this video was made possible by my supporters on patreon more on that at the end for most of my life the anti-trans movement was not marked by its subtlety especially here in north america transphobia had gone so unchallenged for so long that if you wanted to express disdain or disgust for trans people you didn't have to cloak it in moral concerns or fancy language ignorance was basically the default position in the past couple years though this has been changing and fast public awareness of trans issues is at an all-time high and people are starting to think of us as real human beings who might like compassion or even rights nowadays at least here in canada nakedly advocating hate crimes is considered a bad look so increasingly the anti-trans movement here has started taking notes from their friends in the uk where transphobia is normalized across the political spectrum they've started just asking questions raising concerns about trans people our movement and our ultimate motives driving these questions is concern for a supposedly radical gender ideology emerging in the trans community an ideology that poses a risk to variously women children abuse victims or the whole structure of our society and if you've been hearing about this gender ideology you might be concerned too after all a lot of credible people at a lot of major institutions are beginning to sound alarm bells today i hope to call out the dog whistles examine the concerns with the trans movement and hopefully set to rest some misconceptions about my community to do that the first question we need to answer is what do trans people believe accepting yourself as trans starts with accepting one thing i am the gender i feel most deeply in general society this kind of goes without saying i mean a cis man feels like a man even if he's never had to think about it but for trans people this truth often requires real work to uncover many of us lived years even decades as a gender we didn't feel deeply and figured that was just normal when you realize the gender you feel isn't the one you were assigned a second truth becomes self-evident it is possible to change your gender to one you're more comfortable with there isn't much rationalizing required to find this conclusion and it can happen regardless of your politics or personal views people assume trans folks must share these radical beliefs about gender but that's not the case just about everyone identifies the way that feels right to them so i think basically all trans people believe it's possible to change your gender or sex and that those who do should be recognized but in looking for agreement beyond that things get murky trans people have all kinds of takes on what gender is or means many of which completely contradict each other in most cases though a person's precise thoughts and feelings about gender could...
