Copy lots age
hello and welcome back to the studio here in northumberland today i'm going to do a watercolor pencils demonstration and the reason why i'm doing a watercolor pencils one i've done a couple already but i want to show you how to do water in this one because it's a bit scary doing water so everything else in this little painting that i'm going to do is just a background to the water i'm using my lankton pad lantern roof paper 140 pound weight that one and i'm just going to check to the board there and that's my piece of paper before i start with the watercolor pencils i'm just going to do a quick outline drawing just of the building to show you what i'm doing you don't need to do this really but i'm just showing you what i'm aiming another building there just a little outline coming up here there and here's a very tall chimney this is loosely based on willy lopes cottage in suffolk and he's standing by a lake look at that and we've got another bit here and coming down there like so with another chimney here big one big tall one and come down there that's the sides of the building like i said it's loosely based i've missed the wing off but that'll be fun a window in there and two in that end there's going to be lots of trees and bushes around this as well and we'll have two in this end as well there's a tree and there are big trees behind here and some bushy bits at the bottom bushy bits that's the first technical term for this one now here is where the water comes in that's the edge of it that and just coming around there and here's a bit of a path sorry a path there drawing down now it's into the water watercolor pencils uh i use lyra watercolor pencils because lyra is part of the daler rowney group or dale around he's part of the lyra group it's a huge company these days but that's not the only reason it's because they're good watercolor pencils and that there's lots of different size tints i've got a tin of 24 here and you can see the ones i'm going to use and the ones that i don't use very often um there's a few that i've used here but i always sharpen them with a knife because when you've got a sharp point you've just got one really good drawing point which is the sharp point whereas if you use a knife to sharpen them you've got lots of different angles and edges for different ways of drawing so i like sharpening them with a knife that's a tin of 24. they also come in tins of 12. they come in all different sizes of tins that's a 10 of 12 which again you can see i've shortened the ones that i'm using all the time but there's lots of different size tins of pencils you can buy tunes of 76 or something like that something ridiculous it's a bit of overkill as far as i'm concerned because if you're painting landscapes painting landscapes sorry 24 you can't really want any more colors than that and don't forget i'm also mixing watercolor pencils on the brush mixing different colors with two or three different watercolor pencils on the brush but i'll show you that as we go along so i'm sticking with my tip of 24 and what i'm going to do first of all is stick a sky wash on which will then dry and then i'll do the do the coloring in on top because it really is just like coloring in now i've got my outline drawing i know what i want i know where i want to put individual colors so i just put colors within each block it really is coloring in it's a bit like a kid's drawing this which then becomes a painting so what i'm going to start with for the sky wash i've got prussian blue here and what i'm going to do because quite often what happens is if you draw on when you sky wash then when you wet it you end up with lines see so instead of doing that take the paint off the pencil i've got my one and a half inch flat wash brush here and to be honest this is probably the only i've got i only use four brushes in total but this is probably going to be the only brush i use for this painting prussian blue what on there i'm going through the house you don't have to be precious about that you don't have to go around it and be very careful just paint on a little bit more just like normal watercolors it's going to dry lighter than when the one is wet i always like lighter than when you put it on so i'll get a little bit stronger here and there and again just like normal watercolors once i've put the wash on take some clouds out just treat it like watercolor because that's all it is it's in a pencil and the lyre watercolor pencils by the way are an artist pigment watercolor pencil lovely things that's it sky dub leave it now my sky's dried more or less anyway you can still see a few drips of water here and there but they're not gonna bother me but what i'm going in with is this is a lovely color actually for red roofs venetian red it's called and like i said this really is just a matter now of coloring in venetian red there around my chimney and i'm not pressing on too hard if you want a stronger darker color press on harder if you don't want it too strong don't press on as hard it's just like any kind of drawing if you want your pencil mark to be stronger you press on harder and with these if you want the color to be stronger press on harder just close it you can with the roof lines and then get on here it's important that you let the sky dry first because if you if you go in with the watercolor pencil afterwards when the sky's still damp quite often you will end up with a mark that you can't shift you can't move it afterwards so just make sure it's totally dry that now what i am going to do here i am going to be mixing color on the paper so this one i've got a little bit off where's my red there we go i've got a little bit of red and prussian blue i'm going to put some of that on there because this will be for a little bit of shadow from that roof onto that one and a little bit of prussian blue which is the blue of the sky just be aware that what you're going to want your darker areas as you as you're actually drawing looks a little strange there it'll be fine now a little bit of gold ochre this one we're going to have this on the light side of the building so both chimneys watercolor pencils are just so useful for taking out on location with you you don't need much kit one brush pad of paper and your chin of pencils that's all you need to take with you down here as well i might press on a little bit harder there actually a little bit harder there now i've got van dyke brown lovely brown i don't want to press on too hard here because i'm going to paint shadows on the whole building afterwards and don't press on too hard on this side again you see what i'm talking about now it's just like you get your kids to color in i'm just coloring in once you've got a drawing to color in it's dead easy on this side feels very good at getting all the camera angles and getting in close when i'm doing bits but it's really quite disconcerting when you breathe in your ear a bit more down here not pressing on as hard there now in the windows i've got black now what i'm doing look we'll have a little blob with a gap in between see and on some parts with the watercolor pencils you can leave bits that you don't wet just leave them as lines leave them standing out which is what i shall do with the windows that's four blobs here and there six blobs here and there but with a gap in between each there now into some greenery i'm starting off with a library which is apple green i don't know who thinks of all these names and all i'm doing look is coloring the trees in stages okay it might be called apple breed but to me it's a nice light green pressing on fairly hard here as well always down there and on here keeping it with the light coming from the right order now i've got sap green again pressing on a little bit harder carefully around the building and all the magic with watercolor pencils what are you doing this way all the magic happens when you put the water on afterwards which is not that far away now but like i said out on location you don't actually have to wet them at all if you don't want do your drawing out there on location then get back home or back to your studio then put the water on and make it into a painting rather than a drawing i mean you can come back a year later from now and re-wet it and make it into a painting now i want a little bit of this is a green that is really really dark night green that's what it's called look how dark that is lots of different greens going in here this has got more of a blue tinge to this one i'm taking this right up to the edge of the house there look here as you know when i'm painting with watercolors just traditional watercolors or with acrylics i always just use hook hooker's green and mix all of my different greens from hooker's green with every other color mixed in but with these you've got such lovely greens that are useful for everything that one put more line here around the chimney carefully don't like that bit that's better that's better and a bit of that in here as well quite a bit of blue in that so be careful in that green mix so be careful just how hard you press now i am doing this in sections get the house and all these surroundings in first before we start with this bottom bit here um so i'm going to wet all this now and then let that dry before i carry on so back with my brush just clean water and all i'm doing love he's wet the building the drawing now mix that color there with the water i've got a darker section of roof there i'm gonna get in here and suddenly it becomes watercolor paint wash my brush out and just with the sharp edges of the brush there wet that and down here unlike these all i've got to be careful of in the main building is with my windows just go around those look and you see with the texture of the paper i've got a lovely stone work texture to my building i mean you can use a smaller brush if you want but it's easier to use a big one because you get covered quicker wash my brush out again and again into here and these brushes hold so much water after dipping too many times the only time i'm dipping in is when i'm going to another section of the house like now right now and that bit and again into here i'm not particularly bothered with detail in this middle section of the house what's going to be lots of shadow down there and now i'll just stroke over again get rid of any rough bits that i don't want right there now into the trees i'm dabbing on here and merging the greens together carefully around my building with a nice sharp edge brush like this it's easy to go around buildings see moving the greens around a little bit and a little bit there and just move that there that's right and again over here and all of these trees but this one especially is gonna cast shadows on the building in a minute now here's a little trick what i'm doing here is picking up the mixed screens as i'm merging them so now i've got green on my brush create a bit of distance there look very very weak pick it up stick it up there drop it on there and we'll leave that for a minute now my house is not quite dry but it's more or less dry it's dry enough anyway so what i'm gonna do now is put all the shadow throughout the building and for this as i've said before you can mix on the paper put one color on top of another and when you wet it you've made a new color like i did just there this time i'm going to mix on the brush but what i'm doing i've got a bit of my prussian blue because that's the blue of the sky and a bit of red this one is i don't know the names of the colors dark calming it's a nice red basically and i'm mixing on the brush look and what i'm doing first just test my color there not quite dark enough so i need a bit more blue a bit more red less water a bit more red always handy to have a side piece of paper on the go before you're mixing yeah that's nice and all i'm doing is getting into the building there a nice dark line underneath the roof edges like so and in here and down there now that building will cast a shadow there sorry that bit of building will cast a shadow there like so that chimney will cast a shadow there on the roof and that one the same a little bit of shadow down the side of the chimneys as well what i'm doing look it's just a stroke down just with the corner of the brush and bring it on there very very simple but very effective so i'm just going to darken that a little bit more oops and now that bit of tree bush will cast a shadow on the building in there like so and on the roof there now we'll have a little bit within the windows as well i actually know before that a little bit more on that roof there that has and there and there now give that whole thing a little bit there actually a bit more water into the mix so it's slightly darker just there now add a little bit of age to the building look i'm remixing look bit there a little bit of texture to the building a bit of age a bit now just with a cleaned out brush soften that the edges look so i'm just adding you to the building now still with that same mix but i'm strengthening it a little bit a bit more red and all i'm doing is going into the windows a little bit there at the top with the top there and there and now down the right hand side bit digital out there there building done easy but the trees are not done but these are now dried so what i'm going to do is get a little bit of my yellow which this one is canary yellow put that lightening a bit more look and a little bit here and that i'm not going to wet just leave it just a bit more light on top there i am pressing on quite hard but just lighting the tops with these brushes with these pencils sorry you can see i'm wetting them with the brush and i'm mixing or i'm wetting them for the sky and just putting on but what happens then so all you need to do look wash it out there wipe it out and that pencil is now dry and ready to use again you don't have to worry about them but just dry them off when you're finished now i'm going to get a little bit of my yellow i'm going to get loads of stuff going on here now a bit of yellow here canary yellow a few bits on here and i'm pressing on fairly hard and i'm just putting it all over the place really in bits just here and there now greens so a little bit of my apple green also the names of the colors make me laugh a bit of that a bit over here basically it's just the same greens as in the trees get them all mixed in colors all over the place now a little bit of my sap green darker well a few bits of red in here as well i think and some of this if you don't if you if you prefer you can leave it just that pencil mark nothing wrong with a few hard bits here and there hard sharper edges and a little bit of venetian red i think would be quite nice i don't need much just a few touches warm up slightly here and there and you notice i haven't drawn the path sorry the path now just back to my brush dabble wet push that red in a little bit more there how simple is that just to make grass somebody said to me on twitter the other day what have you got up against londoners because i'm always saying grass and grass or path and path i've got anything against london it's just that it's good fun to take the mickey now it's time for the water this is not dried yet but it doesn't matter i'm not going to touch it for a minute so all i'm doing look i don't want to press on too hard there that's a little bit of my bandai brown again a few touches here and a little bit of the gold milker right down there all i'm doing is looking what's above it back a bit of bandai brown now some greens and that down here i'm not pressing on too hard i'm not i'm not going for the lighter green i'm just sticking with the mid-tone green and then in with the dark green as well here's the dark green which is the night green and like say this is quite a blue heavy blue content you can see that look now black just for a few different touches there and believe it or not that's the water nearly done because all i need to do now is go back to my prussian blue there you go push them blue and we'll again back to the brush all i'm going to do you've got to make these strokes quick go make these strokes quick don't hang about too long with the brush strokes get enough paint on the brush i'm taking the paint off the brush here get enough paint on the brush and do it quickly because i'm gonna go through all of those other colors pushing blue because of course that is the blue of my sky and what i should do when i put this on i'll be moving those are the colors as well and they'll create the color of the water so i'm going to start off down here in the bottom look now you can see them softening up to the water's edge there and you've just got the colors of the building showing in there slightly there that's the water that very very easily now once i've got all of those wet colors on my brush just softening a little bit here and there but i've got a dirty brush with those wet colors so i'll just go into the path with that look there that's my pattern sorry pasta now wash my brush out squeeze out and just take a couple of bits of light out here then wash out squeak it out take some more out just armed are you squeezing the brush between my fingers take out that's a very effective technique i like all effective techniques people go go that's good i'll have some more than that and you end up with no colour left you're slow to tighten out bits now that water's still wet now all i need to do just to finish it off a few darker touches here and there this is dark sepia i mean it's dark sleepier yeah dark sepia i'm just edging the side of the path there look with that and all that's still slightly damp i have a little bit underneath there where the water meets the bank a couple of bits there now actually a little bit there as well and these are just going to be left as pencil marks grass there a bit now once that water is still wet i just want to finish off here with a few bits of brass coming in from the edge there that's the dark cpu again now a little bit of the golden old cup and a little bit of green which is the night green the darker one and there we go job done and there we go a very simple drawing which is then made into a painting with that's the beauty of watercolor pencils you're making a drawing you're ending up with a painting tin of 24 that's all you need really dab it like i said there are so many huge tins and sets that you can buy 24 is about as many as you can ever use to be honest 10 of 12 even if you're not out that much a tin of 12 is a good tin but tin of pencils one brush pad of paper you've got everything you need paper again is the lantern rough you can use the sketchbook as well if you want with ordinary cartridge paper in but i like to get some texture on them and that's why i like the lantern roof paper there are a couple of books with watercolors the standard one of course the one that's everyone's bible is the charlie evans pocket book for watercolor artists that little book is just full and packed with tips and techniques absolutely round with tips and techniques and people keep that in their paint books because it's a very handy size and it's a reference book to solve so many problems and the good news is you might be watching this in 10 years time from now and think what's he talking about but it's january 2021 and the acrylic book across from the absolute beginner has just come back on sale again it's been out of stock because it went to reprint because it sold so many copies but it's now backing on my shop hope you've enjoyed that have a look on my website charlesart.com everything that i use is for sale on there at vastly reduced prices um and i hope you've enjoyed that should be doing another one next week which will just be normal watercolors love it to see you bye
