Well friends, I hear that there are many folks around this part of the internet who love watching period dramas, and who may be seeking to learn a bit more about these historical periods within a more educational context. None of this is a value judgment on the piece of media itself, some of these are absolutely fantastic films and shows, some of my absolute faves we are about to obliterate today in terms of the costumes. This is also in no way a reflection on the costume designers, the costume artisans themselves, because there are infinite factors that go into the achievement of historical believability, from budgetary constraints, to time constraints, to directors, and producers, and actors who have very specific artistic visions that might differ from the ability to represent a historical period in any form of realism. At the top, the peak, the pinnacle of the ranking list, we have Tis Peak, My Lord. This film or show has very carefully consulted the research that is available to us today, and they have managed to put together a very believable hypothesis of what these periods would've looked like in actual history. One step down from that is It Gets the Job Done. There might be a couple of leaps from history, but for the most part, you can tell that they're consulting evidence, it still presents a believable depiction of what this historical period would've looked like without any glaring historical anachronisms. Tier number three is a little bit of an outlier, because it doesn't really belong in the hierarchy, and that is It Was a Design Choice. We don't want to have to necessarily dock points for films that are deliberately trying to be artistic, and are trying to make modern commentary, so this is sort of a standalone category that is just in the middle here. You can clearly tell that they have looked at the history and taken great inspiration respectfully from the historical evidence. We can't quite rank it in believable representations of actual history, because that is not what they are necessarily going for. Tier number four is You Tried Affectionately. So despite claiming to depict a specific time, or place, or person in history, the clothing largely fails to contribute to this world building.
