[Music] welcome to growing for good with funding for good I am Mandy Pierce owner of funding for good and I am here today to talk with you about grant writing and a lot of questions that we got for a webinar we did back in December where we took questions from folks all over the country that they had related to grant writing and we did an open-ended webinar where we answered as many as we could Marie and I got together and we answered about 20 they were they were kind of in-depth questions which was great to hear from the fundraising community around the country and we got a couple we didn't get to so we told people we would either do a video or a blog or answer them on our Facebook page and today I am here to answer another one for us this is a question as it was sent to us directly if we send an LOI which for those of you who don't know is a letter of inquiry or a letter of intent via email so that's maybe for an organization that only lists an email as a contact should it be on letterhead as a letter attached or just in the body of the email message and that's a great question I'm gonna answer this the way that I would and a lot of you get tired of hearing me say this but my first question would be have you reached out via email to the program officer and said hey we'd love to send a letter of inquiry and would you prefer that it be on letterhead as an attachment or is it okay just to include it in the body that would be my first saying I never try to assume what a foundation would want and if it's not clearly written on their website or in their guidelines I would try to ask if it if you send two emails and don't get a response or you've if you've been able to find a phone number I would call and ask but this question was specifically for if you can't find a phone number and I'll tell you a little secret if you go to the foundation's 990s on the very first page in the upper section the very first section there's always a phone number listed so you can try there if you're unable to get anyone there again you can try the email but additionally if you look on page 10 of the 90s in section gosh I think it's 14 or 15 number two there's always contact information there for the nation they don't always list a phone number but sometimes they do and sometimes there's a different email address there than what might be available on the website so there's a couple of different places you can go to look but again I would always ask what they would prefer first and worst case scenario you can't get anyone to respond to you in any way and you just have to wing it what I would do personally is I would put that on letterhead and attach it and I would also put it in the body of the email that way in case they just skim through the email they can see it quickly and if they need a more formal copy potentially with a signature on it from you they can print that off as well and share it with their board so I think that those are the ways that I would go myself and I hope that that was helpful you [Music]
