hi I'm Bruce dealer from effect want to talk to you a little bit about a company called Heartland now they're in the news right now because hackers were able to steal millions of credit card numbers and all the information they need in order to get fraudulent credit cards into to commit crime now this company Heartland processes credit cards over 250,000 different companies out there all over North America so more than likely they're doing business in all 50 states now how this has happened is believed that about early May of last year hackers were able to get malware onto onto heartland's computers that network which in turn intercepted the credit cards are being processed the little magnetic strip on the back yer credit card contains all the information that a bad guy would need in order to generate another card however Heartland didn't even notice as such an event occurred until late last fall and then they waited till the inauguration of President Obama to make the announcement that yep we got hacked now this thing is probably going to make what happened at TJ maxx look really really small but what's more disturbing about this is this Heartland is only willing to do the bare minimum to make things right in other words not all states require that the victims or potential victims of this kind of theft have to be notified there's about 30 states right now says that you have to do that but the laws are pending on more and the president of ireland's saying well we're going to do what the law requires us to do which is not the right thing to do the right thing to do of course is notify everybody whose credit card may have been compromised that they're going to make sure that you know things like credit monitoring are put into place and and take care of any expenses they made in the event that because of this this invasion if you will this is hack of their systems with cost of financial difficulties but they're not going to do that see they just want to do the bare minimum know where it gets really interesting as I said the hackers introduced this tin to Heartland about the earlies last May and they didn't even know about it or discuss even do anything about it until late last fall now robert baldwin is president of Harlan and the chief financial officer and they talk to the media and they say well it's too early to guess how many people and comparisons to DJ Max is premature and it's not fair but data security analysts disagree and you know they're saying that well you know that's not going so the case we think is going to be losses in at least a half a billion or more dollars now ball one goes on to say that they will notify the victims in the states where data lost disclosure laws were in place that's about 30 states right now folks so based on his works it will appear that he is only willing to do the bare minimum that's required by law this company so makes you really wonder what's going on there dan Clements and he is president was called card cops told the USA Today that Harlan's actions stink of denial it's embarrassing and nasty when hackers breached major financial institutions and pillage and it definitely damages the company's reputation but at the sutt company isn't willing to accept responsibility and to take action to support his customers it deserves part of the blame I think they deserve a lot of the fun how on earth would a company if you look at out the regulations in the rule the Visa MasterCard American Express put together for what's called the payment card data in the payment payment card industry data security standard it's very tops of the standards it would seem to me on the surface that Heartland may not have been following that and look that's an important thing we're talking about at the very minimum a big inconvenience for people and that's the worst major financial loss of time of money of reputation all for just instantly visiting one of your favorite restaurants or making a credit card charge somewhere it's time to really put the pressure on Washington to make sure those people we trust with our information is held to a higher standard and not only say here are the rules but make sure these rules are getting in force listen I'm Bruce Taylor your frugal tech want to make you aware of this heck you might be a potential victim right now and not even know it all as always I'd be interested in your comments if you like this video make sure to rate it or don't like it whatever give us a rating and like a look at subscribing to our YouTube YouTube channel also be sure to visit us at our website frugal this fru GL brothers calm have a good one will talk you later you
