good afternoon riders I hope you're having a fantastic day here is a question have you ever wanted to write on medium.com and see what that's all about and how people are making so much money but you're kind of new to it that's what we're gonna talk about today if you like this sort of thing make sure that hits the subscribe button and the alarm bell so you can get updates on when I published fresh content let's get right into it okay so today we're going to look at medium calm and I'll just kind of give you a walkthrough of what medium is all about and a little bit of how people make money on their partnership program I won't go into great detail about it because that's another video but this is for anybody who's new to medium comm and wants to set their profile and know a little bit of the features to help you navigate through it so go to medium comm and you'll see it a page like this different API is to log in I use Google it's the the easiest and once you get there you will see a landing page just like this over time it when you read different articles it'll curate different articles that you may or may not like and it'll show you things based on what you like or what you hide there's a new feature actually on it that just came out today called the mute and so you can mute authors and mute publications which is kind of cool or dismiss stories and so you if you see less and less of something that you don't like so it's this great way it's a free account by the way it's a great way for you to curate or have the curators and editors pick the right stuff for you so I'm gonna show you how to do a free a free account today but you can't pay five dollars a month and get the premium account and you can read as many articles as you want if you have the free version you only get five articles a month okay how do you know what you can and can't read will see where the there's a little stars here that star means it's behind the paywall or they call in gated content or a locked content and so those are the you can read five of those a month and an S it and as you can see there's nothing on on my page on the front page that is unstart which means everything is behind the paywall so they kind of the D hold New York Times Wall Street Journal thing so anyhow once you get there you upload your picture let me show you what this all about you'll scroll down click on the upper right hand corner there'll be a blank thing you can add a picture I'll show you how to do that you'll click profile right there and then and you'll see a profile page you just get hit edit profile now if you're a freelance writer in so who I serve is advanced beginners as opposed to intermediate advanced-intermediate so I don't coach or counsel like far and complete professionals that are making six seven figures a year but I don't address like brand new never written before my life type of people kind of like a little bit in the middle mainly intermediate writers and so I showed those people how to write articles that deliver or that command one thousand three thousand dollars per article and so that's why this profile is important if you've established yourself a little bit we've got a few articles out here and there I would put that in your profile if you have written for HuffPo if you have written for Forbes then I would definitely put that in there because this little byline thing is on every single article and so you want to put out your best stuff is you know but on the forefront and then this link this is a special little link right here it's called link tree see how it spells kind of funny get one of those free accounts as well because when you link out to it basically it allows you to do as many links as you want instead of the one it'll give you you know as many as you want and that way you can address different kinds of things that you offer so that's what I use in my profile and so yeah so upload your pictures make sure it's aphasia so your readers can really get to know who you are okay all right so let's move right along if you wanted to write a story you click here and you click new story okay that's how that starts and in you if you want to see stories from the past old stories you click that one right there you can write a series of stories like that's basically a collection and then here is your statistics I'll show you what that looks like right here if you click stats I'm not do too hot I didn't write a whole lot in metehan last last month at all I've been doing client work but it kind of shows you a breakdown I like the old stats better but it kind of breaks down what your story how well your stories are doing here's one individual story and you know kind of like this is interesting the the what is tagged as your readers interests and this is what I use for my clients right here the traffic sources and so you can tell that this one is mainly since it was curated under mindfulness you can see that most of the traffic is internal eighty-three percent and then very little I like to look at the Google one next very little is found so it's not ranking in Google at all absolutely not ranking Google fried cuz it's you know the gated content but anyhow I have other articles that rank super high in Google and so this number could be like like ninety percent of the traffic and it internally could be like five percent so you know that's kind of helpful as well and what else do we got here we got o bookmarks are kind of cool if you click the bookmark you can read stories and bookmark them okay so this little thing kind of tells you what that's all about you bookmark Emin in if you're tired of seeing them you can archive that pretty basic you can see some things that I've bookmark as well you can see things that I've archived so that sort of thing let's see what else do we have we have oh the we'll talk about partner program later let's go to let's go to creating any story actually so let's say we're creating a story and basically what we're gonna you should always try to publish in a medium publication it is free you just have to have a really great writing you should definitely check out the curation process because just that those rules and that format in general it's basically asking for really great well-written content if you follow the curation rules publications will accept you and they all want and gated content meaning when you go to send it to them they want you to check that little box that says this is going to be gated so when you're ready to publish this say this is a full-blown article there's you know 2,000 words on it you can go to change the title subtitle so you never hit publish that should actually say self publish but the publisher determines how if you're going to be published or not so what you would do is you'd want to go to the let me dial one out for you actually right now okay so let's say that you wanted to submit a story to the startup because because you have a business topic a business article you wrote about so you would go to the startup and in that publication and then right here there's a submit button so it tells you exactly the process what they're looking for and they are sticklers with the guidelines so definitely follow this if you know you want to be in a startup or a publication like it read what they're requiring so you use this guideline along with the curation guideline and try to practice both of them now if you do a form of writing like I do brand journalism there are some things that you can't do that are in the curated list but definitely follow the publication's style guide so you're gonna scroll down and it's gonna give you this job form so this is technically how you submit an article to the startup to be reviewed to possibly get published in it so okay so about if I were writing an article right here it says share draft link is what I'm gonna do I'm gonna copy that let's say this article is done I want to share it with these people okay all right here this is where you slap in your link to your medium story you just wrote okay I asked for your email and I think it's done so that's how you do it and then they say up here if you they haven't heard if you haven't heard from him for three days and they overlooked your they're not gonna publish so you'd have to go to another one but if it's in three days they said yes sometimes they write you back then all you do is you go back to the original story which is right here and then you click these little three dots and you would see add to publication you would see their publication here ah the startup they need to select and continue you won't hit publish it won't give you an option out another window is gonna pop up and it's gonna have a box that checks that it's gated content check that box and all the tags are there and then you submit to them and ultimately the publication publishes so you never hit the word or the the button publish just just remember that and they'll usually publish it within a couple days or so but you want to keep checking because the first day first 24 hours is crucial to get traffic because it just improves the metrics of your overall article and your payment so you want to have a launch plan for your article as well search engine marketing that sort of thing okay so that's how that works let's move on to those other stats let's move on to other things let's see the median partner program so that's kind of interesting what that is okay so April 1 it's funny so the it's April 1 today so everything is like zeroed out and usually what I've noticed is it takes a couple days for the Natalia what today's numbers were so they're all zero but I know that several people read the article but anyhow we'll look at let's see successful article that I had so here are the earnings for this particular story it's only two months old and you know they give you a kind of all the different stats from the views to the earnings for the reading time that's alike a lot of hours it looks like but yeah so it's kind of cool the way they do that but the stats used to be better than this I have to say but this is kind of all you get on your individual story but this is from being part of the partner program and what that means is that you do a contract with medium as a writer it's all free you just got stuff set up a stripe account which I know many countries some countries can't use stripe so they can't be writers for medium but most countries can so this is the medium partner program go to medium stroke craters craters create tours and you will see what I'm talking about they they kind of walk you through what it's all about it's called the medium partner program how it works you write and you're looking at being curated remember and then you submit the publications and so you know they determine they have 30 editors that determine whether you're right writing is newsworthy for mediums audience or not and in it they think it is then you there you go will earn some money if this curated see there's a curation word just curated you will earn money so that's pretty much how it works and you get paid monthly the beauty about it is that you will earn money as long as people read it so the first time this article came out remember it's two months old it was around $1,000 and that was you know wrote it once it took me three hours I was done with it they curated it got put on the main page for mindfulness it stayed there under popular articles for the whole month I think and so it kept getting read over and over and over instead of being curated and lost in the shuffle it there's this top 10 I'll show you what I'm talking about on the far right here popular mindfulness my articles that was there so it was on the front page on this mindfulness column where they have the top five it stayed here for an entire month and that's why I got paid so much money for it I guess people kept reading it and I kept loving it different story this month or month two I'm going on month three now but it's a different story month view I still made seven eight hundred dollars on that article alone just that one article but it's no longer popular in mindfulness so I'm predicting maybe you know the third month a and I make a few hundred and like three four hundred dollars at best from it but imagine if you had several articles that you and you kept writing so they come in they're coming in at different times so you got a stream of steady income coming in if missed curated it's getting harder to get curated meaning picked by the editors but when you do it is fantastic so I like to to do brand journalism right for c-suite executives ghosts right for them on Forbes or entrepreneur calm and I also like to do money do jobs for websites that copywriting I'll write all the copy for websites I'll do sales pages I'll do Facebook as write the copy for that okay I'll do this kind of article for medium where it's not for a brand but just to get curated on a specific topic the topic that I love so these are multiple streams of income coming in right so you never know what's gonna hit and so I like to diversify I would definitely investigate this form the stream of income it's fantastic as legs as I shown you can have extra couple thousand dollars coming in a month so that that is definitely handy so the sign up for this all you need is a stripe account and that's it it doesn't cost any money you set up a free stripe account you set up a free partner account that is different from the member see how it says I'm a member that means I pay to read more than five hour start with five curated articles or articles a month but you don't have to be a part of that too a partnership a member for this writing program where this just medium partner program you don't have to pay anything at all so that's fantastic and if they accept your work you get paid well so that's kind of what you need to know about this of this little 371 yeah that thing annoys me actually so what that is is how many notifications the problem with the notifications is that it doesn't tell you the specifics of it like it could be a comment it could be your create it could be an alert from somebody like it's just this is useless so I think when it takes up to 5,000 I'll give something away I don't I don't know but I just ignore that this little thing is handy you can search all of medium for certain articles so I write about s mm a social media marketing so here's my my big article right here and my other article there and another article there and another article it there here I go this is like I own this s mm a social media marketing agency I own it anyhow so what's kind of cool is if you get into a specific periodical and you use search it'll just look for articles within that publication but if you click the Big M and you're on the main page it doesn't the entirety of medium so that's less kind of slick but anyhow that is medium in a nutshell so hopefully you have enough to go on about how it works what you can do I just want to add like one more section here is that you can highlight anything you want okay just like running the cursor over something you can also if there's a certain phrase that you like highlight it and then tweet it and pre-pre loads it for you you can send somebody a private note the author or private note about passage okay or you can one last one here is make a public comment so this is the public one this is the private one with a lock on it okay and then lastly when you scroll down you can bookmark it you share it on social media of course oh here's something I did to talk about you can clap something press press once and it's like one clap but you can hold it down and clap up to fifty times five zero and then you can undo the applause right here follow people okay you can follow the entire publication if you want and I usually uncheck that cuz I don't want a bunch of emails and then you can give a response you write your comment basically so that's that's that and that's pretty much the basics up here are the medium.com specific they're their own by medium so 1-0 editors run that from medium so it's really hard to get into one zero elemental all these the forge is fantastic same with human parts they're medium own periodicals so there is an interesting article on this one where a guy wrote about getting paid a dollar word he wrote a four thousand dollar worked four thousand dollar article he did a dollar word so it was four thousand words you got paid for $1,000 the forge paid him that so using when you write for the forge i think it's anywhere from one hundred to four hundred dollars depending so they pay their writers but this professional writer got paid for grants so i was like wow this is outstanding and you get paid numerous ways a publication could pay you but most of them do not I'd say like 99% of them do not pay you anything but some of them give you you know 100 bucks or whatever you can also get paid an additional hundred of dollars from medium itself if it happens to be a topic they're into it's like a bonus though they send you an email and saying hey you made this bonus that's super rare as well so there's two ways right there that you can get paid and it thirdly again the partner program you can get paid pretty well sometimes so to summarize in this video we talked about how medium how to set up an account with medium some of the features of medium like the partnership program how to write a story comments feedback statistics how to put things on your reading list by bookmarking them and then we talked about publications and how to submit
