hello and welcome my name is georgina emerson i'm reporting to you from teach about women hq here in austin texas i want to tell you about a great new program that we are launching it is our program to certify k-12 teachers staff and admin as educators for gender equity these will be folks who know how to integrate gender equity into every aspect of school life from curriculum to hiring policies and most importantly who know how to give the next generation the skills and knowledge they need to build an equitable world what does it take to become certified as an educator for gender equity first you got your foundations this is a course that everybody takes it's the same course we get some core knowledge and definitions out there things like the difference between sex gender and sexuality what's womanism what's feminism what stands in the way of gender equity um and then um we set some goals for ourselves as well okay so we all have a common language next our other core course is on equity this is where we look at how other aspects of identity especially race shape one's experience of gender and we make sure that all of our students regardless of their gender their race their background or country of origin really feel a sense of belonging in our k-12 schools next we've got what we call liberatory community practices okay these are things that are not exactly role specific but more kind of community specific things like cultivating resilient masculinities um making sure that trans and non-binary kids feel a sense of belonging in your community then finally we've got the role specific applications okay this is where as a let's say an eighth grade science teacher you learn what you need to know to diffuse unconscious biases in your teaching where a high school history teacher can learn how to present a complete picture of the human experience one that includes women and questions about gender finally to get certified every single educator will make a capstone contribution to our free educator database called teach about power this is a resource that other teachers can use to bring equity into their communities finally we've got the thing that binds it all together goes right in the center this is our community aspect our every educator for gender equity will be part of a cohort these are your friends colleagues mentors hopefully friends definitely your colleagues mentors and peers uh who can support you in your growth and help you um hold yourself accountable and make sure that any changes you make are really for the long term studies have shown that having a community support system like this can help you develop really long-term habits for success all right so that's what it takes to be certified as an educator for gender equity i want to thank carolyn chica kemi wappipa dr leah owens shianna morton brandie wade...
