hey everybody I'm Asian funk welcome back to my channel and in this video I'm gonna give a tutorial on how to window bag your comic books now I'm making this video because I've been asked several times about how I window bag my comic books now I always wondered why people just couldn't look up how to do this themselves and I realized there's only a handful of videos that have been made in the last four or five years that actually talks about this topic not even cgc has a dedicated YouTube video on how to window bag comic books which is insane so that's also part of the reason why I'm making this video now if you'd like to just skip straight to the actual tutorial on how to window bag your comic books just go down to the timestamp in the description down below and you can just skip right there now what is a window bag well this is a window bag this is the window bag and that's a window bag so window begging is just a term used to describe a cutout in your comic book plastic bag now collectors have referred to window bags as signing windows signature windows signature cutouts pre-cut windows whatever it is that you like to call it the official term that the industry uses is window bagging which i think is hilarious because I didn't even know that that was the official term they broke wondering they probably sell these pre-cut bags already right and you're right they do this is pretty much what a pre-cut window bag would look like if you were to buy it it comes in this shape where it basically has a 1 inch border all around and leaves the about 80% of the center of the book open for a signature or a sketch unfortunately once you want the signature in a very specific spot like maybe right on this bootie or maybe up here right near the title this pre-cut bag is useless so that's why a lot of collectors who go after signatures and sketches do this themselves because they have control over where the signature will go now again window beggars can come in very different sizes it just really depends what you're after if you are after a sketch you probably want to have your window bag at a larger size if you are looking for more of a specific spot on the cover to get signed then you can have something that's a little more rectangular same here obviously you can pretty much cut out the hole in the bag in any shape or size that you want it's really up to you it just depends on how creative and daring you want to be so the next question is why would you ever need to window bag a comic book like when why would you even have to do this and the short answer is because it's required sometimes if you participate in a private signing with CGC or CPCs or who some other facilitator they will require all books submitted to be window bagged before they receive it or else they will either charge you extra to do it for you or they will not let your book get signed by the creator and the second biggest reason is because you get to control where the signature goes and that is actually a big part of why I do it I like to be able to strongly suggest to the creator please sign in this area otherwise you are at the mercy of the creator signing wherever he or she wants to if you were to provide this type of cutout to creator they'll sign wherever they want right luckily this is a blank cover so it doesn't matter but if you were to maybe have that same large cutout on a cover like this who knows where you know for example Frank Miller is gonna sign this right um it's just a great way to eliminate a lot of questions unknowns it makes it easier for the creator to just get down to signing as opposed to thinking about where they want to sign so a good place to start before you even begin to window back your comic book is to research the signature of the creator you want and part of the reason why is because knowing how big the signature or the types of signatures from that same creator that you know about will help you figure out how big or where your window bag box is going to be on the cover another tip as to where you would start is research the the book that you are thinking of getting signed chances are someone out there has already gotten this exact book by the same exact creator in the spot that you're thinking of and so for you to be able to see that or visualize it will help you figure out well yep that's exactly where I want it or no maybe that is not where I wanted cuz it looks terrible now in this particular situation it would have been great if I had done the research if I had known that Dan Brereton has a very small squiggly signature and you know he preferred gold colored markers I would have probably selected a cover that was less busy and probably not the color that he liked to sign in unfortunately I picked the busiest cover that he has designed and it is also the most goldish looking and so you can't even tell that there's a signature on here and you can tell it's not where I designated because he has a preference as to where he likes to sign his comic book so those types of details would have been great to have known before I went to go see him myself and this is just part of the reason why it's great to do some research before you get your signatures done and even before you window bagged your comic book the third thing would be to find out the requirements of the signing event again different facilitators will have different asks of what they need from you and part of that is also because you're going to be putting information on the back such as your return address the Creator signature you want what event they're attending the name of the book sometimes if it's a virgin variant there's no title on the cover so there's no way the facilitators gonna know what book this is so to help them out they'll probably ask the title of the book where you want it to be shipped back to if you want it to be you know CGC verified etc etc so finding out details like that so what tools am I going to need to window bag a comic book well you are going to need an exacto knife or some kind of cutting tool or a box cutter I prefer to use an exact knife because feels more like a pencil I am more comfortable with this type of tool you are going to need a sharpie of some sort perfectly a dark colored one and the reason being is because you will probably be writing information on things and so obviously you probably want something dark you're gonna need some sort of colored tape I prefer to use blue painters tape for a few reasons one it's easy to see - you can write on it pretty easily and the biggest reason is that once you've laid this tape down it is easy to remove without really ripping the tape itself and it is easy to tear with your own fingers I know there's some tape that is not so using this type of tape makes life a lot easier you are gonna need some sort of straightedge to cut straight lines I prefer to use a ruler this one is metal with a rubber backing part of the reason why that is is because you will probably putting this on slippery surfaces like a plastic bag and having a rubber bottom prevents you from cutting a crooked line or sliding and you know cutting your comic book that's crazy to think about so I really like something that is not gonna be sliding all over the place last but not least you are gonna need an extra backing board or just any piece of cardboard that you don't care about you are going to be cutting into this multiple times you don't want to mess up the comic or the backing board that it's in so now that you know what a window bag is why you would ever have to do it and the tools that you will need to do it let's actually get to the actual tutorial so for this tutorial I am choosing the amazing spider-man 33 Walmart exclusive variant I am a fan of Alex Ross and I have gotten sinkers from him in the past I know that his signatures are medium size they are very squiggly and thin I am going to probably pick this area right here so I'm gonna go ahead and pick the length of this comic book normally I like to cut off the edges here so it's not like sticking out but for the sake of this tutorial we're just gonna go with it so I've set one side up I usually like to just kind of pick one side and start from there now we're gonna go ahead and do another side I want to keep his signature below the legs so let's go about this high here now I like to tape over the previous side you don't have to do that you can go exactly on the edge this is just a personal preference so now I'm just gonna go ahead and match the other side right about here like I said I just wanted I want to sing sure below the legs right between the legs now it's okay if you don't completely cover it corner to corner you are just gonna death you're gonna be cutting a hole anyway and then oh oh shoot you weren't supposed to see that so far the reason why it's also good to use this type of tape is because you can always fix your mistakes if you want to reset your tape there you go that looks way nicer so great so now that you have your window bag taped up let's go ahead and remove the comic book now remember that extra vacuum board I was talking about this is what's gonna come in handy you're gonna go ahead and put that in in place of where the comic book was so now we're gonna go ahead and take the exacto knife and the ruler and now we're gonna make our cuts I don't about you guys but I actually find this therapeutic so I'm just going and cutting one side at a time I'm using the ruler and the blue tape as it's a visual of where I should be cutting you can be as precise or as sloppy as you want I just like to be very exact okay so now that you've made your cut go ahead and remove the plastic that you just cut out and now you have a window bag now this parts really tricky because I've made the mistake of just foolishly jamming this book back in without really thinking that oh maybe the comic book could get caught right here which it sometimes does and then you end up damaging your comic book so I just like to be very aware of where the cut is and if you can open it up as it goes down that way there you go always cover up your blade when you're done now I like to indicate usually where it wants signatures to be again that is a personal preference not a requirement otherwise that is how you window bag a comic book if you have any questions or want me to go into detail about anything else in this video please leave it in the comments down below if you enjoyed this video please hit the like button and the
