[Music] hi i'm dr pedro mazzani i'm the former chief medical resident of morehouse family medicine residency and welcome to ac medical where we mentor over 500 medical residency candidates every year you're probably watching this video because it's residency application crunch time and you cannot decide if you should apply to us medical residency programs on time because the letter of recommendation that you've been depending on has not been uploaded yet first of all we need to identify the problem the first problem could be the writer's willingness or the stamina or the time or the ability to follow through or follow directions this is very very common and what do i mean by that there's 11 steps to getting your letter of recommendation that at any time all of these can fall apart here are the 11 steps number one the letter writer has to strategize what do they want to talk about then they gotta type it up then step three they gotta proofread it then they gotta share it with you to proofread and that's if you did not believe your right to see it and sometimes they'll give you a copy of it regardless even if you did wait you're right to see the letter then making changes that you requested this could take several rounds probably and then digitally or manually sign it then scan it upload it back into their desktop as a pdf then following the directions in the letter of recommendation request from you which you emailed them several weeks or months ago then using the letter id to upload the letter of recommendation into double amc's lor portal and then dealing with reasons for why the file that they're trying to upload is not uploaded for example if it is over one megabyte which is not that big or if your letter contains special characters such as an asterisk or a question mark or if it's not on an eight and a half by 11 inch paper so all of those could prevent it from being uploaded and then at any time you asking for any changes means that you're having them go through all of these steps all over again which again all of these can break apart so that's the first one second reason the letter writer may be just absolutely overwhelmed by the number of requests that they're receiving this is also very very common some physicians receive over 100 requests and i know of one of our hospitals that has received over 600 requests for a letter of recommendation this all has to be fulfilled within a two to three week time spent so you want to ask a writer if there's anything that you can help them with and then you want to visit acmedical.org forward slash l-o-r for some tips my recommendation is for you to not wait your right to see it so you can take control of this process and you...
