hello youtube welcome to my bookcase um it is a rainy cold miserable day as we go into fall here in chicago so i figured i would um talk about some petey whiskies um so i've got the idea here is is to compare two very very young um sort of artificially woody um young pity whiskeys for you from basically once from isla right one's from india and uh we'll see how they get they gone um so a little bit of background before we start the paul john uh from is an indian whiskey um many of you might already be familiar with um i'm root these are actually headquartered in the same place in in bangalore in southern india but whereas amrut actually keeps their distillery pretty close in the same sort to the same place uh the john distillers um have their main distillery way off to the northwest on the coast in goa which is also the namesake of the only genre of trans music that that means anything um uh so no age statement on this but it's it's young um it does come uh in a very nice box here which has a magnet and everything um i think it's a little too ornate uh for something like this but um you know hey it does let me keep my my pasta um in it after the fact so i'm just gonna slap these in there we go you know pretty close to a perfect fit and uh set that aside it also comes with a booklet which is useful mainly because it tells you that it's unchill filtered uh it doesn't say that anywhere else i don't know why um otherwise you know it's just deflating price um we'll get back to this in a minute but uh let's start with the uh the option that's actually from scotland first this is of course in the uh the northeast of of uh avila um uh by capacity actually the largest distillery on isla but i don't think they're they're producing as much as they're actually you know producing as much as khalid is now um most munahabins are unpeated as you know they've been producing peated batches since uh since i think the late 90s most of the ones i've i've had have been you can tell they're pita but it's just enough that you can tell put it that way it's like it's like a little it's like spring bank or ben romic or something uh this is apparently a new thing um um uh um which is a much more um repeated series this one um is from 2014 god help us um and uh was aged in a d char rechar cast now what the hell is that um this is the sort of thing that ralph ralphie likes to complain about i actually like these things um it's actually pretty traditional rum outside of jamaica at least um what they're doing is they're basically taking a cast which has been pretty depleted which has been used you know maybe three four times already and um uh they are stripping down the inside just ripping off some of the wood that's been you know depleted and uh then giving it a fresh char so that you're exposing fresh wood and then you know charring it up and then they're then they're putting the spirit in sometimes they'll actually deter it again to kind of get some of the some of the fresh jar off to make it not so obnoxious but they haven't done that here um this is a four year old whiskey that they sort of use that process to make artificially woody and it's a way of getting a ton of wood into a whiskey without getting those sort of really nasty green notes you sometimes get from virgin oak i've talked about those in other videos um uh and i'll provide all the information about this uh below i think this is a bini's bottling uh from uh signatory um signatory one of the big um uh independent bottlers um one of my favorites actually um i think this is out of stock but they just they're they're gonna bring in tons of these so um this is sort of you know expect um whatever i say for this expect it will apply to future versions of this okay um okay uh pete and oak very direct um very modern actually uh would be the word um it's repeat and ash and tons of vanilla ice cream um it's just it what this so with which with buna hobbins um including the pdr batches they made before like the ones from the 90s i often get a very sort of leafy herbal note um which is one of the the distinguishing characteristics of the distillery for me and i'm not getting that here this is um in many ways this reminds me of of something like the laphroaig quarter cask um in the sense that it's it's keeping the peat the the really pd signature from the um from the distillate but at the same time it's it's sort of fudging and cutting out some of the you know the the nooks and crannies and details uh that come along with the peat and the rest of the distillate this just comes off like kind of an anonymous oaky peat bomb which is nice though if you like the kind of thing ash vanilla wood spice coconut coconut pie really um just kind of desserty stuff uh something some kind of like old fruit liqueur thing in there like um i want to say maraschino but it's not it doesn't seem quite right it's it's but something like that um and a little bit of wet dog in there which is sort of giving it a little bit of character uh and i like i like the wet dog and that's it it's very direct it's very simple but it's also just smells delicious so let's give this swirl again kind of the same thing peat so isle of peat so it's not not farming peat this is a very clean seaside peat um you know it's it's peat and sort of brine and very clean rather than there's no there's no barnyardy stuff going on here um coconut uh shavings vanilla again um a little fresh ginger not too much um hints of ash one more time tea um let's go english breakfast tea like just strong brewed breakfast tea um yeah wood ash wood char black pepper um actually reminds me a lot of of ardmore sort of that uh very you know desserty kind of quality that artmore can take on a lot of the time so it's not as sort of mainlandy i'm working at a little farmy uh at some times this this is not that this is you know except for the wet dog element this is very clean um okay so it's i mean so this is it's kind of you know peat porn if i can put it that way in the sense that it's not it's kind of it's kind of exactly what you expect if i can put it away it's it's you know this is what you if you went to the home depot and you ordered you know uh 750 milliliters of peated whiskey without specifying specifying this this feels like kind of what you would get it's it's it's a little bit anonymous it's meeting your expectations it's delicious but there's also kind of it's also not flawed in any way but uh that's that's nice but there's nothing here that sort of says you know i am i'm boon haben i am you know i have these gigantic skills stills behind me and so forth um so it's a little bit sanitized it's very modern um and let's go to the uh the paul john as a comparison so this is uh paul john makes a whole bunch of of different uh uh indian single malts um this is the peated select cask this particular lot is uh august uh 16 2016. um batch number three at 55.5 percent alcohol oh i never told you on this one this one is 60.4 so um you know five percent stronger um now you might think um you know by comparison if this guy is a softy and this is from real isla what's the uh you know the copycat from how soft is the coffee cat from india going to be this is this is going to be you know just you know a walk in the park right and then it rips your head off and beats you to death with it this is just jesus actually let me um add some water to the bunahaven while i try to wrap my head around what's what's happening in this class so i was honestly expecting something you know a little bit middle of the road from this hang on let me check [Music] because amber has a has repeated version too and it's a little bit anonymous it's a little bit more like this this is not that this is um jesus it's it's brutal um it's like a combination of again seaside peat so very clean you know peat and seashore stuff but then there's this tropical fruit element which is just like massive it's it's it's it's actually holding up with the peas so it's on the one hand you know and the peat is actually very laphroaigi it's very medicinal so you're getting peat like old bandages like seaside air some like camp like old campfire smoke so throw some old bandages and medical waste on your on your campfire that's kind of what's going on here um but then you know right alongside that and just as aggressive is like orange peel and tangerine and like peated mango and and nectarine and we're really more like like dried mango um if you've ever had that um like whole foods or whatever was like that um and but then there's like this the wood is providing a little bit of a dessert noti note again like like kind of you know um cookies something like that so it's really the effect is like you know take some s'mores um you know freshly made campfire s'mores except heated and then like pour grapefruit juice all over them it's really extreme um it's not a very neither this is very pd but both these seem to be like at kind of ardmore levels of pete um more graham cracker kind of ashy there's kind of a called a money maker i don't think they make them anymore but they were they were made in connecticut really cheap just these ugly black things and something about this is is reminding me of of those you know how those smell when they were smoking was sort of very um uh light and very dirty at the same time um a little bit of like bubble gum like like double bubble you remember those things um and just topsoil just straight up you know out of the bag from lowe's or whatever topsoil just completely bonkers it's it's one of the most sort of off the rails difficult noses i i've tried to wrap my head around in a long long time um this is tricky stuff okay on the palette um here we go it's it's fascinating but i mean you're good at really getting sort of laphroaig peat and like aggressive bitter sour tropical tropical fruit so and but then there's the oak there's like like if you could candy oak this is kind of what it would be doing um seaside peat it's actually a little bit farmy too that now that the farming element comes through you're really getting feeling like a like a farm dirt and like like a pig pooped in the corner that kind of thing um hospital waste containers um just throw some of those in your mouth maybe dig the needles out first um peated orange peated peaches peated pears guava just a you know fill in your your list of tropical fruits and they're all they're all kind of here um campfire ash cigar ash again that money maker note um breakfast tea again but it's more like like just chewing on the leaves directly this time um there's a lot going on in here if you haven't figured it out i even have like a lagavulinish kind of coal smoke sort of element going on obviously black black pepper um something that reminds me of like really good old cognac um that kind of heavy you know uh amazon wood thing going i don't know what the what woods they're using in this but i i would be shocked that they were just using ex bourbon casks um and uh yeah to finish off the list a little bit of manuka honey um this is difficult um i i like it a lot because it is difficult but you know with the exception of people who just find laphroaig and stuff too boring and easy and straightforward i don't know if a lot of people are going to prefer this over this we'll go back to this in a second let me add some water um um okay it's it's got a bit of water now it's had a minute to rest so what do we got um it doesn't change that much um the young whiskeys tend not to if i'm if i'm totally honest um it does sweeten up a little bit um more yeah kind of more vanilla um a little bit a little bit more of a kind of coconut essence thing um interesting the the the the wet dog notice almost become like a calvados note like a kind of um you know that's sort of soapy uh funky almost almost medicinal but not quite note that that calvados can can sometimes do um there's a little just a little sprig of mint in there just to remind you that this is abuna haben that's kind of the only hint that i would get in here that this is this is really bunny and the palette kind of the same as before very driven by oaky sweetness vanilla ash and lots and lots of peat just very straightforward if i'm honest um pete porn um no one's gonna object to this no one's gonna be surprised to this by this except for you know maybe the the nerds who just want you know always see to be you know 1973 bro or something like that um but it's also not challenging in any way i mean that's what is pornography is that which was which does not challenge expectations you they are all being fulfilled here and that's great um i'm enjoying this i would give this uh oh let's give this an 86 plus um it's a very successful experiment this this tastes like the future honestly this tastes like everyone's everyone's going to be headed in this direction because it's young and it's delicious um it's safe um it's not going to disappoint and uh hey you're doing that use it using barrels that you know you already have on hand and you're just recharging and and reusing them um so i'd be shocked if this is not sort of the norm um for ila kind of going on out um a6 i like it um you know part of my part of my soul hurts to like it this much but um you know it is what it is back to the paul john this this monster um yeah okay um this develops a lot more there's a kind of like a fruit candy like like an old-timey fruit candy thing coming through now a little bit sweeter um pete's still still definitely in there um i think this might actually be a hair but peter than this guy um it's actually there's there's some some grainy notes coming through now um like a little bit of pear a little bit of cream of wheat um it's like like a hey but like like candied hay if you could do that um just still totally totally wild i don't even have a point of reference from scotland if maybe you something about this makes me think of like like a peated lowlander in a way it's like if you combine repeated lowlander with like a pina to mutton or something like that you might be close but this is so far off the map um on the palette just super complex um well i mean it's still young all the complexity is coming not all a lot of the complexity is coming from the distillate um just yeah more peppery um a little bit sweeter but very dry um have i mentioned this this guy is is is i mean it's not sweet but it's kind of off dry-ish this is quite dry um peppery uh a little more a little more of a kind of sea water iodine note coming through in the palette now tropical fruit is still there like still peated orange pita tangerine um a sort of ashy cigar thing coming through um and a little bit of that sort of peated grap candied hay thing that i that i mentioned on the nose in the background yeah this is almost low lander-ish in the way it kind of delivers its its flavor it's it's actually once especially once you've added water it actually comes across as quite i wouldn't say light but um you know more delicate thing than you would think it's fascinating stuff um this is much more well enough with this i mean the the problem with this with this bottle right is um it's it's so complicated and so interesting but it's also just a ton of hard work this is so austere and so serious i mean watch this um okay a mushroom walks into a party the host asks what are you doing here and the mush and the mushroom replies well i'm a fun guy see that not even a smile right i mean that's that's kind of the problem here it's just it's just a little bit too difficult a little too humorless i'm still gonna get i'm gonna give it the same score this is an 86 plus there's no there's no off notes or anything in this it's very well constructed it's just i'm have and there's there's more here in lots of ways but i'm having to work so much harder to get to it yeah same score i want to root for this guy but i feel like most people are going to be buying this guy so um 86 plus to both of them um and uh i don't know it's um this is a weird a weird uh review pair um yeah no uh no victory for either side and um with that i will send you on your way thanks for watching and cheers
