two weeks ago it really hit me with the prayer jay pass when he said that javascript means pain and then he prays for lord to keep him from pain he's asked god to keep it from himself i need you all to help keep me from myself because i don't always say no as i need to and then it frustrates the mess out of me will get to this place my name is reverend mark lavron i serve as the assistant to the pastor for online ministry since covid19 um we've had to re-imagine what worship looks like in the sanctuary um i want to say the first week or the first two weeks we tried to replicate the exact worship experience that we had in um in the sanctuary and we quickly realized that we weren't trying to do that wasn't paying enough attention to what this pandemic was actually doing the tough part is i've got board orientations that day that's also when i present for this thing in california in the evening howard john wesley and i'm the senior custodian at alf street baptist church i clean up all the messes and i am glad to be part of the staff and i also double up as a senior pastor so once covet hit new opportunities came to the church that we probably could have seen before but weren't just operating in or activating towards like um upping our broadcast schedule and the excellence with which we do ministry as opposed to just hitting on when we're in the building being a little bit more intentional about sermon direction and so we had to reimagine what church would bringing church to someone's living room could actually look like because we're in the midst of crisis and the word has to be relevant if you think about all that's come together with covid with black lives matter with the election and trying to navigate through those waters every week to help people keep people sane stable and sanctified i'm looking at my calendar i cannot keep up i can't keep up with writing new sermons writing can i push it doing all these random announcements for outfit things and externally so me and one thing and brooke and mark as well my calendar is closed for the rest of the year it's kind of a shock to come out of sabbatical that way but knowing that i had been gifted by the church with several months off to be able to prepare so i was ready for it excited to be back i didn't want the church navigating through these waters without me being part of that journey my name is brooke watson and i currently serve as the manager of creative production and online engagement most people know me as the director of kaya i've been serving in that role since 2016 and in march of this year when kovet initially hit i received a phone call from pastor wesley um asking if i would take part in some conversations about how to take services to the next level with online worship being that we were shifting from live in-person worship to now production and of course with no hesitation i said yes and so i've been on board with creative production since march it's been the toughest thing to do because it meant we had to we had to give up certain things that were quote unquote instrumental or were what we were known for at alfred street in order to continue to beat alfred street during this time taking our bible study in a different direction with can i push it it's been a little bit more intentional and directly right now it's just the opening oh you're filmed right we feel all right we just filmed so the law we're mailing and pastor wesley is usually in high demand for outside engagements and external preaching commitments so that's usually on another day so at any point it could be three to four days of production where we're doing sermons where we're doing bible study or external engagements as well so no week is ever the same the times always change this is tough and um it hasn't been easy uh there's been days and weeks um where um i work with brooke and brooke is amazing addition to alfred street and there's been days and weeks where we had to say you got this week and i'm going to take a little bit self-care time for me and next week i got you um we have definitely had to jump over some hurdles in terms of production and lighting and needing new equipment and i think people think that we are alfred street you know the historic alfred street baptist church and that we had it all figured out but we stumbled through the first few weeks of production and getting things right i could only imagine how difficult this transition has been for pastor wesley prior to covet 19 pastor wesley was on sabbaticals on selah and so for really an entire year he has yet to see his congregation kind of shocking um sabbatical was coming to an end but hadn't and to feel the need and pressed to be back for the urgency of the church realized that it was also palm sunday and easter coming right around the corner but sensing this real urgency that that we're about to hit crisis naively assumed that once the church doors were closed and we no longer have the demand of four worship services one on saturday and three on sunday the life would be a little bit easier i could not have been more wrong so some changes we've made since covid back in march our service was very full we are a traditional black baptist church so you know you came in there was the call to worship there was praise and worship there were hymns there was the offering there was you know altar call and all these things this experience has exposed so much of the so many areas that we've lacked but that just wouldn't have been discovered in a live format and one thing we did learn we would start to analyze the analytics on youtube and we realized that people were really only tuning in for about 27 minutes of our worship experience and so why have an hour and a half long worship experience if people are only tuning in for 27 minutes so we're thinking of set designs we're thinking of you know we're thinking of how how to present something that can keep an audience captivated we're thinking about how to continue to keep people coming back every day so now our service is a welcome from pastor wesley praise and worship generally um a giving moment where pastor wesley speaks to the importance of giving and how the giving impacts the community and then we go right into the sermon but now they're recordings of greetings and panels and sermons that all have to be recorded during the week and ready sometimes for weekends sometimes a week out so a lot of forethought and planning and production schedule has increased so we have production days where we give we go all out in our worship for our worship team and our worship team records and we bring in all people to do our call to worships and we bring in pastor and then pastor has to record other messages this new opportunity god has given us required much more of us that should have been anticipated the production schedule is rigorous the number of meetings we have to have to plan out everything the number of times we gathered to record the preparation for recording in the past sermon was easier in the sense that the congregation was present the mic was on i just stood up to preach at the heart of what we've been doing while always knowing at the end of the day god is going to bring all these parts together preparing for production actually doing the production and the volume of production has been a lot more than we ever thought it would be you
