welcome to the carbon design system ibm's open source design system for digital products and experiences to get there go to IBM comm slash design and from the top right select product design carbon provides open source assets tools and guidance to accelerate the design and delivery of creating web-based products all built with the IBM design language as its foundation how much acceleration well let's find out let's design and build a web app from scratch with nothing but a fresh install of sketch which is a design tool and a command line and text editor on the development side so to get started we'll scroll down and we will start designing now I have sketch installed but with one click I can add the carbon design kit this includes everything that I need from the design language including colors and tight and components in the grid great so once we have that what we're gonna do let's build a web app for a petition product called IBM tacos using sketch and this carbon design kit I'm going to drop in all the carbon components that we need and then I'm gonna clean it up with a layout in the spacing to follow the IBM design language granite alrighty let's go [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] let's review what just happened here number one by using the carbon design kit from the start we're using the IBM design language colors and type grid and spacing components with very minimal effort this allows designers to spend their time on what really matters here their users number two the design kit uses shared naming with development so developers can see that heading - o2 is being used here where blue 6c is being used their product teams can speak the same language which speeds up the design and the development iteration and lastly I constructed this entire page using sketch symbols from the design kit so as long as I don't detach these symbols as the design language evolves over time say updated colors here or new button visuals there the design assets will automatically update this greatly reduces design debt that tends to accumulate over time now let's build IBM tacos to do so we're going to use react as our client-side JavaScript library and part of using react we're going to use a starter kit called create rack app that's going to spin up a new app for us with a bunch of niceties like live reload our local development environment to make development go quickly so after we have this app installed we're going to enter that directory and then we need to install a couple carbon dependencies so right now it's install three here the first one carbon components this includes our styling carbon components react these are our JavaScript components that we're going to place on the page and then also the icons to use with the react app itself we're also...
