Add initial endorser

welcome everyone to looking at the endorser program database this database is you access it via CCL community and you have to be logged into community to be able to see it to find it you can go to one of the easiest ways is to go to search and support and type in something like endorser program and you'll be able to find it find it there or endorse our database and you can also find it under if you go under Action Teams you can go to the endorser program interface and you can find it from the endorser program homepage from there so if you go to endorsers under programs you'll be able to find it from there once here at what we've done with the new endorser program is we tried to make it really simple especially for people who are new to the system and people who are you know the first time there and they want to you know add a new endorser or upload a signed endorsement now the first thing we want people to do whenever they're working in the endorser databases we want to prevent duplicates we want to make sure that you search our database to see if that organization is there first so if you're working you know if you've been working with a local business or a national business or something like that you're going to want to search for that here first so you might be working with you know you might think like I want to work with Apple Computer and so you type in Apple and you can see that Oh Apple Computer is already in here in Cupertino California I should talk to the delegate he's already working with them and that happens to be me at least in the database right now and if you want to to connect with that delegate you can click on their name and that will actually take you to a place on community where you can contact them through the CCL community interface you're not going to wait for that to load but but if let's say you want to add a new endorser and you're pretty sure it's not in the database so I'm going to demonstrate that right now so I'm going to search first to make sure it's not there and then that enables this button that says add an endorser or endorsement and so I click on that it will bring up a screen and the first thing is does is it asks you what do you want to do and so in this case I understand there's a most simple thing which is to add an endorser but there's also options for uploading an already signed leaders letter emailing a request to final leaders letter uploading a municipal endorsement or uploading a newspaper editorial I'm going to start with the simple adding a new endorser that I plan to work with so let's say that this person is an individual and I'm just going to name them test tester son and give them a title and we always want to know where their they live because then we can make sure that helps us attract duplicates and then we want to always assign either a chapter or an action team so you can choose one or the other two but you have to have at least one of those to assign and then you hit save and close and that will get someone into our database so that and it assigns view as the delegate will start working on them and you can see this message here says this endorser can now be find on your found on your my endorsers tab so I'll show that in just a second you go there and you can see tests tests erson is here on your list of my endorsers now you can see it still has a yellow border and what that means is that this endorser is still pending we have a team of endorser admins who go through and they make sure that there's not duplicates in the database so they realize as if someone else had already put in test testers in then they would contact you and work on merging those records and making sure that you were cooperating with whoever else's work you got it but in the meantime you can still go ahead and work in the database with the what you've put in you can also see that if something is highlighted in green and that means that it's already signed endorsement I don't have any of those right here but you can imagine what that looks like so other possibilities you might do a search and you might actually find that the people that you want to go endorse sure that you want to work with is already in the database so there's a couple different situations the one could be that there's that they're in the database and there's already a delegate working with them in this case I created a test corporation and I assign Peter as a delegate and so when I you notice I don't have an edit button here I can't start working on that because that would potentially step on Peters toes because he's already working on this on the relationship with test incorporated so instead what I can do is I can apply could be a delegate it tells you what it means to be a delegate you click apply and that's going to send a message to our endorsement admin team and they're going to review that work with the existing delegates to see if we can cooperate on working on this on this project and you can see that that will also show up in your my endorsers page down in the bottom under pending delegate application applications you can see here that it still has a status of pending there's also a possibility that you'll do the search and you'll find an organization or a person that you want to work with and no one's working on them you have their in the database for they could be in there already for a variety of reasons we've imported a number of lists of important organizations that we'll get to in a little bit but let's say you want to work on mister tess.johnson you can just go ahead straight to the editing and so you can click on edit and you'll notice here that when you when you go to the Edit screen it says note by taking one of these actions you will become the delegate for this endorsers so at this point you can't just go in and start editing any listing that you want without becoming the delegate for that listing so once you touch it it's yours if you that becomes a problem you can let the admins know and they can they can undo that process but you can see that this endorser already has the basic information but I might you know put in the website or the endorser or I might put in some notes about you know how I know this person or what kind of relationship of why I think they might be supportive of us and I can hit save and close and that will add them to to the database and you can see it just added myself as a as a delegate there and you can see that they will then show up on your my endorsers page and so that you know this one is already approved since it was already in the database and so it doesn't have the yellow the yellow outline I I'll get into some of the other steps that you can take when you're editing in a second but I want to point out that there is also an advanced search functionality if you're if you want to do some dive deeper into the database and look at you know show me everything in a certain state show me everything in a certain district show me everything connected to a certain chapter showing me only the ones who are already signed etc you can do that here on the Advanced Search tab and so you can come up with some really good lists and on all of these tabs you are able to export the data that you that you see on the screen so once you got something filter the way you want or you just want to export your list you can click on this little Excel icon and that will export your data to a CSV file that you can open in a any sort of spreadsheet including Google Docs and that can be a good way for you to track things or work on things as a team if you if you need to work on them outside of a database let me show a little bit more of what you can do when you're editing one of these endorsers so you can edit more of their basic information you can put some overall notes on the endorser so you know you know you know best friend from college you know might you know with you know Paul Ryan or something like that you know so you can you can add some notes into here about who this person is and why they're relevant you could also put in you know what congressional districts they're related to here and all that and then you can also if this is a corporation or you know someone who's a public figure and they've got a public statement that they've made on climate change or on climate policy you can actually note that in here and so you know let's say they're a corporation and they've made a pledge that they are working on reducing emissions you can do that here if they're they've already got something on there if they're an organization has a policy statement let's say it's the you know the League of Conservation Voters or the League of Women Voters they have policy statements on how they would like to see climate address and you can you know take the best match from this list and you know choose that and so I'm going to say that this person you know calls for some climate action and then to justify that link for that position you want to provide some sort of link to a webpage and some sort of evidence now if there's no webpage that you can link to you can just put it in you know not applicable but you definitely want to be putting in some sort of evidence then so but you could just you know cut and paste that in and I'm just going to put in test for now so I'll be able to save this so that those public positions will show up here in the searches as well as on the advanced search so that and as Peter mentioned you know summon some endorsers are going to be making you know signing leaders letters but some might be making public position statements or might already have public position statement and those can be equally or in some cases more valuable when you bring them in to your member of congress so both of those are valuable things of a sign endorsement or public position for some organizations or even for individuals there's other contacts that you might want to add but you can you can add those here we've also got a system where you can add notes and history so if this is an organization that you're working with ongoing and you want to keep track of how things are going with them you can say you know today we met with you know the chairman you know without a doubt uh you can put those notes in here you can change the status to responsive and engage and you can save that and then as you come back later you'll be able to see all the notes and minutes and history that you might have with that organization similarly if they were making a series of public pronouncements you know let's say you wanted to record that Ellen left made a speech at the Paris climate summit you could do that as well the other thing I want to add in here is there's this new system for connecting endorsers to members of Congress so you know before all we had was a system where you could indicate what district does this endorser live or you know where their headquarters located but there's obviously a lot of organization and individuals that are connected to multiple members of concerts especially at a minimum they might be connected to your representative and to your Senators but they might additionally they might donate money to another to another member of Congress or they might have connections with another member of Congress because there's they have branches in their districts so you can take this and you can add a connection to a member of Congress and you can basically say you know this you know you know there's a major business in the district of you can talk about you know that they have a hundred thousand you know employees in the district and you can specify which member of Congress and so I'll choose my member of Congress which is taking a moment to come up but she should cannot barbara lee from california thirteen and i can click Save and then that will note that this you know that this endorser is related to this member of Congress and you can do that with as many members of Congress as you'd like for each endorsement for each endorser so that's all well and good but how do we get to the point where we where we actually want to upload a sign in dorset what does that look like so you can do that either from the initial add an endorser button or from here and it's more or less the same so you can upload an already signed leaders letter and what that does is it's going to ask you for the same kind of information it's going to ask which kind of letter you had them sign let's say it's a carbon fee and dividend letter and then it will ask the date that they signed it so we'll say they find it on July 1st and then you'll click on save and next and it'll just ask you to look at that information and verify the death accurate when you click verify it will save that and then it will give you a button where you can upload a scan or a photo of the endorsement and so you'll look on your computer and you'll find you know the endorsement letter on your on your busy desktop and you'll it'll take a second but that should upload that that file and then and the done button should have appear and you can click done and now that endorser it turns green because they are now marked as having find the endorsements you can also as Peter mentioned there is ways to send an endorsement letter electronically so if you choose email a request to sign a leaders letter then you go through a very similar process you pick the carbon C and dividends letter you make sure that all this information is filled in and now you have to have an email address to make this work so I'm going to make sure they've got filled in there put in one of my email addresses and click Save and next step again you verify the information you have verified and send signature and that's actually going to send an email to the endorser where they'll be able to click click on that link and it will take them to a pre filled out form with all of their information ready and the write check boxes checked and all they'll have to do is you know verify it and click Save and then that will you know be saved in our database and I'll send you an email as the delegate letting you know that the Bespin side I want to go over a little more on the Connexions between endorsers and members of Congress so to help out our volunteers and and chapters and action teams we pre-loaded the database with the top 50 donors to each member of Congress based on data that's available openly from the Federal Election Commission so you go to this tab and you it will automatically put in your member of Congress based on the congressional district you live in but you can change this to a different member of Congress if you want to I want it to look up my senator instead I could choose Barbara Boxer and and that will you know give you a sense of you know here's a list of people who we know are engaged politically with this member of Congress right because they're giving money to their campaign or in some cases people who work for an organization or are members of a union are giving money to that campaign the way that donations are tracked with the Federal Election Commission it's tracked by employers so so you can see here that these you know some of these different organizations or individuals or these are all organizations some of these organizations are have you know major donors to Barbara Boxer and that can give you a sense that if you're looking to see you know who might be a good endorser for you know to go after this gives you a sense of who it might be and so if you're seeing businesses and maybe businesses are the place to go if you're seeing unions and maybe unions are the way to go you know other NGOs that are you know in your area then you can go talk to them and you know see if they'll endorse our policy so that that gives you give you some sense of who is already engaged politically with your member of Congress or with a member of Congress and then it also allows that when you do go into you know if I want to look if I became the the the delegate for one of these organizations I can actually go in and see that not only do they donate to my member of Congress but they donate to a number of members of Congress so you know this is an example of a Union the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and not surprisingly they give to a lot of a lot of campaign probably I'm guessing more Democrats than conservatives just based on how that generally goes politically I think that that's it for now so Ricky if we've got time for questions and we should go for it absolutely and Tornado know you've been demonstrating and Peter I don't know if you've been looking in the chat and the questions but a lot of people are blown away by this and I just want to say I mean blown away in a good way not not in a bad way let me clarify but Tony I think one one one question I would ask were first and then you can just real quick you know what what someone's required a level of engagement with all the different features you were showing so like you know like if someone doesn't want to do all those things you know what it's really just the basic was required I mean if you're working on endorsements already and you go out and get a paper letter sign then you know really your only thing you need to do is you come here you say add an endorsement you you say I want to upload an already sign leaders letter you put in the basic information here tell us which letter they sign you know click save and go to the next step and you know upload upload the picture of that and you're done and like that's all we need is to you know is once you've recorded it you know once you've gotten a signed endorsement we need to record that in the database so that we can keep track of that and share it with the appropriate people if you're if you're cultivating an endorser you're welcome to do that as much as you like in terms of you know recording information in the database but the only thing that I was the minimum that I would suggest is add them to the database make sure that we know you're the delegate for them and then you know if you never touch the database again until they sign that letter you know that's fine that's the minimum that we have awesome and so a couple people have asked as well you know who can be a delegate and explain delegate just a little bit more in detail right so the delegate is basically the point person from ppl to a given person or a given organization and there we've got room for each endorser to have up to two delegates and so you know the responsibilities of a delegate we sort of try to spell it out here and you know to build a personal relationship with the endorser to determine the most effective actions and goals for that endorser and ensure that the data in the database is kept up to date so basically we're saying you're the point person it's fine if you're working on that with your chapter or your action team or a number of different volunteers but it's just you're the one that when we say hey who's working on the who's working with Apple Computer we can go to you and say hey how's that going you know do you want to work with this other person here's this interesting program that we heard about well know who to talk to and we can also just see that if someone's already working on organization or individual you know we'll know that you know not to not to duplicate that effort great Paul asked and you may have covered this Tony but I think it's important thing maybe want to just cover it one one more time you know Ken all the endorsers for a specific place or a specific member of Congress if you'll just demonstrate you know how to do that again real quick yeah so if you're looking for a specific place so if I you know went in and said you know I can start type in California and choose that from the list and that's gonna filter this list by endorsers that have the state equal in California and I might say oh that's still too big of a list you know let me just look at my districts for California thirteen and now the thing is that's only going to list the ones that have the district actually set at California thirteen it doesn't you know so that's you know you're getting one list here of like let me show me the the endorses that are in a certain district or in a certain state you can also you know filter these lists if I take California and I say I just want to see the ones that are signed I can go and I can filter and I can see just assigned endorsements for the state of California and again these are ones where they where the where they're listed as existing in that state now similarly if you want to see which ones are connected to your member of Congress then you might need to go to the mo see connections tab because there might be organizations and individuals that are connected to your member of Congress that don't that are not in your district or in your state that you know that might have a headquarters somewhere else that are still giving money or otherwise engaged with your member of Congress so those are the two ways that that I would go to together to get a report and again you can always scroll to the bottom and actually you can't you can't actually export right now on the on the Advanced Search page but we didn't want people to export the entire list from our database but you can export from the mo see connections or from your endorsers or if you're a chapter leader or a state coordinator you can export from you have special tab that you can export from as well so Tony I think I see a bug with the database it has Mark Reynolds listed in there as a delegate I don't know if that's ever going to happen anyways what well he had listed it with Don Cheadle and I do believe he had met with him recently awesome okay so we got some other questions here Peter's doing a good job of answering most of them but I think a couple of them probably deserve an answer and so everyone can hear Joe asks you know when you have an endorser in the database that you're working on just clarify it will not be green until the person actually signs the email version or uploads or you know whatever until it's official right exactly so the green color is you know designed to indicate this is an endorsement that's been officially signed in some way either online or paper records and and that's how you get it to turn that green color awesome Lisa asked a very good question you know how does a liaison use the endorsement letters so you know what we're at this point we didn't we don't have that many signed endorsements at this point and so what we're working on is you know gathering this data right now and then we're also trying to set up systems where we're going to be able to push this back out into the field and so we did that at the June conference we sent data to state coordinators and regional coordinators so they could share it as appropriate we're also working on being able to send that back out to group leaders we could send that out to liaison so that they can keep track of you know here are the signed endorsements that are related to your the member of Congress that you're working with so as that data is gathered we'll be setting up systems to push it out to those people and I'm not sure exactly what that formats going to look like right now but but the group leaders and the state coordinators and the regional coordinators already get monthly reports we can do something similar for liaisons and then how you use that that's really up to you to decide you want to bring them all you know you know come to you a member of Congress with a printed out copy of the letter and the signatures on it do you want to try and bring the signatory to actually meet with your member of Congress you know you're gonna have to work on that question locally and it's going to depend on your situation but I think we'll be talking more and more about that as we get more and more endorsements and groups and liaisons find more and more effective ways to use them also Peter did you have anything you wanted to add to that or maybe even just recap how J was able to use the leaders letter in South Florida to really move the needle there yeah sure it is price you know two answers one is the the kind of a technical answer which which I think Tony got at which is trying to figure out how to parse up the B endorsers to make sure that the most effective name show up on those meetings and just the one answer to that that is that's why we're doing it at the state level right now because it's kind of though it is a little tough to parse it out like that but the more general answer in terms of cultivating that relationship there's a lot of answers to that you know what you'll find and my experience is the more folks that you talk to the more connections are going to make it's just a natural networking experience and so you'll start to identify who are good connections for the member of Congress who you know based on who's willing to sign the letter some folks aren't comfortable signing a letter but they will join me for a meeting with a member of Congress you know they say I don't know if I want to sign up yet but I'd be happy to come along to a meeting something like that so there's there's a lot of ways to again not just look at the signing of the letter as the endgame but in fact part of a process great I'm so a couple the vast really sort of specific questions and I just want to make sure everyone knows how to get help you know after this webinar as well so you know there's some questions I like you know well what happens if we want to pass on you know endorser to someone who's more qualified and those types of things so the database is great and I can tell you that these two have spent a lot of time working on this I hope it shows like how how great this tool is but there's going to be some things that you might need to contact the endorser program for so Peter that email is endorsed at citizens climate org and is that right and then people can find they can contact you they go to the endorse or program home page on community as well right that's right yeah the endorse of citizens climate is sort of a helpdesk for everything so you can if you're not comfortable using the database you can submit science leaders letters that way you can ask questions that's that's really the place to go awesome and then Joe asked a question I think you know this is a question that we've spent a lot of time figuring out and I'm you know is I don't think it's ever going to be perfect but Joe asked you know how to handle big companies where multiple connections it could exist you know like Target or Walmart you know like what's the deal there how do we do that so you both can probably take a stab at that oh go ahead even ahead Peter yeah I mean I guess so actually this this issue exists in a couple of forms companies are companies are an important one because companies generally you know any field office is going to defer back to the sort of corporate typically for companies so you're probably not going to get a local signature for a company or a local position statement or is going to defer to corporate however you bring up a good point you know I think I raised the example in my reply okay HP has a campus here and they employ 3,000 people you know you know how does that how do I show that connection because their headquarters are over there they're nowhere near here so you know I think at this point the moc connection tool that Tony's recently introduced will allow chapters locally to identify those connections where they exist and create them so you know it could be a little laborious but you know where you have those connections you can now add them which is great just just to add to that real quick though companies are not the only entities where that's an issue depending on you know we deal with a lot of NGO groups a lot of advocacy groups and whatnot to so you know I've been working with college Republicans for example collared Republicans are very in Division terms of commerce to every chamber of commerce is independent so it's not like their subsidiary to the National Chamber of Commerce so it just be aware of whether or not they can sort of make their own decisions or not and and you know and that will kind of help you figure out that issue as well whether or not this local or if that's truly national Tony did you want to add anything to that and out yeah I'll just said that the business climate leaders action team is it focuses a lot on some of the major corporations and so you might check with them for help if you're working on some large organization and there's going to be they're going to have suggestions on what the process is to engage with with them in terms of finding the sustainability coordinator eventually trying to get to their government affairs officials you know those kinds of things like what is it really going to take to get an organization like Target or Walmart to sign on or support our policy in some way and so you know definitely utilize that resource they're a very active action team and so you know I hardly encourage connecting with the business climate leaders so we have like about a minute and a half and two quick questions I want to get to Joe asked you know just that same example Duke Energy you know they have four sub companies could these can considered four separate endorser entities because I have their own presidents I think the short answer that is you got to find out if they have the ability to sign themselves or to make an assign a letter themselves they may not have that ability as Peter was saying earlier but did you have anything you wanted to add to that Peter or Tony I would say that in I'll say that in the database there's a way to mark something as a parent organization and then subsidiary organizations we didn't get to that because it's sort of high-level detail but you'll definitely want to do that it's fine to seek endorsements from all of them and you know as Ricky said you may or may not be able to succeed in that you may be able to get them to state public positions etc but you know it's going to depend on a case-to-case basis all right let's listen end last question from Lynn Lynn asked you know if someone or a company or entity has made a clear public statement in favor of climate action or even carbon fee and dividend or revenue for carbon tax should we request that this organization or entity go ahead and sign the community leaders letter the question comes up a lot and I would say I'll leave it up to you my personal opinion is if an organization has already taken that position given the limited resources we have I would prefer to spend my time focus on other organizations that aren't quite there yet having said that the process of pursuing the leaders letter and it gives you a good ask kind of a good excuse to go talk to an organization so if you already have an organization that's friendly to doing something on climate but still have been groups to go talk to you because you know they might help you get support from others so I don't think there's a hard yes or no answer to that I think it all depends on the situation it's probably very helpful but go ahead Tony and I'll add that you know building the relationship with such a group is going to be valuable they might point you to other people they might be willing to actually come into a Lobby meeting because even though they've got a public statement online there may be more that they are able and willing to do to support our efforts so but giving them to find a leaders letter may not be that thing but it's worth building the relationship yeah I I agree I would just add to that I think it gives your chapter of some momentum to and some tangible results and say oh yeah look we were able to get one of these so I think it could help it is the top of the hour so you know everyone you certainly feel free to drop off now no one's required to stay we do have a couple of questions left we have someone who's got their hands raised too so Tony and Peter if you can hang out like another five minutes and just answer some more questions you guys have time to do that sure thing so let's go ahead Marie coper has her hand raised her Maria I'm gonna unmute your line and if you will just let us know where you're joining us from and then fire away with your question hi oh no pressure doors now no well like I said the endorse at citizen climate org email this yeah feel free to question well thanks so much for being with us tonight we have another question in the in the questions section there used to be a way to indicate that an organization has a public position already without without actually contacting them given evidence from their published information online can that still be done to fill in the gaps of the database to make it more thorough for lobbying it can then if it's an organization that you have you can click to edit on so if it you know if I go here to edit then I can you know add a public position and I can say you know look they called for a carbon fee or tax we did it on you know this you know website etc and I can you know paste in a little bit of the text that you know shows where they've done that so this is where you record those public positions now if it's an organization that already has a delegate and so there's no edit button and what you would have to do is you would click on this message and say I want to and then use a user system and community to send a message to the delegate saying hey I saw this link you should record this in the endorsers database so if you want to take over and be the you know do the editing yourself you can otherwise you're going to have to go through the delegate if you find a list of you know here's 100 companies that have all signed on to this climate pledge then you can email that to the endorse that citizens climate org and they can look at how to potentially you know get that integrated into our database
