Add initial admission
I'm the director of admissions and student support here at Imperial I'm going to be speaking to you about what makes a successful applicant to Imperial some of the information our be giving you will hopefully help you when thinking about whether you wish to apply to Imperial however some of the information is also general and therefore you'll find it useful when thinking about applying to universities Imperial takes its position in rankings very seriously we recognize applicants will look at institution rankings when doing their research on where to apply whilst we're consistently ranked in the top 10 in both UK and global league tables we're always working hard towards improving our position here's information on admissions for 2019 entry however as we're still in the 2019 admission cycle the number of offers made and the number who have accepted Imperial as their firm choice are approximate we normally see an increase in the number of applications we receive year on year and the 2019 admissions cycle is no different we guarantee accommodation to all first-year students therefore it's important that the places we're looking to fill are aligned with the number of bed spaces as Imperial our admission structure is part centralized and part decentralized the centralized admissions section is responsible for the initial assessment of the application for example assessing academic eligibility fee status assessment whether an applicant is home EU or overseas and checking and submitting decisions to UK the decentralized section is our academic departments who are the decision-makers they are responsible for conducting interviews and selection days and they submit decisions to the central admissions team for checking and sending to you Cass you may come across this structure at other institutions or some may be completely centralized or decentralized however this gives you an insight into the structure here at Imperial the the offer ranges we tend to make to applicants applying with a levels and the IB these are the most common qualifications that applicants apply to us with but we do accept a wide range of European and international qualification further details can be found on our web site where we make a triple AAA AAA level offer this equates to 38 points overall in the IB with higher level grades 665 in the preferred subjects an a a star a star offer equates to 42 points overall in the IB with higher level grades 776 in the preferred subjects where we asked for an a-star grade it will normally be in the preferred subjects we also sometimes add a step condition which I'll talk about later the next few slides gives you information regarding some important UK states fifteenth of October 2019 is the deadline for applicants to Oxbridge that's Oxford or Cambridge and applications to medicine and dentistry therefore if you are applying for medicine here at Imperial you need to submit your application by the 15th of October 2019 to all other programs the deadline is 15th of January 2020 your school or college will normally guide you and will ensure that you submit your application by the relevant deadline UK's extra will open mid-february and will usually stay open until early July applicants are eligible for extra if they have used all five choices and are not holding any offers not all institutions have programs open in extra and normally Imperial does not go into extra however there are many institutions that do so if you are eligible for extra please make some inquiries with institutions to find out if they have any programs in extra 31st of March is the UK's recommended deadline for institutions to make decisions Imperial work towards meeting this deadline as do most Russell group institutions if you have received all your decisions on your choices by the 31st of March then you Cass will require you to reply to any offers by early May this will then provide institutions with information on how many applicants have made them their firm or insurance choice and how many have declined the offer when we get to mid-august this is when a level results are released to applicants and institutions will either confirm places or reject this is also when you cast adjustment opens applicants placed in adjustment by you Cass if they have met and exceeded their offer if applicants are placed into adjustment and are happy with where they have been confirmed they do not have to take any action however if an applicant is in adjustment and now wants to see if they can secure a place at an institution that they didn't originally apply for for example because they didn't think they could meet the entry requirements they can now approach the institution however adjustment is dependent on the program being open in adjustment typically Imperial does not enter into adjustment adjustment closes at the end of August therefore if an applicant is placed into adjustment and wants to try and secure a place elsewhere they only have a period of time to do that clearing also opens in mid-august and whilst Imperial doesn't go into clearing there are many institutions that do I think one of the key things to remember if you find yourself in the position where you have not been confirmed anywhere is not to panic take some time to find out the options available to you speak to your teachers parents Guardian about what those options are and what you'd like to do try not to decide on the first thing that's offered to you keep in mind that you'll be studying the subject for three four even more years at an institution you probably didn't originally apply to so the last thing you want to do is sign up to a degree where after the first term you're not enjoying it and you're not happy where you are studying it might be better to take a gap year give yourself time to think and then reapply FIU cast again I'm often asked whether the personal statement is important to Imperial it must definitely is we look at the entire application and therefore the personal statement together with the reference will be taken into consideration when deciding who to make offers to for those departments who don't interview or who to invite for interview it's very important that you think about the program that you are applying for we have specific engineering programs so rather than just talk about engineering in general you should focus your statement on the specific area of engineering that you are applying to for example civil mechanical given the number of applications we receive competition for places is very high therefore we want to know that you are serious about the program you are applying for other things to think about in your personal statement is grammar and spelling any relevant work experience work experience is a requirement for those applying to medicine if you are called for interview the interview may start with a question on your personal statement so remember what you have written if you've made reference to a book or an article remember why you did that always remember that your application is the first and depending on the program you are applying to your only opportunity to make a good impression a good tip is to ask someone else for example a teacher a parent or even a friend to read your personal statement before you submit it so what will admissions look at when deciding who to invite to interview they will look at a number of things the program selection is very important why do you want to study the subject what do you know about the subject not just in terms of how the degree program is taught at Imperial but what is happening nationally or internationally in that area what is happening in industry for a program like medicine what is going on in the NHS what are the current issues in health admissions tutors we'll look at your reference what is being said about how you are how you are performing in your individual subjects but also how you behave in the wider school community are you a captain of a team a mentor a buddy in the school do you have any interest in the local community at the interview a kickstart question might be why do you want to study this subject so you need to be prepared to answer that question think about what interests you about the subject what you have read about the subject what you might want to do after completing your degree what makes a successful interview a number of things motivation for the subject you are applying to study some degree programs here at Imperial or four years in duration they include a year in industry or abroad and our medical degree is six years including a BSC year therefore it's important for us to know that you will be able to sustain your enthusiasm for the subject throughout your time here what you know about the subject and course is also important not just in terms of academia but also what's happening outside of that nationally and internationally your overall performance at the interview is also important we know that interviews can be challenging so our aim is not to try and trick you we are interested to know more about you and why you're interested in the subject that you have applied for time management is also important we want you to engage with college life our Student Union has many clubs and societies that you will want to join but you'll need to be able to manage those commitments alongside your studies here is Imperial interview and selection days vary you experience a one to one style interview or a panel interview of two to three panel members this style of interview is the format for those applying to medical school at Imperial the panel may consist of a lay observer a lay observer is usually a teacher ahead of sixth form from a school they play no part in the interview and are there just to observe mainly to take back information to their pupils who may be interested in applying to medical school at Imperial you may also experience a group style session where a particular topic or object is given to the group and they are asked to discuss you will be observed on how you interact with the group your listening skills how you articulate your views and your opinions whatever the type of interview if you are invited to attend an interview we will always tell you what you can expect on the day if we do not please do not hesitate to ask I'll now give you some information on the style of interviews in some of our departments Dyson School of Design engineering a one-to-one interview questions on maths engineering design and focus on communication skills Department of bioengineering a 1 to 1 or a 2 to 1 interview assess group activity where the group is observed Department of computing interview could start with a question on something you've written in your personal statement so as I mentioned earlier it's important to remember what you've written motivation for the subject suitability for the course are also important if you are invited to an interview for medicine as you can see they're looking for skills and attributes related to being a doctor your approach to medicine as a career evidence of teamwork not just with fellow students but also with healthcare professionals medical students are in practice working in the NHS trust from the very start of their studies so it's essential that potential medical students are ready for that environment your ability to communicate effectively your maturity of character motivation to study medicine the program is six years in duration with a BSc in the fourth year so it's essential that those wishing to study medicine are prepared for the energy hard work and determination required we have two external admissions tests that some applicants have to take the first is the biomedical admissions test beam at which all applicants applying to the sixth year medical degree program have to take the test can be taken either in August or October we accept either but the test can only be taken once so please bear this in mind here are some key dates regarding the be mat test if you decide to go for the August test registration opens on the 24th of June registration closes 11th of August and the test date is the 20th of October if you decide to go for the October test registration opens 1st of September registration closes 1st of October the test date is 30th of October we use the be mat test as the first selection criteria therefore on the basis of the results of the test we will reject applicants you will find information on our website regarding the scores we looked for for 2019 entry please note that some medical schools require their applicants to take the UK cat test so please make sure that you take the right test for the medical school you are applying to the other external emissions test we require is the mathematics admissions test ma T which all applicants applying to our degree programs in maths have to take those applying for the joint maths and computing degree are not required to take the m80 registration opens on 1st of September registration closes 15th of October and the test takes place 30th of October both the B Matt and ma T tests are understood by Cambridge assessment Admissions Testing Service and you will find further information about the test via this link this testing service also administers the sixth term examination paper step which we sometimes add as an additional condition to our offers for maths and computing degree programs there are three step papers one two and three step one is based on a level maths step two is based on a level maths and AAS level further maths and step three is based on a level maths and a level further maths make sure you spend time researching not only the subjects you are interested in but the institutions you think you want to study at try and go to as many open days as you can and talk to your teachers and parents for advice and guidance I hope you apply to Imperial as we are a vibrant institution with lots to offer with an excellent reputation if you do apply to us remember to keep in touch and if you have any queries about admissions please do not hesitate to contact admissions good luck with your application
