hey guys in this video we're going to talk with a couple of our pursue dad pastors about how to do a baby dedication so we're gonna talk about why they should do one while you maybe should consider doing them if you don't do them and then also how to do it and at the end of this video we're gonna give you the shot of an actual baby dedication so you can see it in action so let's start with why why should a pastor even consider doing a baby dedication what's the advantage I think dedications are a great thing for your church it's a good opportunity to really celebrate with that family you know every every baby every life is a gift from God so it's an opportunity to get that family up in front of the rest of the extended church family and celebrate with them I think we're celebrating people pursuing God - when you think about it parents committing to help their children pursue God so I think that's a great time to celebrate the pursuit of God do people do more guests show up at a baby dedication typically yes yeah it's it's a it's a really good time people are gonna invite friends and family so you're gonna get a lot of people there that wouldn't normally come on a Sunday okay do you typically do it at the beginning of service middle service and a service is there a rule of thumb er we do it at the beginning of service right after the right after the Welcome is when we bring them up alright so let's talk about the I typically start a baby dedication with an explanation of what the dedication is you know what what it is and what it isn't you know that the dedication doesn't save you but it's it's rather a commitment to helping your child come to know God to pursue God and so I share that so the audience knows and then and the family has a clear idea of what the ceremony is about so they don't get the wrong idea that this is like some ritual that saves a kid right and then second part after the the explanation is basically introducing the family and so we'll call the family up we'll introduce them by name and then we give them an opportunity to actually share their story if they've a story we don't we don't put a lot of pressure on them but we give them the opportunity to kind of introduce you know to share their story why they want to dedicate their child okay that sounds like it could be dangerous like actually actually the opposite usually happens they are they're terrified most people are pretty scared to get up in front of people on stage so to help with both ends you know whether somebody's gonna go long and just go off on a rabbit trail or whether they're just petrified they don't know what to say I typically encourage them to either draft some notes or even a full manuscript and and give that to me ahead of time so I have an idea of what is going to be presented but also how long it's going to be and I can also help them build that a little bit more so I try to and I encourage them you know this isn't meant to be long at all two to three minutes a really short introduction about what God has done in your life okay so how many people come up parents grandparents sisters brothers aunts uncles small group members I've done it both ways I've had the last one we just had the parents and then the child come up okay before that I've had the whole family come up okay and it kind of kind of created some challenges with having that many people come up now in the video we're gonna see that was at your campus it was just yeah just the parents yes and that's really what I recommend unless there's somebody unless I think unless they ask for somebody to come up that's really been influential in the family okay all right you know kind of in their life okay I would probably just kind of gravitate to just having the parents and the child come up is it an opportunity for couples that are in small groups is it an opportunity to plug a small group or if they have a marriage Mentor to have the marriage mentor come up I'd like to plug that as and I would encourage them you know as a part of their their what they're sharing with the audience I would say be sure and mention those people that have been influential in your life especially if they're you know gonna be there let's you know if it's a small group or it's a family member somebody mentored you be sure and mention that it's a it's a great reinforcement of what we're doing here okay so what I like to do after that the the the third part is really the vows makes it kind of ceremonial I ask I ask a couple of questions to the to the parents I ask him you know are you committing your child to God's guidance and protection you know make this official where it's the word is dedication so are you willing to dedicate your child over to God and then I also ask them are you willing to make that commitment to teach them to trust Jesus to honor God to help others and primarily doing that as an outflow of your life you know you're a living example for them so I asked that in a in a question and they say I do they they confirm you know they they affirm confirm have you ever said no no hopefully we rule that out before they get up on stage you know at first when it comes to that I was a little questionable about you know just how that would be perceived because it's not a wedding but I think it's to underplay the importance of having them make a verbal commitment that they're committing their child to God to the care and Trust of God I think it's important and it means quite a bit to them yeah and I asked I asked one final question I asked that to the audience I asked them as an extended family are you willing to help this family in their in their pursuit of having their kid come to know Christ and so I took you know they say it takes a whole village to raise a child so we try to bring in our whole congregation and we'll have the audience even respond and they'll say yes we do it I think the strength of that is is that it really does speak to the idea that we will pursue God together you know we're living life together and you're giving people the opportunity some I think some people they kind of forget that that we have influence and the kids you know at kids church even if you're not teaching kids church we have influence in each other's lives and doing that and having them do a verbal response I think reminds people about it mm-hmm you know the actual dedication part is you know typically if you can you hold the child and with the parents and with the congregation you invite everybody to with you and you pray over the child you know that God would bless them that they would come to know Jesus and you know try not to drag it out long enough to where people pass out but make sure it's meaningful and and Fame and and congratulate them and go on with the service the service well thanks for sharing it and we'll take a look now at an actual big dedication Adrian at your campus questions for Jason and bet you real quick are even today dedicating Ellen to the care and protection of God and do you two make yourselves to - you know this privilege and awesome responsibility that we have as parents to raise Emma in a way that she'll come to trust in Jesus honor God and help others and also living yourselves well not only is it a thing for the the parents dedicating their childhood God but they're not doing it alone in in you know family members I thank you guys for coming out and supporting them you guys have an awesome support with your family but but church family as well I want you to know that that we have a responsibility in this as well and so I want to ask you a question as the church family do you commit as as Jason and Becky pursue God and and made this commitment to raise Emma in a way that that she too will pursue God do you make a commitment to support and encourage them as they pursue God in this endeavor praise God well let's uh let's pray oh it's used to be afraid of holding my little ones always afraid to drop something all right will you pray with me father we we exult you for this this blessed gift Lord them the privilege that that you've given Jason and Becky to to be the parents of Emma and Lord I know what a blessing she is to to their lives already and so father we we commit Emma to you Lord we better care to you Lord that knowing that you're an all-powerful God knowing that that you love her far more than then we could ever love anyone of our children and that we give her to you knowing that that you are a mighty God and trusting your protection for her and your safety for her so Lord we also want to pray for for Jason and and Becky father as they as they make this commitment to raise Emma in a way that she'll come to know you will still put her trust in you or she'll live her life to honor you and what she'll just have this this desire to to help others do the same father we know that this is this is challenging a blessing at the same time with but challenging at times and so lord I pray that you would give them the strength to live in a way that honors you father that he would continue to change them from the inside out and that he would allow them to be such a blessing too to Emma's life that that she would see not only your love but she would see your grace your provision in your protection through them so Lord we we lift this family up to you father we pray that that that you would bless them and that you would be glorified in their lives and in their home in the name of Jesus you hey guys thanks for watching just a couple more
