hello my name is Darren Thomas and I am the director of educational research techniques in this particular video we're going to learn how to make a simple calculated question which again can be used in the quizzes so our objective is very clear we're just going to make a simple calculated question so let's go ahead and get started if you look off to the right-hand side if you're using the the default theme in Moodle you'll see a place called question Bank you click there it takes you to this page and then the next thing you do is you need to click create a new question so as you can see I click here and the simple calculated question is are practically this simple what they call it is right at the third from the top now they calculate a simple question is a simple version of the calculated question if you've seen the video on the calculator question you make wild cards and Moodle places values inside the wild cards and this allows for an infinite number of possibilities within the wild the actual question the calculated simple is the same thing but with a simpler format is much more user-friendly particularly for those of us who are new to Moodle and who maybe don't have a strong statistical background and a familiarity with like you know how computers work and think having experienced the calculator simple question I would really recommend that much more for people who are new to making quizzes on Moodle so we're going to ED and click Add here and it takes us here now to give you an overview of this page you know we have a question name at the top the actual question goes here in the question text you can provide feedback here the value how many points the question is worth this is Frank here answers is where we put our actual formula to get the answer you can have more than one formula and more than one potential answer if you really make questions that are that complicated but I recommend you know one answer per question unit unit handling units we're not really going to deal with but you can specify that the answer must have a unit value such as kilowatts or kilograms or pounds if you so desire and Moodle can multiply that our converting say for example from centimeters to meters etc after that we have the the multiple try feature which again if the student gets it wrong and has to try again they can do it again but it's like a penalty for their final score on it and then I need here we have fine wildcraft which will make more sense when we actually make our question so why don't we go back up here to the top and make our question so we're going to call this money move okay shin okay so here we go speed earns per hour whoops I need to put the curly braces in here the curly braces the game represents our wild car which takes a different value for the question per our keywords okay here's our question Steve earns something dollars per hour he works a certain amount of hours hours how much money just be earned so to figure this out we have to put the answer in here so as you know from taking basic math it's dollars multiplied by hours and that's how you get the answer so we got dollars here this is our first wild card and we have hours here this is our second wild card again as I've already explained when Moodle generates the question the question will stay the same but the values inside the curly braces which Moodle calls wild cards will change so two students will have the same question but different dollar amounts and different hours in their actual question so now in terms of the grade this is 100% because this is the only answer the tolerance as you should be to learn from the calculator question tells you how often to the convenience still get full credit so the student can be you know off by a penny here which is kind of just the default value at point zero one the answer display must have two decimal points as you can see right there and you can also provide specific feedback for if they get this answer right now next we need to tell little to find the wild cards we cannot proceed until we do that so we tell Moodle find the wild cards and so then it makes ins go back up to the top and then we need to go ahead and move down here so now you see we have a thing called log our parameters to generate values for our dollar amount we're going to have Steve make anywhere from 1 to $50 an hour you know sometimes you ki that's pretty good and we're going to have this with two decimal places for hours normally hours is the whole number so we're going to have no decimal places of course I know that I'm sure there's exceptions to that but in general we're going to just keep it simple but because I had no decimal places I have to make sure that there's a fairly large range of values otherwise I'll get an error message this is just for my practical experience so we're going to hang up to 500 hours that he can work and again if we get an error message we may have to adjust this and so now we're going to have little generate 10 different questions it's the same question remember but each question will have different values inside the dollar wild car and also inside the our wild car never going to display them as well and so when we've done this we want to click on generate here make sure everything is okay then display here and then you can see the wild card values right here everything looks okay this will make more sense in a second and so now we're going to click Save and continue editing all right everything's okay so if you want to look at the questions you click preview so you click here it's waiting at the bottom and so here's our first example Steve earns 36 dollars 92 cents per hour he works 114 hours how much money did he earn this is just one example here's another one Steve rs40 3.42 cents per hour he works 262 hours I went to the earth again every time you press refresh you'll get a different value this time he made 26 49 and he worked 186 hours so it just goes on and on and on forever that's the beautiful thing so after you set up the actual you generate the values which we already did and you set the display if you want to see them you don't have the option at the bottom called preview which allows you to look at it and so when you're happy and everything looks okay okay you can check a few things if you want to save a new question you can do so here I normally don't do that and also it will tell you who created it and who last stated if you so if you still need this information and also the wild card values or star set right here so as you can see right now the set is 10 that means there's 10 different potential questions that will have a different value here and but for one of the examples right here is 44 over 24 times 63 and it gives you the answer and even gives you how off they can be really really beautiful so when you're happy you click Save Changes and can and then oh you sorry you want to click Save Changes here not the other one so click Save Changes right here and it will take you back to the home screen and this is our newest question money multiplication so also if you if you notice close at the beginning of the video this little number here in parentheses was 2 because we only had two questions created now we have three because we just added the money multiplication question so there you have it this is how you make a calculated simple question assign Moodle this type of a question of course can be used when you when you make quizzes to help your students to learn it's a simpler format or a simpler way of making a calculated a little bit stripped down if you notice from this video compared to the simple calculated question we never had to deal with synchronization or sending up a data set or any of those other multiple options and features that Moodle users love to add to you know Moodle to make it difficult to understanding use so we hope that this video was use for you
