now you put out a report amongst with central banks which basically sets out the core principles for national digital currencies now that um is as some central banks around the world are actually publicly saying they're still evaluating are you surprised by the pace of change at which we could see in this space i was i mean uh well first good morning and thank you for having me um i was surprised i've been surprised last year yeah yeah i mean i mean and and and all throughout the year i mean 2020 clearly has been the year where uh research and experimenting on cbdc has taken a leap forward i'm not surprised anymore but uh i've been surprised and clearly the pandemics has to do about it i mean clearly that has been a big push to a contactless payments under and digital payments generally this of course is the role of cbdc as a part of the payment system as opposed to monetary tools do you see that possibly changing in the future um no i see i see or i see central banks around the world addressing cbdc primarily as a payment instrument and that's driven by change around us or i mean change in uh and by the way that's the system is changing at both ends right at the at the back end we're seeing blockchain uh uh uh infrastructures and we uh we're asking ourselves how to bring central back money to these new infrastructures and at the front end we are seeing a lot of new uh customer friendly applications and new ways to pay and here also we have to wonder how we bring something more money to that end of the market but it's uh it's primarily a payment discussion it's not primarily a monetary policy discussion that may change in the future but i don't see that today benoit norrio rabini is going to join us here later on surveillance he and many many others really question the underpinnings of bitcoin over to cyber currencies and what banking's trying to do how can commercial banks affect this business without the taint of the crime and the scam associated with bitcoin well you know there is room for everyone under the sun so it's certainly not the central central bank's intention to uh to stifle innovation or to or to kill these markets i mean there is a there is a there is a lot of scope for innovation in the crypto space uh what we want to do is to see it are being safe for consumers uh and that relates to uh on-time money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism and so on and so forth and so everything is possible innovation is welcome but regulation has been very strong and tight and that's what you've seen happening uh over the last years in uh everywhere and we also want to see uh how our commercial...
