hey what's up guys it's ria hey what's up guys it's owen today bsmd boosters is back with another video about how you can volunteer during coven so we know that some states are beginning to open but volunteering is still going to be a struggle for a lot of us but you're still going to need those volunteer hours for applying to college and national honor society so stay tuned for some volunteering opportunities that you can do from your [Music] home just because you're applying to a bsmd program does not mean that colleges will expect you to have strictly medically related volunteering activities such as hospital or hospice volunteering especially due to covid they can't they will be uh happy to see some non-medically related activities um that are extremely meaningful so stay tuned for some options for that the default in previous years has always been hospital volunteering or nursing volunteers let's be honest they're not going to allow you to take care or even view the sick and the old so what can you do so you know obviously many of you guys are very worried because of what happened previous years but bsnd programs will not compare you to what johnny did three years ago or what ria or i did last year they'll compare you against what you could have done before they do anything else so your college counselor will not do she only has 50 volunteering hours and she thinks she'd get it to this school she is rejected however this does not mean you should not volunteer over the summer definitely take the chance to give back to your community and get some volunteering hours today we're going to give you some medically and non-medically related volunteering opportunities and briefly explain them and all the links will be in the description box below first medically related activities and first you can guess it we had zuniverse which was also tremendously recommended by the princeton review so zuniverse is basically a database where you can find new projects to research and you can do genuine research by yourself using data science these research projects include planetary research biological research and also environmental research next we have the united nations volunteer program which is an amazing program that's very large that will allow you to participate in various campaigns and activities specifically ones that are coping related and there's even opportunities to translate and proofread surveys that will be sent out to the public so it's a great opportunity to show your commitment to health care as well as your language skills next we have words of things my personal favorite here you can show that you're really in tune with the medical opportunities around you you could send nice thank you notes to the doctors nurses and hospital staff and local hospitals to really thank them for what they've done for covid i think it's very meaningful because it really shows you're in tune with today's problems and shows your compassion next we have the international humanity foundation which is a non-profit organization that helps impoverished children get education in state homes in developing countries such as thailand in indonesia and kenya you can simply apply to be a mentor to these younger children and teach them basic skills draw with them and just be a role model for them next we have a.m covet this is created coincidentally by a bunch of high school students to deal with coven 19 while targeting to help out worldwide communities that are seeking for help and donations next we have love for the elderly which is an amazing program where you can write letters or donate to the elderly community who are affected by kovid and um there are some age restrictions so make sure you check that out but you just have to apply to be an ambassador next we have the red cross something you guys must have all heard about here you can work on campaigns work on events you can do fundraising and all just to mitigate covet relief there are some age restrictions as well just watch them out when you apply next is my personal favorite it's called dosomething.org and it's a place to read and learn about controversial issues that surround our world right now as well as express your voice and your opinions about them to a large audience some of the categories include mental health world hunger women's health and it's a great platform for activism during quarantine finally we have learning ally here you can support struggling students to be engaged and empowering leaders despite their learning disabilities it would give you the opportunity to work with a diverse amount of students and truly show your compassion and empathy and ability to relate with others now we'll introduce some non-medically related volunteer options first we have the anti-slavery boston library in which you can volunteer to become a transcriber for handwritten documents and [Music] turn them from handwritten to text and there's a great problem with losing historical documents since they're not transcribed so you can volunteer to do that it's a great opportunity next we have catchfire which basically the non-medical equipment of zuniverse here you can link yourself up with utilizing your skills to help other people and work on projects for example a very techy person you could help someone set up their computer or work on our new website for their public schools next we have the gutenberg project which helps researchers get more access to um academic texts that are in books so basically there's a problem where a lot of important research articles are only found in books so you can help transcribe them onto online platforms and help make it more accessible to academic researchers next you can volunteer for translators without porters so there are multiple things you can do here number one to be a transitor between different communities and of course you you'd be required to speak two or more languages but you know if you can't translate you could be a project manager or project designer next we have counselor crisis for crisis text line here you must be over 18. so most high school students will not be able to do this and as a volunteer you can offer free advice for those in america that need help and are in a crisis next we have lifelong ladders which is a student-led organization that allows people to create online learning resources for students in underprivileged neighborhoods and communities and it allows them to get greater education and you can do that by simply just looking on their website lastly we have team busy here you can meet mentor children you can help them with their homework help them with their drawings and you can have a real bond with a child which can last more than just a quick summer and finally here are just some few ideas if you don't want to get involved in a big organization but still want to help out your community specifically first you can call your local doctor's office and see if they need help with anything whether that's medical supplies or they just need someone to answer phone calls that could be a great opportunity to show your commitment to health care during coven another thing you could do is ask your elderly neighbors in your community if they need help with grocery shopping and they don't want to go out to crowded supermarkets as well as set up a program for those who can't leave their house because of self-isolation because of the coronavirus and see if you can set up a way to deliver necessities and supplies
