Add person validated

hey guys absolute zero here and in this video I'm gonna be talking to you guys about validating user input so what I have set up here is a basic program is going to take input from the user and assign it to an int variable so pretty simple we've done this before so if I run this program please enter a whole number so I type 6 it works now if I run it and I type something like 2 or anything on the program is going to crash and it says right here the exception is in my main method open that back up and it's on line 13 so let's go see what line 13 is so line 13 I'm assigning my value to my integer so basically what that means is it crashed when I try to assign something that wasn't an integer to in integer so we have to find a way to stop that from happening because we can't always control what users do you know sometimes they may try to do something that we don't want them to do and it could crash your program if we don't find a way to deal with that so the way we do that with the scanner if you guys are using different input methods like the i/o package or something like that there's other methods but with scanner it's pretty straightforward I think you guys should get it pretty easy and that's one of the main reasons I recommend using the scanner it's easy to deal with stuff like this so back on topic so what you guys going to do you're just going to highlight this try that again highlight that right-click surround with if statement so what we're going to put for our condition is the name of our scanner so input and now this is the method were to use where do you have has next and then whatever you're looking for so we're looking for in so we're just going to type int and empty brackets and there's our if statement this line of code right here what it basically does is it checks whatever the user types in to see if it's an integer and we have next double or next char next anything but right here we're checking for an int so it's going to check to see if it's an int and if they enter an int so like 8 or whatever they decide to put in this will be true and then it will assign whatever they typed in to our number variable but if they type something in that's not in it like one point two or they type the word two it'll stop this code from happening so it won't crash our program so I'll just give you guys a quick example of that I go one point to it does it assign the value one point two to our number variable so it just prints out zero cuz that's why I initialize to that so pretty simple and I'll just show you guys what happens if they do what they're supposed to so six dozen toasty so that's pretty cool but what happens if you guys have to get input from the user so they have to put in a number no matter what we can't just have it oh no it's not right and keep going we have to get them to put in a number so the way we're to do that is we're gonna use a loop so again right click surround with do-while statement and we're going to make a boolean for a condition for the loop will just go is number and put it there for a condition is number I'll have that there just to flip the value guys we'll see you in a second and it has been initialized yet initialized in a second so if they type in whatever we want them to type in one set is number equal to true because they entered what we want so we want to get out of the loop now we just have to have an else statement of course we need more curly brackets but there's a lot of curly brackets in Java but anyway so we're just going to tell them that they did something they were exposed to print line I don't understand you pretty simple semicolon and then reset is number equal to false and that gets rid of our air down there so let's run this so if we do what we're supposed to program runs just fine but if we do something rot supposed to what cause right now is we get what's called an infinite loop I've talked you guys a little bit about that before and I'll explain to you why we're getting an infinite loop it's just gonna keep going through this um the reason is when we hit this if statement right here we assign a value to the scanner but we're not doing anything with it so the value staying in the scanner because we're not we're not going input dot next whatever so the values staying in the scanner so we can't reuse the scanner and put more data into it until we get rid of the data that's already in there that's what's basically happening is we're putting a value in here and every time it comes back up here it's just using the value we put in before so it's not getting rid of it so we can use it again and so what you guys have to do is you have to get rid of the data we put into the scanner so you do that by going input dot next and all that does is it gets rid of everything in the scanner so we can use it again because you can't use a scanner that already has data in it make sense so we're just going to hit play and enter a whole number so if we do something we're not supposed to now it works I don't understand you so we're to go seven and it works and to make this work a little bit better you guys could always take this and put it inside your loop so now now every time it goes around it's going to execute that so it'll be like I don't understand you enter a whole number and it works so you guys can do that too so that's how you guys Bala date user input it's really simple um back to another point I forgot to explain this the reason this statement right here works is because we're assigning a value to it like I said before until we do something with that value because has next int doesn't do anything other than the check to see if it's an integer all it stays in it so when we do this it use the sinter that gets rid of it so that's why it this works but that makes sense so if you guys missed anything you know remember to ask a question I promise I'll try to buy very best to get back to you as soon as I possibly can I mean this video helps you guys I really appreciate if you drop me a like you know just let me know people are actually enjoying these videos people are watching and enjoying it you know makes me feel better about making them basically want to make more videos for you guys so other than that I'd really appreciated you guys went to follow me on Twitter I'm constantly updating stuff that's going on with my channel whenever videos are coming out and I really want to do a live stream in the future but right now I just don't have the viewer base to do one but if you guys would like to see a live stream let me know in the comment section below so anyways guys thanks for watching and as always until next time stay frosty and hope you guys all have a great day
