so in this lesson we're going to connect to a Cisco switch and do some configuration in order to do that we need a specific app that can allow us to connect to the switch and that's called a terminal emulation program that terminal emulation program can be used to connect in various ways to the switch for instance via a comport if you're sitting right next to the switch you might want to use the console port on the switch to configure it if you would like to do that you need to open up your terminal emulation program you need to select your serial port and configure it to these following default Cisco settings a baud rate of 9600 data bits of 8 no parity in one stop it in flow control when we login to the system types of prompts the first one is the host name and a pound sign and that's called the exec mode you can't do a lot of configuration there but you can do different commands to show and see what's going on with the switch the second configuration mode is a mode we call global configuration mode this is represented by the host name of the switch and a config followed by a pound sign the changes made in this mode usually affect the entire switch as a whole finally when we want to go in and modify individual interfaces we will do that through the interface configuration mode where we say that mode is signified by the host name of the switch a config dash F and a pound sign to get to these different modes when you start off in exact mode you would type in config T or configure terminal to get to the interface configuration mode once you are in the config key mode you would type in the interface that you want to modify interface space e 1/1 I'll show you more of this later on for now these are the different steps we're going to run through in our switch configuration the first thing we're going to do is go through a switch setup procedure normally in the switch setup procedure you set the administrative password first you go through some other steps and then you set the management interface address the switch name and possibly even a banner message or a message of the day and that is a message that people see when they initially connect to the switch that is not part of the initial setup but I will show you how to do it as a separate item finally we'll take a look at the startup versus the running config and how to save the startup config to the running config and explore some various show commands so let's go ahead and start configuring the switch here I have opened my terminal emulation program if I was going to connect via the console port or a serial port I would go...
