hey welcome to digital constructive calm and in this video we're going to be talking about the plumbing license also known as the c36 license or often known as the plumbing contractor license so what is a plumbing contractor now this description is straight from the CSLB website now I'm not gonna read all through it but you know I would suggest you go to our website check this out it's really about you know complete removal of waste from the premises of the construction and connection of on-site waste disposal systems piping storage tanks gas appliances water and gas piping from property installation there's a lot of different things that are covered under the plumbing license so you really want a deep description of everything that's covered check out the description or you can go to our website and or you can go to the CSLB website all this information is straight up there so the c36 license is a requirement for anybody that's looking to contract for work associated with plumbing or the total cost exceeds $500 in labor and materials now how long does it take to get the c36 license you're looking at an average timeframe of about 90 days now time of year whether or not your application is put up for further review or if you have a criminal history these are all different factors that can add to that 90 days I've seen some cases where it takes less than 90 days this isn't a rule of thumb generally you're looking at an application processing time of about six to eight weeks and then typically three to four weeks after that is when you actually go and take your exam so what are the basic requirements for a contractor license you've got to be at least 18 years old you've got to have a valid driver's license or USAID you've got to have a Social Security or ITIN number and you can't currently be on probation or parole now what are the experience requirements for the plumbing license you've got to have at least four years full-time journey level experience that is within the last 10 years you've got to have somebody who can sign off on that experience and you've got to be able to submit some type of documentation of your plumbing experience if the CSLB asks to see some type of documentation so who can sign off for your c36 license you could have a general contractor sign off you could have a c36 plumbing license holder you could either have a formative supervisor you could have a fellow journeyman or employee at a company that you work at you could even in some cases have a business associate to sign off on your plumbing experience so filling out your c36 likeness c36 license application so your qualifying individual whoever you choose to sign off on your experience is also going to need to provide a brief but detailed description of your knowledge and your skillset now the way this description is written is critical to whether or not your application is accepted so for example bob is a great guy and he fixed our toilet it's just not descriptive enough for the CSLB they're gonna want to see something that sounds more like bob has repaired plumbing problems he's installed gas lines sewer lines installed bathroom fixtures water lines and pre piped buildings now don't take that word forward but that's just to give you an idea of how descriptive you're gonna want to be when filling out the contractor license application so criminal history now everybody has to do Live Scan fingerprinting when they apply for a contractor license so if you do have a criminal record be honest on your application even if it happened years ago even if you don't think it was that important even if it got expunged just be honest because it's gonna come up when you do your Live Scan typically the CSLB is more looking for fraud forgery or embezzlement these are the big red flag charges for the CSLB so if your charges don't fall under those three categories typically you'll be okay but you're just gonna want to be prepared to submit any court documents that the CSLB asked you to submit so what's on the exam there's going to be two parts there's going to be a hundred and fifteen questions on contractor license law you'll answer another 115 questions on plumbing you'll have three hours to complete each portion of the exam it's a multiple-choice test and it's going to be done on-site on a computer and you can bring a translator if you need to so what's on the c36 license exam so 21% of the exam is going to cover planning and estimation 27% of the test is going to cover rough-in and top out plenty of plumbing systems 14% of the test is gonna cover finish plumbing installations 20% of the exam is going to cover service repair and remodel plumbing systems and 18% of the test is going to cover safety so this is just a snapshot of the plumbing license exam for a deeper look at everything that you need to know I would suggest that you check out our website on the C 36 license so after you pass your contractor license exam you get your results immediately you take the test on a computer so you'll know whether or not you pass or fail right there on the spot you can retake the exam typically you can retake it within three weeks I've seen some situations where you can take it sooner than that but generally you're looking at about three weeks at that point you're gonna pay your license activation fee and then you're gonna provide what's called a contractor bond number now after that you get your contractor license in the mail and about two to three weeks typically so what are the costs associated with the license you're gonna pay for a state application fee you're gonna pay a license activation fee and then a renewal fee every two years you're gonna pay for fingerprinting and then you've got to provide your contractor bond fee now there's a video at the end of this video you're gonna see a you see two videos you're gonna see one for the contractor bond and then you're gonna see another one covering the most up-to-date California contractor license fees so you're gonna want to watch both of those videos so you know the most up-to-date fees that it's gonna take for the c36 license so in conclusion you know getting your c36 plumbing license it can be a very smooth process if you have the correct information and your application is filled out correctly now you
