[Music] i welcome you all to pinelands high school my name is mr dave campbell and i'm the principal we welcome families from grade 8 through to grade 11. our grade 8 class consists of approximately 200 young people who come from more than 30 primary schools we also have 11 new students from grade 9 through to grade 11. i know that for them for you starting a new school is not easy but i trust that our friendly and accommodating ways at finance high school will make you feel at home very soon i am aware that we are addressing mainly grade eights in this presentation but i hope and trust that in fact this will be useful to all of our new families various members of our school community are part of this video and we'll be addressing you these include deputies great heads counselors and others they will introduce themselves in turn firstly we are delighted that you made the decision to choose pinellas high school we hope that you made this decision decision as a result of the fine reputation which we have as an educational institution an institution which produces young people who go out and make a difference in the world yes you are starting your new school in a strange time for our grade 8 class you will have only had a portion of your grade 7 year as a normal experience and now you're wondering whether you'll have a full grade 8 experience unfortunately this is not something that we can predict at the moment we know that covert regulations apply which means that you won't be at school every day and it's unlikely that extra murals will happen as per normal but having said that we are nevertheless committed to making your first experiences of high school memorable and happy we want you to feel part of our school community quickly to get to know your peers and your teachers we want you to be saying very soon this is my school and i love it parents our primary aim is to provide your children with a sound academic grounding but this is supported by so much more a safety net in the pastural care area consisting of tutors great heads counselors and more despite there being 980 students in our school it's our fervent belief that each one of them should be known and loved as individuals this is where our tutor system our grade head system our counseling system come into play the grade is broken down into smaller manageable groups and in this way we can hopefully come to know and to love your child each student at phs should be given a more than fair chance to be successful success at school comes from involvement and from support and encouragement it comes from being pushed and extended what more do parents want than to have their children engaged involved stretched and happy and ultimately successful to have their children encouraged to think creatively and to think deeply underpinning all of this is a disciplined environment we believe that ideally discipline should come from within and that that is our ultimate aim to help to instill this however there need to be boundaries in place and consequences for stepping over these boundaries discipline starts with the little things like manners greeting all adults all adults on the campus and calling them sir or man discipline starts with wearing your uniform correctly and with pride discipline starts with treating others with respect our task is to teach young people to co-exist peacefully in an organization or a community to learn to express themselves in a way which is challenging and respectful we believe that our school should be a model of diversity in all of its forms a place where there is freedom to express yourself with inappropriate boundaries a place where difference is celebrated so what about the move from primary to high school it's a time for parents and guardians to start letting go a piece of advice i normally give to moms and dads is stay in the car at the moment with cobit restrictions you don't have a choice unfortunately but seriously it's a time to begin to start to let go your high school student needs to take more and more responsibility during the course of this year in grade 8 and as the years evolve young people from you we expect that you embrace this high school experience be positive be involved work hard throw yourself into pinellas high school the more you give the more you will receive this is your school it's your future you will find here that relationships really matter work on your relationships with your peers with your teachers with those older than you this will make all of the difference it's important to remember to treat everyone with respect whether they are your peers your teachers people who clean the school visitors everyone we believe that this must come first we also do not believe in any form of initiation at finance high school it is simply not accepted we expect older students to treat you with respect and you in turn to treat them with respect young people and parents and guardians i wish you all of the best as you embark on this exciting journey we look forward to walking alongside you and i look forward to meeting you all of you at some stage best wishes most meaningful way the transition to high school is quite a big leap in terms of academics now academic progress cannot be separated from all the other challenges that make high school so challenging and exciting it is undoubtedly a time of great change one of the greatest changes in terms of schooling life but also a time that heralds growth and increased resilience to navigate a different stage in life within the context of the pandemic the environment has become even more challenging and as a school we are acutely aware of how difficult this transition to high school may be for our new grade eights the 2021 grade eights will start high school under covert 19 protocol regulations but grade eights you may have an advantage that you don't know about you had one year experience you survived grade seven and so well done academically we will ease into our program for the year assess areas where remediation is needed and do our best to assist those students who need additional support parents if i may directly address you we cannot succeed without the strong support of our parent community and i would like to encourage you to continue to support your child and to keep an eye on your child's progress continue to closely monitor your child's levels of emotional comfort encourage them to eat well get enough sleep and read as much as they can we have a wonderful school library and digital books can be accessed i will send the information with the weekly distance learning schedule on friday grade 8 this is for you we know that you are nervous about starting high school particularly under the current circumstances but we understand that and we will do everything that we can to make this transition as easy as possible for you be kind to yourself at all times accept that the work may be more challenging than at primary school that you will that you will have up to seven different class teachers and that your bag will be heavier and that you will be more tired we hope and pray that our sporting program will resume as soon as we are able to do so read through your work every day do your homework read your novel and of course watch your favorite show but be patient be positive and willing to learn please also let your subject teachers know if you are struggling this you can do via email or even a note saying that i don't understand the work may i make an appointment to see you we cannot assist if we do not know that help is required we look forward to having you at school and we look forward to getting to know you good day everybody my name is mr preevo and i'm one of the deputy principals at pinellas high school amongst my other duties i take care of the the maintenance of the grounds and buildings and the security at the school i also families and students watching this orientation video are in grade eight only the grade eight grade heads are going to be speaking grade nines to elevens you will meet your grade heads into course joining a new school at any time can be an opportunity to reinvent yourself or to become more authentically who you already are it's a fresh start a new beginning students you can choose to reveal who you truly are or you can shrink back into the shadows and become lace of who you really are the pilot's high we encourage you to be as authentic as possible to be as honest as possible to have as much integrity as possible this means that we're encouraging you to step out into the light to become as engaged as you can be with those who are around you we can only truly know who you are if you grasp that opportunity with both hands if you choose to show us who you truly are and what you are truly capable of then we will truly know you whoever you are there is a place for you at the school there is a niche for you there is a particular area group of friends society whatever that is just for you here at pinelands high you will belong and you do belong mrs smith one of the other great eighth grade heads will speak to you a little bit more about diversity in a moment i want to tell you that we offered you the opportunity to be part of pinelands high because we believe that you have something to offer us even if you feel that you're just ordinary average remember that we saw something in you which was why you are sitting here today watching this video so i do encourage you step out take the risk become who you truly and authentically are fulfill your true potential i know that under the current circumstances it's going to be difficult grade eights you're only going to meet half your grade because you're going to be here on alternate days i think that presents you with a unique opportunity though to make deeper connections to establish deeper friendships and i encourage you to be proactive about stepping out of your comfort zone and making friends grade 9's to 11s it can be difficult for you because you're coming to a school where there are already existing friendships in existing groups but don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone be the first one to make the move don't wait for others to come to you graduates there are just over 200 of you in the grade there may be many people that you know we have done our best to split you up to give you exposure to students from other backgrounds please don't interact with people that you already know rather reach out to those that you don't know i know that meeting new people can make us feel vulnerable but vulnerability can also translate into authenticity which in turn translates to deeper connections and stronger friendships so be willing to be vulnerable be willing to let your walls down and let others in don't stick to what you know or who you know because it's safe and comfortable rather reach out to everybody around you because in so doing you might learn something new you create a bigger circle you create a happier circle for yourself and you create a healthier environment for everybody at the school my father was a great networker as a child and a young adult didn't matter where we went or what we were doing dad always knew someone if we ever had issues if we ever had problems if we ever needed anything dad always knew a guy that he could call he might be able to do us a deal one of my father's favorite maxims was it doesn't matter what you know it's who you know new students i want to encourage you that your tutors and your great heads we are your guy we are the people that you really get need to get to know as grade heads our role is focused primarily on oversight of the grade but we do want to know you as individuals if we know you we can help you we don't get as many opportunities as we might like though because we're grade heads to get to know you and so we would love nothing more than for you to reach out first to come and pop into our classrooms or our offices and say hi so gradates i'm inviting you now to take the initiative to stop by my office and my office is between the english corridor and the main girls toilets stop by and introduce yourself if my door's open you are more than welcome to pop in bring a friend let's chat what are now more than ever we all need the connections that make us truly human that anchor us in the storm that allow us to laugh together and cry together to be authentic and vulnerable and deep i'm excited about what the next five years holds for you and for the school and for your grade i wish you all the best for these next few weeks as you settle in and i look forward to meeting many of you in person and in getting to know you this is going to be an exciting journey and i'm thrilled that i'm able to share it with you dear students welcome to the pinelands life family and a special welcome to the parents as well i'm mr ruger i'm one of the great eighth graders for the year and for those who don't know me a little bit about myself i'm a dad a very proud one to a five-year-old boy i'm an enthusiast when it comes to mountain biking i love the outdoors and during the day you will find me in the engineering graphics and design department where i live my passion through teaching as we enter a new year we enter a time of new opportunity to create our own success it is often said that success occurs when preparation meets that opportunity now opportunities will undoubtedly present itself this year in all shapes and all sizes but my question to you are how are you treating yourself through all the time spent in preparation of accomplishing your goals in the meantime are you giving yourself credit for the work and energy that it takes to become a more successful individual a major aspect of the success equation has to do with being good to yourself treating yourself with kindness and encouragement along your life journey it is important to celebrate all victories big and small on the journey toward fulfilling your dreams it all begins with recognizing you are a successful individual right now and your success can only go up from here students simply having the determination to pursue your happiness your goals and your dreams is a massive success in itself it takes an incredible amount of courage to wake up every morning and keep moving and keep motivating and keep working towards the life that you've always dreamed about having the preparation part of success equation your journey should be celebrated for success is not simply a destination success is not simply something that we arrive at one day success has everything to do with your individual day-to-day choices actions experiences and no matter how big or small they are success has to do with being true to who you are how you choose to respond to every circumstance that occurs in your life success is a journey not a destination so aim to shift your focus from thinking of success as something that's always out of your reach or something that involves constantly wanting or needing more keeping up with someone else and focus instead on being grateful for who you are and what you have right now and there's so much to be grateful for isn't there whatever it is you might be going through regardless of how challenging it may be there's always much to be thankful for be grateful for who you are and fully appreciate your individuality and all that you have in your life now do the very best that you can with what you have now while at the same time striving towards becoming an even better version of yourself a better version of yourself than what you were yesterday have faith and always believe that you will achieve anything you set out to do you are a miracle there is no one else out there like you start to view yourself and your world today as being miraculous and trust that you will create anything you set out to do i would like to leave you with uh inspirational words from a well-known and very talented writer while my five-year-old son definitely seems to enjoy his work so in the words of dr seuss today you are you that is truer than true there is no one alive like you so students i leave it to you to decide how will you define success in 2021 remember success follows happiness not the other way around i'm looking forward to enjoying this journey with you it's all the best for 2021 and i'm looking forward to meeting you bye for now good day parents guardians and our grade 8 of 2021 i am melissa smith one of your three great heads and full-time english teacher at pinens high school we celebrate diversity in all of its different forms and we express that in the different societies that we have here at school we have a choir which sings songs in many different languages both from south africa and from other parts of the world we have an lgbtq plus society called kaleidoscope which provides a safe space for people of different gender identities and sexual orientations our academic counselor mrs adrian provides support for students with learning barriers and special education needs we have wheelchair ramps throughout the school to make our grounds accessible to those with disabilities every year you will see our school community protesting gender-based violence on forest drive when you get to grade 11 some of you will attend rainbow camp where you will explore diversity and equality and social justice more recently we have the transformation committee which seeks to dismantle systemic racism through meaningful engagement with students staff and management finally you can expect to grapple regularly with the social justice themes in the classroom looking at all of these examples great eights it should be clear to you that our school community will not tolerate disrespect shown to people on the basis of their race gender faith sexual orientation or ability bullying will be met with serious disciplinary action we understand that becoming an accepting and empathetic individual is a journey and that we are all in different places if you feel at any stage that some differences upset you or make you feel uncomfortable i encourage you to make an appointment with your tutor great head or mrs owen barnard our counselor so that we can support you and help you work through your feelings starting high school is your first step of many towards becoming an independent adult very soon you will start seeing the world differently to the way your parents see it by learning to think for yourself and form your own opinions about people through your experiences with them i am honored to walk this path with you i hope that in five years time i will look at you all hopefully in person this time and see a close-knit group of diverse student activists united and they care for and respect of one another let's make that happen thank you welcome to all the new students and our grade 8 class of 2021 our sport managers coaches and i cannot wait to get our sport years started we hope that over the next five years you develop a love for sport and build strong friendships with your teammates that will last a lifetime and that you continue to play sport long after you leave pinens high school before we get there covert has slowed us down a bit and the way forward will not be what we are used to for now you will need to think about what sport you would like to sign up for in the next few days you will receive the pinens high school sports sign up form this will be sent in an email to your pinens high school email address please ask your parents to help you complete the form you may also choose more than one sport for summer or winter as long as you indicate which sport is your first choice and which sport is your second choice when sport does start again and you realize that the times are clashing or if you encounter any other issues you may request to change sports everyone must choose at least one summer sport and one winter sport for administrative reasons please sign up as the cover does not exist this is important because it will give us an idea of where we need to allocate coaching resources for this year and for the future now let's talk about sport during covert and what we can expect when you return to school when you return to school you can expect to start with sports sessions from monday the 22nd of february unless we are notified otherwise you will have sport on the days that you come to school sport and exercise is especially important during a pandemic to manage your mental health it will also keep you fit and healthy to attend these sessions you will need permission from your parents sessions are from monday to thursday and they will start 15 minutes after your last lesson the duration of the session is 60 minutes when you arrive at the session you must wear your mask when we engage in the actual exercise you may choose to keep your mask on or remove your mask everybody will be socially distanced and we will be outside you may not share any water bottles and the regular sanitizing of your hands and equipment will help us keep you and our coaches safe for the grade eights of 2021 we will include an extra training session this will happen on saturday mornings from quarterbacks eight until quarterbacks 10. this is to ensure that all grade aides have the basics and the fundamentals in place to play their respective sports without injury at this point all trading sessions are non-contact this means that when you attend a hockey soccer water polo or basketball session you may not engage in tackling at all as soon as we are given the permission to compete again we will reintroduce tackling into our training sessions while you are waiting for sport to start i strongly encourage that you stay fit go for regular runs to exercise in the safety of your home and ensure that you are stretching every day that's all for now and i hope to see you guys very soon as the academic and the sports program at pinelands high school are of vital importance the cultural department is the spirit and the soul of the school it is the essence of our existence and what makes us human i'm mrs chandi the director of music and the head of culture when walking through our school you would normally hear the alive creative sounds and energy from the students transcend but due to covert restrictions the bright flame of the council department was dimmed but not put out as we continue to march forward at pinelands high school we encourage a holistic approach to education we offer three art forms art drama and music our art program will unlock your child's visual world to think openly and to have confidence in their own opinions on life and the world around them by the end of their high school career each student develops a greater understanding of self a greater knowledge of their responsibilities and to find their own artistic voice drama encourages creative thinking and self-confidence the focus this year will be on connecting with one another later this year our aim is to present an online drama production the common goal is to build relationships and to provide a safe and responsible space while so enjoying camaraderie through drama music requires consistent discipline to work independently and work towards an end goal learning to play a musical instrument offers a lot of benefits i believe that if there's one thing you should learn in your lifetime it's how to play an instrument due to covert restrictions our practical lessons are now a blended model with online and face-to-face practical lessons last year we had our first end-of-year online music concert we look forward to our first online gala concert later this year we have a rich history of clubs and societies in pursuit of our aim to enrich and extend your child to the highest level we have active cultural clubs and societies allowing students to become involved in their field of interest the cultural program will allow your child to be innovative be a leader and achieve excellence some cultural activities will be presented online or after school in accordance with covert protocols the overall purpose of these clubs and societies is to help develop optimally rounded individuals we offer an eco club society choir poverty express wind band which is by invitation only and has an audition process we have an interact robotics but just to name a few i'm looking forward to meeting and welcoming your child to our cultural department good morning everyone welcome to pinelands high school for those of you whom i haven't yet met i'm michelle owen barnard the school psychologist or counselor and i work full time at pinelands high we're also in a fortunate position to have a male psychologist mr jp senecal who assists us as needed for additional support for our students i'd like to chat you for a moment about our role which is essentially to address the psychological and social concerns of our students by providing therapeutic support to them concerns that arise for many of our young people are usually around a variety of topics including fitting into the school system building relationships with peers managing difficult home circumstances working out their identity and their sexuality managing anxiety depression or other mental health conditions it's also tough to navigate romantic relationships substance use peer pressure and other things that adolescence brings of course adolescence is a tough time for a lot of students as they face these difficult challenges it's also an exciting time of course the current pandemic as an increased burden psychologically and socially for our students as they juggle new forms of learning fears around their health and safety and there's a loss of many enjoyable stress release outlets such as their sport and their social events and so all of this does add challenges for them counselling is available at school and your child is very welcome to come for a chat when they are facing a personal challenge how do they do this simply email me directly students will have access to all of the staff's email addresses or they can pop in at the counseling office in person to set up an appointment time they can also go through their tutor teacher or their grade head to arrange an appointment should they feel more comfortable with that approach and as parents you're also welcome to call or email to set up an appointment for your child if you are concerned about them or if they are uncomfortable making first contact themselves while i would love to meet all of you in person it's often very difficult to find enough time in the school day to meet face-to-face with parents especially now during the pandemic if it is something which we could discuss telephonically or via email we generally prefer to use that route first of course with emergency or complex situations we absolutely will prioritize meeting with you in person as we would also hope and expect that you would meet with us if there was a critical concern which arose during the school day so while we don't offer ongoing in-depth therapy at school due to time constraints and the large number of students at our school we will make a referral for your child to continue counseling through an external organization always taking financial situations into account of course if we feel that therapy is is indicated a little bit more long term sometimes we find that parents can be resistant to taking their child for counselling or to a medical doctor for mental health reasons and we really appeal to you to work with us in the best interests of your child as we've seen just how much better a student copes when both their home and their school understand their mental health needs so adolescence is the time when your child usually needs you the most but will communicate this the least and you may find that your son or your daughter will more readily open up to peers or social media or to certain teachers at school perhaps a peer helper and it can be tough to find a balance between being a sensitive and caring parent and maintaining clear consistent rules and expectations for your home may i encourage you to have discussions with your children about the reasons for your home rules and expectations whilst also being sensitive and caring and open to their journey and their perspectives as young people creating a structured yet supportive home base a place for them to feel safe enough with you safe enough to be able to raise difficult topics or to perhaps disclose that they've been attending counselling at school really goes a long way if you have any questions you're most welcome to make contact with me we also have a peer helper mentorship program for our grade eights group of selected and trained metric students are partnered with each of the grade a tutor classes and the peer helpers are there to welcome to assist the grades in settling into high school and becoming more involved in the life of the school they're there to answer questions to build supportive relationships they will also engage with students on various themes promote discussions and provide guidance across a number of topics which are relevant to the school year and to the current world climate as well so the peer helpers are excited to meet their mentees their grade 8 classes and to welcome them into the pinelands high family another important aspect that i'd like to briefly mention is your child's medical information by now you would have or soon will receive an email from mrs hendricka mehring with instructions for accessing the parent portal on this portal you'll be able to add and receive important information please ensure that you locate the medical details page and fill in any significant information relating to your child's health as well as contact details for emergencies and the contact details of medical practitioners so by law we are not permitted to distribute medicine to students if your child is required to take daily medication it will need to be done under the supervision of yourselves at home or entrusted to the child to take by themselves at school unfortunately we cannot store this on their behalf or administer it to them in the case of life-threatening allergies or conditions we request that students carry any emergency medication they may need on a person at all times in a zip pocket on in their blazers or in their bags this would include things such as an epi pen or an insulin pen or an asthma pump should any new significant mental health or physical health information come to light over the course of the grade 8 year or later on in high school please do inform your child's tutor immediately and update this information on the medical page of the parent portal that's all from me i look forward to meeting your child and to welcoming them to pinelands high dear parents of our new graduates and other learners the start of a new school often marks the start of a new adventure in your child's life in these very different times it is definitely going to be an adventure with a twist hi mrs adrian the academic counselor trust as mrs owen barnard our school counselor is here to support your child in an emotional capacity my role deals with the academic focus in which academic support is often offered this may include anything from academic counseling careers counseling assistance with more effective study methods subject choice decisions as well as academic concessions when a child is experiencing a barrier to learning please be aware that we cannot work in isolation parents need to be vigilant and communicate to us when a child may be experiencing low morale or any academic hiccups we as counselors do not teach all of these learners and do not know most of them we therefore depend on you as the parents as well as recommendations from teachers so we can effectively provide the appropriate support at the time that it is needed as your children move through high school please encourage them to speak up about any problems they are experiencing many learners start to experience problems as they move to the higher grades and as the workload becomes much heavier yet they do not call out for help this is not unusual for a large percentage of our learners it may simply mean tweaking this study approach or just a little bit of guidance for the time management feel free to attract to me at any time whether it is a small concern like a bit of help with the study time table or chat about where they are lacking in these study methods it is important to do something about it as soon as possible in order to achieve the best that they can as they transition through their senior years at school so i'd like to picture this high school journey as an experience with all of us as being in a boat together not the luxury cruise line a type of boat but rather the one river rafting down the orange river with rapids rocks and rough water along the way some students may fall out they may have to swim to get back into the boat they will need strong arms to pull themselves back up into the boat but then they have us the teachers and the parents to support them and to help pull them back into the boat let us work together to make this high school
