me what you believe to be the five outstanding things in your areas of responsibility the department is moving forward with out of sell time for maximum security inmates within reason we are revamping the protective segregation policy and its process we are removing all wooden furniture from throughout the prison system and replacing it with metal the inpatient component beds are being installed throughout the department and we are looking at implementing an interstate compact disbursement program of 150 predatory inmates throughout our system we were able to close excuse me we were able to finally purchase the miranda private prison this year so we actually own that that's the first private prison that we've owned after 20 years we have upgraded to phone systems winslow and in phoenix we closed and took back...
