hi everyone it's me again today we're gonna look at how you put together a double page spread so your coursework as it has been with previous briefs is to make a front cover for a magazine and also a double page spread you might not know what a double page header looks like and what you can see here is this is a mock double page spread I put together it's not finished it's not perfect it needs tone around with and as you can see I haven't actually like written the text yet I'll just kind of showing you some mock text but here's when I produce I produced this one for a men's lifestyle magazine that's geared towards men who are more into like technology gadgets and the digital world on before before I go ahead as well double page spread what it is it's basically like imagine you open a magazine it's an article that spreads over two pages so it's a three in size so if you imagine this kind of blown up to a three and it has like a fold or staples down the middle so there you go you've got my example um so it's important you think about right what what can i feature what can my magazine feature as a double page spread what's going to capture the interest of my target audience or page spread needs to link directly to a cover line you've put in your cover and so I would have needed to this one put a cover line on my cover so let's use KO tournament basically and so just to like walk you through like what I've actually done here what this actually is so I came up with and I thought my audience more kind of technological man your man art ins gaming so I thought let's do a double page spread feature on like a review of a new video game that's been released a new release how did I come up with this idea well I looked at other double-page spreads online like gaming double-page spreads and I found that they tended to include one of the types of articles that they very regularly include it was kind of review based so reviewing a new game so I thought right as you know everything about your coursework has to be original so I had to invent my own video game basically I couldn't use clod I couldn't use GTA whatever I had to come up with my own game so I came up with Kato tournament knockout tournament it's like meant to be like a fighting game a bit like Tekken if ever if you've ever played that but like more like much like martial arts mixed martial arts and I thought right that'll do is a concept from a game and I thought it could be like a VR reality game so like you put your headset on and everything and you like turn into one of the fighters within the game that was the concept I had so had an idea for the article what could be about what like form it could take but it's a little bit harder um putting it together on on the page in a way that looks nice that looks visually appealing and you also have to take into account as with the front cover you had minimum requirements yet to have four curved lines at the master after have a strap line there are requirements for the double page spread as well that you need to work in to that so I'll walk you through these now just briefly so you on your double page spread you need to have a title so mine stair KO tournement you need to have something called a stand first so I'll just point out to you there a stunned first is kind of like an introduction to your article where you can outline what it's going to be about what it's focusing on so yeah an intro and it tends to be you'll notice bolder and in a bigger or different font to the rest of the article so that you can get quick brief overview of what the articles going to be about so I haven't added the text to that yet I'll do that in a future video and because there's more considerations to be made there but there you go that's where I think I'm gonna what that's where I've decided to place my stand first you then need to include something called a byline so you'll see there in the red of pop by mrs. Morton right so a byline is way say who the article by that's by me so put my name um what else you need to include at least 300 words of text so those three columns they're aware I intend to clued include my 300 words of text I haven't written it yet but I will do after a bit more research um and you'll notice when you've kind of go on Google Images and look at other double-page spreads you'll notice that they do tend to organize their texting columns it's just easier to read easier to follow and it looks neater and it breaks up the text a bit what else you need to include and something called pull quotes and pull quotes literally are when you take something that's said in your article something quite I capture in quite exciting and all that really like summarizes logical what it's all about and you literally pull it out of the text so by copy and pasting it so leave it in the text but copy it paste it and then make it bigger and brighter so it's going to catch the audience's attention so I've put jaw-dropping technology absolute GameChanger it makes the game sound really exciting so I thought they worked well as pull quotes and that's where I've chosen to place them you'll notice that I have page numbers so conventionally your page number goes in the bottom two corners or put 2324 see loads of people put one and two before but that's a bit of a silly idea because if you open a magazine you'll find it's not a double page spread straightaway it's like a contents page or an advert or whatever else say I'll just put two random numbers 23 24 you must include on your double page spread you need to include at least well one main image so one big image and then at least four additional images so I've got there some kind of in-game footage of people fighting I've also got an image of somebody like playing with VR technology to illustrate like how you play the game of all got a little image there um in the corner and the right-hand corner of a dude who I've decided he's like the official reviewer for the magazine of videogames so I just stuck his little picture in there with a little caption underneath saying who he is so that's the minimum requirements that must must be included on the double page spread but I took me a while to come up with this design to think the way that this could all fit together in a way that looks quite visually appealing the double page spread is so much harder than the front cover there are so many other elements to consider so I think first of all before you kind of get started and jump in there you need to do your research and you need to look at similar example for instance if you're going to a fashion magazine then you need to type in fashion magazine double page spread on Google Images pick two or three and really look at them make a little list what do they have in common fashion magazines for instance what types of articles do they include so do they include reviews do they all do they include interviews or do they include kind of top ten denim skirts this season or whatever so study the kinds of articles that get featured on door page spreads so I'll just give you an example here are the double page spread that I've labeled for the key features you'll find my audible page spreads feature all of these characteristics of each one of these have all of these features but just label the ones that you do see so you can see here with the image this is a double page spread this is a different type of double page spread this is a celebrity interview presumably from a music magazine and it features Nicki Minaj as you can see they're a three in size spread out across two pages there would be a line in the middle in real life with staples through it you'll find that quite often magazines will avoid anything crossed and over that line so keep it to two sides two pages but sometimes you'll have an image like a big image that spills over I think it's fine for an image to spill over a bit but it's not fine for text Bulova how undersea meant to read a text if it goes like over the staples it just wouldn't work so think about that carefully so yeah you've got your Mina measure of myth Nicki Minaj and you however will need to include I'll put three additional images there I mean for the headline the Gospel according to Nicki Minaj it's much bigger than everything else it stands out the stand first we introduced the article the byline where you talk about where you explain who the articles by a drop capital I forgot to mention that so a drop capital is when you take the first letter of the text and you make it way bigger and brighter and bolder magazines do that for some reason I think it kind of draws the eye to where the article starts so you need to include one of those as well that's a minimum requirement and you've got a pull quote so they take an literally pulled out a quote from the text copied it pasted it and made it bigger made it stand out by using color and different font styles and making it bigger in size subheadings to split up your article are very useful you page numbers um and I believe that's everything so remember I've set you the task before you get started to familiarize yourself with those features by finding two or three examples and labeling them as I have done here so that's that so as you can see here I've typed in gaming magazine double page spread and then it's come up with like I said like reviews of new games or like charts or interviews with game and developers and so that's how I got my inspiration from mine what my article was going to be about rather than just pluck it from thin air really like do your research look at similar examples start first by thinking about the images you're going to get on there because there's a minimum number of images you need to fit on there what are these images going to be off again we've got that complication if we can't go out and take images and ordinarily you would have to include like pictures that use found and taken yourself um but in this instance it's fine to take pictures from the internet I think I didn't want to take like an existing game character so I thought and I was also thinking if I was doing in this in real life like I can't take a picture of a person because they don't look like a video game character so what did was a download did and you could do this for fashion magazines you could do this for dance magazines whatever you guys are probably better than me at filters and playing around with images in that way that's these selfies and wherever so I don't know just um it's like that puts filters on stuff like the same way snapchat Instagram does um and I just found a picture on the Internet of a guy doing karate um and then I put it into this app and it's turned them into like a video game style so that's um one workaround if you were do in that type of magazine when it comes to it take a picture of you mate but then put them into this apps lips they look like a video game character or if you've won you know you're gonna take a picture of your friend put like a really nice snapchat or Instagram filter over the top of it to make them look like a supermodel because you know normally in magazines people are airbrushed so you can give that a go play with filters so and I picked my other images I just picked kind of in-game footage of people fighting but again I must reiterate when it comes down to it you will need to find sources pictures yourself take these pictures yourself you can't take them from the internet yes you've got a concept for what your article is going to be whether it's going to be a review and interview and tips and tricks advertising products a kind of a chart or a top turn of a certain type of product you've made your decision now and you you know what pictures are going to include so you know what five pictures are going to go in there on that you know it's going to be a main image and then your four additional ones you've got that all set out in your mind now you need to think about the layout it's really important for a double-page spread and it won't look kind of slick and realistic and convincing if you just kind of just shove everything on the page and this means me really carefully thought-out so I'll just show you now and so give them a quick sketch but this is how I and I might take you a couple of goes and you might want to keep referring back to other examples for ideas on how to lay out nicely and but this here is my version of kind of my sketch my mock-up for the layout of my double page spread so I thought first of all write a better mark the staple line in the middle so that like I don't have any text going over it or anything like that um I thought right that's where I place my headline you headlines important things first where is that going to go I thought I'll put stand first just by it that's quite normal to do that I've started to mark out where I'm going to put columns of text and images or drop capital in I've put my page number in I'll indicated where I'm going to put a pull quote and rest of the text another poor quote my main image okay I want add a main image my main image of that guy fighting forgive me for the stickman but you get the picture additional images with more info about the game and then in the corner I thought I could do an additional section it was like the official review of the game and it got 5 stars and then that's where I'm putting the last image of the little reviewer guy and you don't want like random blank space and you cover so I thought I'll fill in that gap there where the headline is were like a scope like a target like targeting some kind of links in the order of fighting in game in a four kind of um and I added as well which are noticed by looking at other double-page spreads was a bit of branding for the magazine so sometimes in a magazine in the top hand corners they'll put the like teeny tiny in the magazines mustard um unlike the word exclusive or special feature or something like that so I've noted that I want to include that at some point as well but do not start messing about on convert until you've got a rough sketch really and you can change it as you're going through but until you've got that rough sketch and nowhere although the key minimum requirements are going because if you miss out for example a pull quote or stunt first you'll mark goes right down your grade goes right down because you haven't responded to the brief so really have it planned out in your mind where everything's going to go and one important thing to mention so had we've been in school I would be teaching you how to cut the background out of images and say Oh shot a lot of your talk like we've gone over that already but I would be reteaching that so that you could cut out the background of images and then you've got a lot more options with where you place the image because the background is transparent and a lot more option with the color you can fill your page with so most you'll notice most of all page spreads will feature images that kind of have a transparent background like that Nicki Minaj one for example and we can't do that unless you have Photoshop at home we can't really do that in a minute um but a workaround is searching on Google Images for dot PNG files because they're already transparent so to get that crafty guy I typed in I don't know karate fighter PNG and then it brought me to this website of like PNG files that were transparent I downloaded it in the PNG format and then I had to transfer an image um if you have any trouble with that then let me know you like and if you really desperate finish degree be transparent then I can give you more help more guidance on that that is one workaround only other thing that I've kind of included in my design that was based off what I notice from other double-page spreads is I've kind of um blocked off certain areas and so that it there's different sections of the article are like distinct from one another so I've put things in like red squares like that you bit in the bottom corner I want that to be distinguished from the main article so I put that in a red box as with the little images of kind of special features of the game I've put those in a little red box as well to keep them separate but yeah we're ready to get started on canva basically I don't love like optic canva as you have done before unfortunately Kumbha didn't have like a set template for a double-page spread so what you want to do is just search for landscape poster and imagine that's a three so you'll have notice my design the text looks tiny but that's because it's actually going to be blown up to a three in the end so if i zoom in and you'll see the text is actually quite big and on a real magazine but it is actually quite small text um so you've got all Majan that page B not a lot bigger than looks on the screen um I picked a background picked black background um think about your color scheme as you did with your font cover think about what the articles about think about the brand identity of your magazine when you think of citing and violence think of quite dark colors so I thought black was appropriate and like red as well so what I did first was got my images on the page I thought that's a good good place to start so I uploaded them like you judge for the front cover I uploaded them in the upload section um and place them on page where I wanted them to go you'll notice when you're moving things about on the page a pink line a pink vertical line will appear in the middle of the page that's showing you where's the halfway mark on the page so that's basically showing you ways staple liners pay attention to that so that you've got the pages neatly in order is it makes it easier you could even just draw a line and then delete it at the end just let you know that you've got the pages equally mapped out um I thought to make my images stand out as well and I've seen it to another magazine so just put a little border around them a little square if you click elements you can find loads of shapes that you can use for your design so you just type in the shape you want and then it comes out and then you can use it so I just found it like a line square and you step um I stuck my headline in after that played around with fonts loads because that was gonna be the branding from a game from a fighting game so I thought I need to look strong powerful mighty so I played around of fonts and sizes got that tower want it made make sure that it stayed on the one page didn't cross over that staple line in the middle next I went to put in so I added um I use shapes to kind of put in that scope logo there I just wanted to fill in the space you don't want any just random blank bits of space it'll look nice um I then added my stand first so if you're gonna go ahead and start to play around canva you don't actually need to put the text in for now that's something else that we want to consider and think about in detail so um I'll just took some text in to fill in the space I just wanted to get the layout right now following on from that also um text generally in um only magazine article if you go to those three buttons that you used for your cover to align the cover lines to each side if you press that I think four times it just comes up where's like four lines and the neat square that's what you want that's called making your text defined and it makes it go into a neat block so don't use the center tool because that gives to use ziggy-zaggy edges use the divine the define tool those four straight lines all the same length and that makes the text going to meet block and just look much better i looted a byline I wanted my byline to stand out so I'll put it in the red box use more shapes and I don't want to go too much further ahead with this video just cuz I think it's a lot to think about the double page spread I think it's better that we split it up in two and two lessons so give that a go then think what am I going to put in my double page spread look at other ones for inspiration think what will the headline be what are the five images that I'm going to put on there and most importantly how am I going to lay it out on the page and how am I going to include all those minimum requirements so have a look back through the video the lists of minimum requirements make sure you not missing anything um and then in the next video we'll start to put the finishing touches to get something that looks a bit more like this and this isn't even complete either I need to finish this so there you go uh any questions just email me or leave it in the comments I hope it helps and also I didn't even say though covers you can send me pins brilliant really high quality the fact that you've been producing those on your own without kind of any real direct support from me I think is fantastic you guys have been so independent and self-sufficient you learning it's really nice to see that's it I'll speak to you next time bye bye
