we recently studied ephesians together this past summer in its second chapter there is a line that encapsulates paul's teaching found across his letters it writes for by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing it is the gift of god not the result of works so that no one may boast it was to teach the newly converted christians that justification comes from having faith in christ and not by doing the works of the torah or the law and this teaching makes sense when we recall the gospel stories where jesus faced opposition against the legalistic pharisees and the scribes for a lot of the newly converted christians and especially for those jewish christians this legalistic trait was still part of their dna as they kept going back to focusing on the works of the torah and what i believe paul was trying to do was to help them see beyond their dna to fully grasp the good news of jesus christ who made justification which is the divine forgiveness and pardon of our sins available to us not by our own merits but by god's grace which is free after about 1500 years this teaching was newly branded under the phrase solafide which means faith alone through martin luther's protestant reformation this doctrine of justification by faith alone becomes one of the most essential teachings in the protestant church and this is still the case in today's american church what i found interesting is that this same guy martin luther was not a fan of the letter of james which was read this morning he called james on an epistle of straw as he believed james was not as significant as the other letters and thought it should not belong in the bible why it is most likely because of what is written in james chapter 2 which contradicts the doctrine of solafide it is written in james what good is it my brothers and sisters if you say you have faith but do not have works can faith save you if your brother or sister is naked and likes daily food and one of you says to them go in peace keep warm and eat your fill and yet you do not supply their bodily needs what is the good of that so faith by itself if it has no works is dead in short faith without works is dead according to james and this sounds very different from the catchphrase faith alone and yes i fully understand that faith alone is more than a catchphrase it is a doctrine a teaching but i think that is where the problem rises people both back then and right now do not like to read the whole thing we only see the title and do not read the rest of the article faith alone is so provocative and so easy to remember so people whether from the 1st or 16th or...
