when you're typing a paper where you want all of your paragraphs to be invented the best way to do this is to create an automatic first line indent to do this at the start of your paper after your title hit enter/return and left align your next line now this is when you might manually hit tab and then start typing your paper but instead what you should do is come up to the ruler here and if you can't see the ruler go to view and then check the ruler box when you've done that with your cursor left aligned come up to the ruler in the very top wedge or marker if you hover over it is called the first line indent when I move that marker over half an inch it's automatically going to indent the first line of every paragraph so now if I were to type some text you'll see that the first line is automatically indented and every subsequent line is not if I hit enter/return here notice that because I hit enter/return it knows that I'm going to create a new paragraph so it has again automatically indented that first line now let's say you forgot to do this and you're tired of hitting the indent and you've already got halfway through your paper then what do we do well we can see when we hit the tab key by turning on the invisible or non-printing characters you can tell when you've manually hit the tab key because it shows it with this arrow here so what we can do is we can backspace to delete all of those manual indentations that you've created then highlight all of your paragraphs and only the paragraphs in the paper don't include the title or the heading or header now when I highlighted all of my paragraphs you might have more or less than I do but once I've highlighted all of my paragraphs I can again go up to the ruler and shove that first line indent wedge to half an inch and every first line indent that it finds it will automatically indent half an inch
