hi and welcome back to musicians edition today we're going to learn about cut time are you ready let's go all right so we're talking time signatures today so far we've learned what 4 4 3 4 and 2 4 are but now we're going to go over cut time cut time can have two different symbols it can look like this with the c with the line down it or it can look like this two over two now when we remember what our top line is this is how many beats are in the measure so it's going to be two beats in the measure now remember our bottom number is which note gets the beat now this is where things are going to change so if we have 2 which note value is 2 it's usually the half note so that means in cut time or 2 two the half note now gets the beat so how does that change the rest of our music that means the whole note it now is equal to it can only equal two because there's only two beats in our measure and then when we have a half note that is equal one so let's listen to some examples and kind of hear and see how they work these are all pretty simple samples so we're gonna just listen to the whole notes and how they're only worth two beats you see how it's different it's one two one two one two it's no longer four now let's take a listen to what the half note sounds like [Music] so as you can see the half note has the beat it's worth one now i know it's kind of confusing and it can be kind of confusing when you're playing it too you really have to pay attention to your time signatures especially when the bottom value changes all right let's listen to what the quarter note sounds like in 2 2 or cut time you see how it sounds like the eighth note it's faster everything is in half now okay let's listen to the eighth note now now that one's really fast it's just like our 16th notes so this is going to feel faster and we're gonna have to really pay attention but it's not impossible for us to do it's just one of those things we have to practice and work on especially because we've only worked in four now we're gonna work in two so this is just something we'll pay attention to and just like everything else the more you do it the more you get used to it let's just listen to a few couple other examples with it kind of mixed in [Music] you see how it feels different when we're just looking at the music but to the listener they'd never really know well that's what we have for our tutu and cut time time signatures if you have any questions...
