Hi. This is Alena and welcome to Along Came English. On this channel, I give bitesize tips on how English works. I also have a podcast and you can follow me on Twitter and Facebook. Links are somewhere down below. Today's video is about how to pronounce words containing 2 c's. With most double consonants like p-p or l-l, usually they are pronounced as a single consonant sound like "apple" or "ball". With two c's however, this is not always the case, which we'll look at in more detail. As I have mentioned in previous videos, English is not a phonetic language, so you may have to memorise some of these. But I do have a few tips that can be helpful. As you may already know, the letter "c" can be pronounced as either /k/ or /s/. The first way to pronounce two c's in a word is as a single /k/ consonant sound. Letter groups that end with "a", "o" and "u" are pronounced this way. For example: "occasion," "broccoli," "accumulate." Letter groups that end with a consonant are usually pronounced this way as well Like: "accrue," "acclaimed," "disaccharide." Next, double c can be pronounced with a /k/ sound followed by a /s/. Letter groups that end with "e" and "i" are pronounced this way. For example: "succeed," "accent," "vaccine." The letter group ending with "y" is also pronounced this way. Like "coccyx." But this is very rare. And exceptions to this rule are certain words of Italian origin. Like: "cappuccino," "fettuccine," "cacciatore." Although you can say "gnocchi" with a single /k/ consonant sound. Alright. That's all for today's bitesize English. I hope you found this helpful. If you have any questions or suggestions for future videos, please leave them in the comments below. Also, thank you so much for watching and liking this video. Do subscribe for more and don't forget that bell button as well for future notifications. Have a good day and I'll catch you later. Bye!
