Copy byline data
In this video we'll take a look at how to copy a dataset or a data file in SPSS. I'm going to show you a method you may be familiar with first, and then after that I want to show you another method in SPSS that's really quite nice and it's very quick. So the method you might be familiar with if you use Word or Excel, is if you just go and go to File and click Save As, and then the notice the file name is shown here and I can just go ahead and add something like underscore 2 to the existing name. Now if I did that, what would happen is that the underscore 2 file would open up here. This existing file, job satisfaction, would be saved to my computer. And, I would effectively now have a new file, job satisfaction underscore 2. So that's one way to do it. I'm going to cancel this out though. I want to show you the other way that's quite interesting. Well, first of all, there is a rudimentary way, and that is if I just select all these values, open a new data editor in SPSS, paste it, I will get all the values in the new SPSS file. I won't get the variable names, but I'll get the values. But there's a much nicer way to do this here. If I go to Data and then notice down here where it says Copy Dataset, now before I do this, recall this is job satisfaction, so Data, Copy Dataset, click on that. And that was so fast, you might not have seen it. Notice now I have untitled 5 and it's only 5 because I've done this with some previous documents that I didn't record here. But this file, untitled 5, notice how it has the exact same number of variables, with the same values there, and if you checked, there would be 50 observations here, and there's 50 observations in my original data set. So that is a way to duplicate a file. Once again, that was just Data, Copy Dataset and then I'll need to go ahead and save my new data set with a name, but that's a very simple method for copying a data file. OK that's it. Thanks for watching.
