hello Colorado truckers and thank you for everything you do my name is Steve and on behalf of the Colorado Department of Revenue it is my pleasure to walk you through this video introduction to the benefits of the International fuel tax agreement or IFTA the question is why IFTA well let's go ahead and find out here's what we'll cover in this video what exactly is the International fuel tax agreement or IFTA the purpose of IFTA does if to apply to you why IFTA the IFTA application process how to receive IFTA news and updates by email and tools and resources if you want or need to learn more so what is if done IFTA is an agreement between member jurisdictions to cooperatively administer motor fuel use tax within the 48 contiguous states of the United States and ten Canadian provinces let's take a look at the purpose of IFTA the purpose of IFTA is to simplify the reporting of motor fuel use taxes IFTA is not an additional tax because large commercial vehicles can travel through multiple states without stopping for fuel a motor carrier may travel through a state not purchase any fuel and therefore not pay that state for the use of their roads if the simply redistributes the tax to the state where the fuel was actually used instead of where it was purchased so each jurisdiction has the funds necessary to maintain roads for interstate commerce now let's look to see if IFTA applies to you you're required to obtain an IFTA license if Colorado is your base state or jurisdiction and you operate a qualified vehicle than two or more M states or jurisdictions not sure if Colorado is your base state or jurisdiction or if your vehicle qualifies for IFTA purposes don't worry we've got you covered let's examine those requirements now Colorado is your base state jurisdiction if your business is located in Colorado the operational control and operational records are maintained at a Colorado location and the qualified motor vehicles will travel in Colorado regularly and you're qualified motor vehicles are registered in Colorado if to qualified motor vehicles are used designed or maintained for the transportation of persons or property have two axles in a gross vehicle weight or GVW or registered GVW exceeding 26,000 pounds have three or more axles regardless of weight or are used in combination when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds GVWR registered GVW lastly if to qualified motor vehicles do not include recreational vehicles the question is why IFTA what are the benefits and what's in it for you if to makes it so much easier to be in remain tax compliant if this simplifies the process of paying fuel taxes so you only pay what you owe and can spend more time on the road owning money and less time worrying about taxes only one tax return is filed each quarter with your base state or jurisdiction for fuel consumed in all Member States and jurisdictions and IFTA allows you to travel in all if to member jurisdictions if you determine that you need to register with IFTA because Colorado is your base state or jurisdiction and you operate a qualified motor vehicle and two or more member states or jurisdictions it's very simple to apply here's how to begin the application process simply go to Colorado gov forward slash tax /if 'te under international fuel tax agreement click on license
