[Music] [Music] well shalom welcome to another edition of word pictures in ancient hebrew several years ago when i first discovered ancient or paleo hebrew and began to look at the hebrew language through pictographs and and through the meanings that they carried to the language i really just was mesmerized one of the first words that i discovered in in that journey was the word peace or shalom in the hebrew and of course the definition that we've used ever since then thanks to dr frank sekins is destroy the authority that establishes the chaos now as you think about peace i think that's a i think that's a perfect explanation of what happens when we get peace from a spiritual perspective and i don't believe that's changed but as i began here lately studying the book of genesis fresh i went back once again i thought i want to go back right to the very beginning and see what i can discover new in the book of genesis and as i did i went with with a new perspective in mind i didn't ask the question who what when where or how created or brought about the creation i ask a new question that i frankly have never really looked at very closely before and that is why did god create the heavens and the earth why did god create and as i began to do that i made some just just fantastic discoveries in my own personal study and i wanted to share the idea of this this this concept of peace from that perspective uh when you go to the beginning of the book of genesis the first word you run into is bearish sheet and we can see it's a it's a word that is actually brought about by adding a bet to the word resheet and it turns out to be the first word of the whole bible now many of the ancient sages and rabbis have often asked the question why is it that god who is the aleph god who is the the great one uh started his letter to mankind with a bet with the second letter of the alphabet that seems a little curious to them and as i begin to look into this question of why did god create the heavens and the earth i believe at least at least for my satisfaction holy spirit has certainly given me an answer to that question and it starts with that letter bet you see the letter bet in the hebrew language in its ancient format it's paleo format is the picture of a tent in other words it talks about the home or the tent or the house and i believe that's exactly where god started the second letter as you can see is the word resh that's the letter resh and it's drawn as the head of a man and therefore it speaks of the idea of man so here in the very first word of the bible the very first two letters we don't have an aleph saying god but we have god's intent we have god's reason for doing it what he's about to do and that reason involves a house and it involves a man well as you read the rest of the story you find out that's exactly what god does in genesis chapter 1 it tells us how he creates the heavens and the earth how he puts everything into place and in the first three days how he builds the framework of his creation in the second three days how he furnishes and adorns that until you come to day six and his final act is to create mankind so god does indeed build a house now it's something new we don't think it's ever existed before at least god hasn't told us that but this idea of a physical realm that god can relate to and so god has built a house and he's put a man in it let's go back to the word bear sheet one more time and we're going to discover as we look at the last letter that our question finds its fullness right here with the letter taw which was two cross sticks it designated in that particular ancient cultural setting the idea of a mark or an agreement or a covenant well now we've got something to work with god has created a house that he can put mankind in so that he can have covenant with us i think to me that's just a marvelous understanding of why god created the heavens and the earth now it also gives us an interesting insight into the rest of the story of the bible because we don't have to go but another chapter until we find out that god has created this man put him in this house and he's made a covenant with him and he said listen i want you to be fruitful and multiply and i want you to take dominion over this entire creation everything that i have put here is yours except only only one rule i don't want you to eat from that one particular tree the tree of the knowledge of good and evil now if you and i you and i would think well that is man that's an awesome deal that's a no-brainer god's given not given me any rules there are no rules i can do anything i want i can go anywhere i want within his creation i can have anything i want within his creation except for that one thing i think i can handle that well we read the story one more chapter and we discover no no it's not going to work because we find there that the tempter comes in temps eve she shares the forbidden fruit with adam and now the one rule the one thing that god has forbidden they have engaged in now what did god tell them would happen if they did that he told them in chapter 2 of genesis if you eat from that tree you will die you will surely die as we look at the story and we continue to read it we discover something interesting happens and that is that adam lives at least another 900 years he lives he lives to be up into the 9th century and continues to have family have sons and daughters so he doesn't just die when he eats from the tree so what exactly does that word die mean and i believe that's one of the keys to our understanding in this word peace in shalom a dai is the word muth in hebrew and if you look at it in ancient pictographs it's a meme a vav and a taw the mem we know is waves of water and it's generally stands for chaos or mystery in the context that it's used in in so many different ancient hebrew words the vav is the nail the tent peg and it's obviously speaks of adding or establishing something of holding something there and the taw is as we know the covenant that's that's the whole intent that god had here was to have a covenant with us but when we put these words together in the context that they're used god says if you eat from the tree you shall surely mooth and when he says mooth he says if you eat from that tree if you disobey this one thing then i believe it says you're going to attach chaos to the covenant that i've made with you attach chaos to the covenant that's when we begin to die now sure enough it brings about physical death that's the result of that but it wasn't the immediate result the cause is the disobedience and what happens is the covenant relationship that god designed for us that that beautiful relationship of fullness and of love and of openness and of trust and of security and of freedom now has something attached to it that causes that relationship to always be in bondage causes that relationship to always be stressed and to be strained and therefore you and i when we're born into this life we are born in that very condition we start from there and so what happens now as we continue to ask this question well why did god create all of this god created a house to put a man in to have covenant with but now the covenant is fouled the covenant has problems and the covenant brings about a nature in man that causes him to sin another interesting word when we look at that word sin we find out it's the word the first use of that word in the scripture is is where god tells cain that sin lies at his door why because he has murdered his brother abel he's taken his life and so now sin this idea of sin what is sin well the khatta is a hat a tet an aleph and a hay and it says behold what greatly surrounds that het is a fence the tet is a bowl and so the fence speaks of a large enclosure but the bowl tightens it up it's a small enclosure so sin is what greatly surrounds and encloses us and what does it do what's the result of that well we would generally say sin is missing the mark that's exactly what sin does it causes us to miss the mark why because we're constricted by the desires and the wants that we have that are at odds with they bring chaos to the covenant that god has with us but there's an answer to that you see god says well i can fix it i can fix it and in fact part of his original plan i don't think we're in part b i think we're still in part a of god's original plan and that was he's going to fix this and he does that by redeeming us that's the word gael in the hebrew and it's spelled with a gimel an aleph and a lament and we find that in exodus 6 6 where god already is saying i'm going to redeem you here's the way i'm going to fix this problem with mankind so that my original intent the original reason that i created can be fulfilled i can have a house that has mankind in it that i can have covenant with and so god brings about this idea of redemption the word redeemed means exalted by great authority well that's what happens god exalts us by his authority we can't do it ourselves it takes his authority and so he has to come himself in the form of yeshua to do that very thing now to fully understand this idea of redeeming we gotta go to the root word which is goal and goal is spelled with a a gimmel and a llamad and many times there's a second llama added to it and when you add that second llama to this root word it tells us that the idea is to roll something to to pick something up and use authority to get it back where it's supposed to be and so the idea of redemption is that god wants to roll us right back to the original condition that he had us in the original situation that he wanted with us where we can be in perfect communion and perfect relationship with him so now when we've looked at this idea of why god created the heavens and the earth and we discover that he built a house to put a man in to have covenant relationship with the thing that we have to have now because of sin entering the picture and because of one that would bring in sin we have to have a peace that interjects itself a piece that takes the place of all of those things that are attached to our covenant and how does that happen well we have a redeemer and that redeemer is the one who shalom who brings us shalom he destroys the authority that establishes the chaos but i believe it's more than that because we understand this word muth now that death is actually attaching chaos to that covenant i think we can look a little deeper into the word shalom and we can discover that real shalom means to destroy the authority that attaches the chaos to our covenant well that's exactly what yeshua did first john 3 8 tells us that in the new testament it says he who sins is of the devil for the devil has sinned from the beginning so we were right back to the story we were talking about for this purpose so let's find out what jesus came for for this purpose the son of god was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil so that's what he does he shaloms us he steps in and he destroys that authority that tries to attach chaos to the covenant that we've got with god what a marvelous idea of peace isaiah said it just beautifully in chapter 26 verses 3 and 4. he says he's speaking of god he says you will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you if you look at that in hebrew it says god you will keep the one that keeps their mind stayed on you in shalom shalom perfect peace is actually shalom shalom and so it's just a double emphasis there why because he trusts in you foreign the lord is everlasting strength wow what a what a marvelous scripture what a what a marvelous promise we have from god that he'll keep us in perfect shalom shalom if we'll stay focused on him why because that doesn't give this chaos a place to attach to us it it keeps us free of the chaos that the world would try to put upon us john 14 27 yeshua makes this a little more clear i think this is a very interesting verse because it gives us some real insight into this idea of shalom he says this peace shalom i leave with you my shalom i give to you not as the world gives do i give it to you so what he's telling us here is there are more than one kind of peace in the world and so our definition we're looking at is one where there has to be an authority that comes in and destroys another authority that's trying to attach chaos to our covenant jesus says that's the kind of shalom that i have not the worlds well what is the world's peace well we've all been there before we've all tried the world's peace i like to define that as the lowest common denominator of chaos that we all can agree to that's that's what the world calls peace and it never lasts it it never carries out why because that tempter is there and he's continuing to bring in that attachment of chaos to our covenant with god so yeshua goes on to say don't let your heart be troubled and don't let it be afraid if you'll use my shalom if you'll use my peace that i bring then you won't have the chaos in your life and so that's how we judge whether or not we have the shalom of god is whether or not we have chaos in our lives whether it's attached to our covenant relationship with god finally yeshua says this these things i've spoken to you that in me you may have shalom in the world you're going to have tribulation that's the difference between those definitions of peace the one that comes from the world and the one that comes from yeshua but be of good cheer i've overcome the tribulation of the world so what an incredible promise we have from god that we can have his shalom in our lives and that we can know when we have it because we can see the way it works in our covenant relationship with him well i pray that god will keep you in perfect peace and that he'll bless you and that he'll do things in your life that will let you know how much he loves you and how much he wants you to live in perfect peace shalom shalom may god bless you and keep you until next time [Music] you
