Signature block quote
hey I am your friendly neighborhood teacher and I wanted to talk today about block quotes because a lot of you guys are writing your papers are going to need them it's a format we use to make it easier for our readers to follow along when we insert textual evidence it's fairly significant not just a couple of words or lines but actually a passage and so I just wanted to go over with you today a little bit about what that format of block quote actually looks like so here's a paper written by a extraordinarily talented student um at Riverdale country school and he's working on a paper this is just the beginning of a draft nice title and italics too-good-to-be-true evil an allusion and Shakespeare's Macbeth very sophisticated student and he starts off you know in this his intro starts off with a really nice interesting question and goes on to say that Shakespeare's Macbeth actually starts provides an answer to that question and that in this paper he argues that Macbeth's tendency to have hallucinations like the dagger or as you'll see Banquo's ghost um actually is his sort of unconscious way of coming to terms with what he really wants so that's what um this student is arguing and then in the first body paragraph he says the student goes on to write in act 2 scene 1 Macbeth is trying to decide whether he should kill Duncan after sending away a servant Macbeth says is this a dagger I see before me the handle toward my hand calm let me clutch thee I have thee not and yet I see thee still I though not fatal vision sensible to feeling us decide or art thou but a dagger of the mind a false creation proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain that guy could write huh so if you notice something here's the first thing to notice right this is a lot of text here it's one it's a one two three three-and-a-half lines of text right whenever you have more than three full lines of text or prose I should say as you write out the textual evidence if you have more than three line whole lines of prose when you insert the textual evidence you should make a blockquote and the first thing to do is to notice that this comma here boom becomes a colon then you hit return a couple of times to get a space between your introducing the textual evidence macbeth says colon and the texture 11 I do here I erase the quotation mark okay then at this point I erase the other quotation mark and then over here I actually get rid of any of that punctuation because the citation is going to come after the final punctuation which is a question mark and then here I insert again another space between the actual textual evidence a blockquote and the rest of my prose and here's where it gets interesting I take the block quote over there and I actually make it single spaced Wow and now I go over here and I indent it oh just about two there and you can abolish just about two there is good just about an inch in or so let me say yeah that's good um and that my friends is a block quote you see that um to recap how to do that here's what we do block quotes when do we use them we use block quote format anytime our textual evidence takes up three or more full lines of prose in our paper okay how do we make a block quote well the first thing to do is insert a space before and after the block quote delete the question the quotation marks use a colon to introduce the block quote not a comma single space the block quote indent the block quote on both sides and then the citation the page number or in this case the act scene and line numbers come after the final punctuation question mark period or whatever else so this is blockquote as you can see if you have any questions about this please let me know who but hopefully this little video was helpful bye bye
