hey guys anthony morganti here today we're going to talk about the why and how of making multiple versions of an image in [Music] lightroom [Music] let's talk about the y first i have this image i processed it in color i'm satisfied with it but a little part of me is wondering i wonder what it would look like in black and white or you know there's a really old building here i wonder what it would look like sepia toned or you know that blue is really saturated whatever i wonder what it would look like with less saturated blue well i could come in and let's say go to the basic tab and convert it to black and white and then maybe put the temp slider up go to the black and white mix and i could start messing around here with sliders and get it you know and then you know i don't know as i'm looking at it you know what i really liked it better in color so then i have to undo everything so i have to like reset my black and white mix i have to remember what i did and reset the sliders the way they were before i converted it to black and white no i only did three different kind of groups of adjustments there if i did a lot more i may have forgot what i did in what order i did them and then i going back and undo them it's just a chore well that's where these alternate versions really work out well in lightroom and there's two different ways to create like alternate versions in lightroom the first way i used to use all the time but i found that more recently i've been using the second way more often each has advantages and disadvantages and let's talk about them both first we'll start out with the first one virtual copies virtual copies are really cool i could create a virtual copy of this image and then down in the film strip there'll be another version of that image but on my hard drive there isn't another file there so you're not taking up any additional hard drive space all the edits are kept in the catalog so i could have edits for the original image in different edits for the virtual image and i'm not taking up any more space on my computer now to create a virtual copy you can just right click on the image and you could go down to create virtual copy or you could go up to photo and down to create virtual copy but i prefer the keyboard shortcut on a mac it's command apostrophe on a pc it's control apostrophe and when you do that you'll see down in the film strip now i have two versions of the image you can tell this one is a virtual copy because the corner is folded up now when...
