[Music] hello and welcome to the fourth video in the test careers clinic series International Edition I'm going to had a hand and I'm here to walk you through all your teaching career related questions but a little bit of help from teachers and school leaders who we've got on hand to share their wisdom and experience with us today's video is going to be about applying for teaching jobs whether you're in an international school or a UK school some things stay the same you're still hunting up those aesthetic mistakes and typos and you're always going to be panicking that you've attached your application form and not recipe for a vegetable bake so our top two tips when it comes to applying for jobs from speaking to experts and shortlist is the feedback we get is that people just don't sell themselves enough now it's not the time to be humble if you let the T say so the project was your idea now is the time to announce it you need to forget about modesty at this point because what matters is painted an honest picture of what you would like were you and being like as an employee now we're going to hear from a teacher who is going to share some top tips when they leave their application hi my name is Liz Koch and I'm the head of secondary here at tenbi schools Penang in Malaysia for my experiences and what I wanted as an expat coming on to the International circuit this time I was looking for high quality of living and I was looking for sunshine I was looking for travel opportunities and I was also looking for within the school itself established systems and a good reputation what I didn't want to do was have to come to a new country and a new school and have to deal with craziness both at work but also in my lifestyle too it definitely depends on what your motivator is if it's the money then the established international schools tend to pay very generously in the Middle East but then the cost of living are a lot higher as well here in Southeast Asia there are countries that pay very well again the costs of living tend to be higher if you want to have a an english-speaking country then obviously Malaysia Singapore would be appealing to you we've also got the opportunities to work in less established international school scene systems such as the up-and-coming schools in Myanmar or Cambodia for example so it really does depend on what your motivator is if you are after a specific role I would suggest try and keep your options open as much as you feel comfortable in doing so there are significant shifts in international schools and in particular some of the larger ones but so positions do come up fairly regularly if you're going to step down a level from your current role then do you explore through your interview what subcontinent's might be available and to use your skillset effectively and make an impact on the school that you're in I would definitely recommend if you have visited the country before on travels a holiday or a business trip in a previous life than do it elaborate and tell the interviewer that this is the case often the leaders want to make sure that the place is suitable for the right candidate as well as the school is suitable for the right candidate so if you're familiar with it and you have come back to the opportunity of wanting to live there and relocate but that is a positive so we request their experiences through the application process and we certainly wouldn't discount somebody that doesn't have the national curriculum or IGCSE Cambridge or a little experiences we I've certainly worked with plenty of teachers that have learned to adapt and teach both the curriculums in different positions across the world we are looking for teachers who are willing to adapt we're looking for teachers who are reflective and what learn with new experiences and there's usually a lot of crossover in terms of the content from one curriculum to another so whether you're IB or a level whether you're from the UK national curriculum or whether it's the American version we would ask questions about resilience and adaptability we'd look at what new knowledge or skills that they would be able to bring to our team and to enhance the current offer that we have sometimes it's about the right fit personality wise for the school and for the new teacher and if they've got the experience of adapting before and working with other to others effectively then you've got to go with your instinct and give them a whirl so do your research make sure that you find out as much about the country in the place that you're going to be living in and calling your home as you do about the school itself it's got to be the right fit for you it's got to be the right fit for your family if you're taking your family - I found big differences between my two experiences here in Malaysia being in the kuala lumper into the in the city and here in penang on the island they've been fabulous and I've embraced both but they are very different [Music]
