aloha friends welcome back to my channel how is everyone doing how is homeschool going for you i know for a lot of you who just started with a becca it's not going to be an easy start it's going to be a little rocky but i just wanted to encourage you press on take it one day at a time one week at a time one progress report at a time and by the end of the year you'll be glad you did remember what's the most important thing and why you decided to homeschool remember that the privilege that we have as mothers who stay at home and homeschool their children is that we get to train them to be useful in this life we get to mold their character not only for this life but for eternity and so whatever difficult time you're having with your home school bring it to the lord first second try to find some help find a support group maybe your friend is also homeschooling and you can get together with them and talk through difficult things or you can join one of these facebook groups like rebecca homeschool moms and find some answers to your questions there but whatever you do do not lose sight of the most important thing is that you get to mold the lives of your children so i hope you're encouraged i hope you will press on and i hope that you will be successful and by the way no matter how much you think it is hard with a becca think about trying to homeschool without where you have to find all the sources yourself find all the curriculums put them all together do your own lesson plans for every day to me personally that is a lot harder and i know some people do it and i admire those people it's wonderful but for a lot of us um correct me if i'm wrong a becca is a godsend especially if you have multiple children in your homeschooling and maybe you're even working from home a becca has definitely been a blessing so i know that as soon as you figure everything out you will enjoy rebecca so much and with that said today we're going to be talking about progress reports grading papers how to grade them how to send them to a becca what to expect and just some little tips that i've learned in my few years with rebecca about how to grade papers and what they're looking for so without the further ado let's go ahead and start okay so grading papers and preparing a progress report is very easy when you know what you're doing so for those of you who are new i will kind of walk you through it personally we just finished our first 30 lessons so it's time for us to fill out our progress report now the progress reports you will find at the very back of your video manual you have your first grade progress report and this is a first grading period for lessons 1-30 here they want you to put all of the personal information of your child such as name address also your phone and date they want you to enter the account number and the student id number which you can find on their website where you signed up your child for the school if you have a hard time finding these you can always wait and they will send you an email which will remind you that the first greeting period is coming up and in that email they will have your account id and student id as well once you entered all of the information above you have to enter all of the grades it's very simple they tell you which lesson which test you just enter the grade and at the very end here you must sign as a home teacher that your student has watched all of the videos that are covered by this progress report now this first page you will be sending to a becca directly and the second page is the home teacher's copy so this one you'll be keeping for yourself now they don't have it here on the first grading period but starting with the second grading period for the first grade they will have tests for reading and so two of the lessons or two of the tests for reading needs to be done with a becca and i'll explain how to do that in just a minute and the third one you need to grade yourself so you're grading for accuracy expression and comprehension and they kind of give you on this helpful key how to grade now for these oral reading tests you will need to call a becca so what you need to do is to call a becca reading line and everything is automated it's super easy and in a minute i'll show you a video of how we did it with sky this year just to give you an idea and basically you call they ask you for id or rather they tell you if this is the id you press pound and then they ask you um which lesson you're reading for and which of the groups you're reading for and then they ring a chime and your child can start reading and then when the chime goes off again that's when you stop as a child your child will need to read two minutes of the assigned selection at the end another child is found and the call will end we will see i guess chuckled ella but she was still worried what if she didn't make any friends at school the children's pastor mr cole interrupted ella's thoughts as he walked up to the front allah liked listening to mr cole he was a tall man with bright red hair jesus is wanting to take away our worries well his mom giggled along with her and listened carefully soon they were back okay good job thank you for calling me academy high five now if you're new to rebecca like you just started and you don't really know what's going on with these reading groups just quick explanation the three groups are basically based on how well your child reads so if you think your child reads very well you can put him in giraffes if you think they're reading okay put them in monkeys and if you think they're struggling put them in elephants and so all of these different groups are going at different pace and so all you have to do now once you're done is put a check mark according to the group that your child is reading in okay now that we overviewed the progress report and how it's done let's go ahead and get the tests and grade them so for caden who is in first grade i kept all of the tests in the book so that way when it's time for me to grade everything i just come and rip it out of the book and that way it's not getting lost and sometimes a becca's books have a hard time ripping properly sometimes you will need to use scissors for this okay so some of the tests i have graded already i pretty much you know was there with him when he did it so i just graded it right away and so here we have written grade a plus and oral grade a plus so we'll just go ahead and enter it into the progress report and one tip i would give you is do everything on the home teacher's copy in case you make mistakes and then you can copy everything into the actual progress report that you're sending and so i'm going to go over all the papers and write the grades here by the way i wanted to point something out here is that it is helpful for a becca if you write not only a letter grade but also a number grade like a plus 100 percent or sometimes it could be a 98 or 96 percent and that helps them with averaging your child's grades and to know how to grade these you go ahead and go at the very beginning of the book where they have the grading scale there's a six point scale and ten point scale and from what i understand a becca is using a six point scale so that is what you will be using to grade your child's papers let's see this one this one now do you see how here he made couple of mistakes so you're wondering how do i grade that you get the key open it on the same page and after each assignment it shows you how many points to subtract a word or a sound let's say he made a mistake on one of the sounds so that would be minus 2 and of course 100 minus 2 is 98. 98 here shows as a so you would write a and then you would write 98 next to it so like i said everything is very easy very simple to grade by the way on letter and sounds tests it's my understanding that they don't have to write their sounds and their words or even letters in cursive because they're not testing them here for writing they're testing them for knowing phonics so you don't have to expect your child to write everything in cursive just to make things easier now writing is not as easy to grade but i'll give you some suggestions anyways so first of all in the video manual at the very back there are some samples of children's writing or children's tests and they give you different examples for different grades for example this one is an a and so you can see what it should look like for a what it should look like for b and then c so this should definitely give you an idea of how to grade your writing papers you should know that rebecca is very strict on grading so you might think your child is doing you know a plus job but they'll probably give him an a minus or even a b plus because they always say there's room for improvement when you're learning how to write so another little um idea or a little tip i would give you is that if you don't know exactly how to grade it try to grade it anyway as best as you can and send it out and a becca will actually grade it for you again if they disagree with your grade that happened to us couple of times last year i think which was very helpful so just don't be afraid if you did something wrong send it out anyway and they will grade it for you and they will actually send you that paper back to show you um as an example how you should be grading in the future but usually they don't send any grading papers back only when they're trying to show you something like if they have corrected the paper does that make sense i hope so now another thing i wanted to mention is averaging grades there's so much information in these books that sometimes it just gets confusing but the point is it's my understanding that you don't need to average the grades of your children um unless you are not accredited and you're keeping grades for yourself um then i guess you have to do that but if you are accredited with a becca all you have to do is fill in the progress report with all of the information that they are asking you for make sure to call the rebecca reading line get everything recorded there and then send it all off and in a couple of weeks you should receive a report card in the mail and that will have all of your child's averages for that grading period so basically they'll take all of the grades that you provided them with or all of the tests and the grades you provided them with and they're going to average it for you put it all on paper for you and send it to you so you can put it in your file and file it away and by the way they have that becca reading line number right here and if you somehow can't find it i can put it up right here for you so you'll be able to call in and you don't have to speak to a person if you don't want to it's all automated and here is the envelope i was talking about they already have their address on it you just have to put your address in it and send it off now few things about sending the progress report if you have more than one child like me who are studying with a becca you can put all of their progress reports within the same envelope so basically send it all off together they all have different id numbers so they'll figure it all out there like i mentioned before they do a becca does email you a couple of weeks before you need to send in the progress report just to remind you that this is the time for you to send the progress report and then they give you additional time um in case you are a little bit late like up to one month i think and something interesting that i've learned this year though is that if you are late if you're finally late like after they reminded you and after the date that they told you you have to submit it by if you're still late and you still haven't sent your progress reports you will apparently have to pay a 20 late fee now this is something new because we definitely have been late before and i've been with rebecca for three years now and we've never had to pay to my knowledge i've never seen us pay twenty dollars but apparently now you have to pay the late fee so but don't worry because they give you plenty of time so if you are doing a becca five times a week every week and then take off for holidays and things like that then you should be on schedule if you started on your actual starting date another thing there was something else i was going to mention sometimes your progress report will get lost in the mail that's like the worst thing that could happen to you because you just sent off all the original tests and you have nothing to send rebecca again so that happened to us once and rebecca was emailing us and calling us telling us where's the progress report and we said we sent it a long time ago and never arrived so what i ended up doing i think i ended up actually taking the test keys i scanned the tests with some of my computer magic i erased the actual answers and then printed it out as a test page for my child and then the child had to do all the tests over again you know it worked out they accepted it but it was a mess so to avoid this type of scenario what you can do is you can scan or copy all of the tests before you send them off to rebecca and then keep them filed away now i haven't done it yet but i think i'll have to start doing it because i cannot afford both of my children's tests lost in the mail and then trying to you know reproduce them again it's just a big mess now i'm sure i have forgotten something to mention about progress reports and
