What do you like best?

The interface is very easy to use, it is less expensive than the competition, and I don't use it every day, so it's not a service I am willing to shell out a ton on as far as a monthly fee. airSlate SignNow is fair.

Copy countersign proof

good evening everybody so one of my subscribers the other day asked me how I got physical copies of my book made where my books made that I was showing on one of my videos without having them published so today on their request I'm going to be showing you how to use KDP to order a proof copy of your book without actually publishing it all the way now what you'll need to do first obviously is you're going to need to sign up for an account with KDP if you don't already have one for those who don't know KDP has basically replaced createspace they bought it out is my understanding so they are the new createspace essentially so you will need to create an account it's just like creating a email account or something like that so you just go ahead and set that up with username password whatever jump they ask you to sign up for I'm not going to show you how to do that you can figure that out for yourselves it's not not difficult so anyway once you're signed up for an account and you sign into your account this is the first page on KTP now as you can see I've got you got a couple of books in here because I do now this one's only in here this was like a draft I made because I was fidgeting with their cover creator tool but I can't get it to go away so I've got two of the same book in case you haven't noticed but what you're gonna want when you don't already have your book uploaded and all that jazz is you're going to want to go to either paperback or kindle ebook if you're doing a kindle ebook however seeing as this is to give you information on how to get a printed copy of your book a proof copy you'd want to select this option right here I'm not going to click that because I'm not going to do this from scratch I'm just gonna kind of walk you through with one of mine so let me go ahead and show you once you click this paperback option right here it will take you to this first screen oops if it doesn't boot me out hold on I just logged in and it's booting me out there we go all right it does that a lot by the way um you will probably notice that it will kick you out part way through the preview er loading up that happens frequently just so you know so this is the first page that you'll see and you'll have to fill out when you go to set up a paperback copy of your book on KDP you'll be expected to put in whatever language it's in the book title and subtitle series info author name descriptions whatever now I'm going to tell you just right from the get-go before we get too far into this that anything you might read during this demonstration of my book or the back is one copyright and two it's very rough drafts with this particular version that's uploaded so no judging allowed at all so anyway this is the first page that you're gonna see and it has some that stuff that you got fill in and then you just go ahead and go to save and continue and I will tell you that quite a few of the parts of KDP seem to take forever to load I'm working on Utopia Internet 2 which if you're not familiar with it it is pretty fast but um anyway this is the second page that you're gonna come to and this is where you can either put in your own ISBN if you have purchased one of your own or you can get a free two KDP one my understanding of the difference between these two things is that if you purchase your own ISBN numbers then you are your own publisher KDP is does not get listed as your publisher is my understanding but don't quote me on that I'm I haven't looked a lot into that yet and I don't know what kind of difference that actually makes so we're gonna move right on through here you got publication date all that jazz so you can choose when you're gonna actually publish you've got the print options as far as your cover and your internal parts of your book now I always choose black and white interior with cream paper the white paper is just a little harsh on the eyes for anybody who has to read too long and color and cheer with white paper I'm not really gonna need because I'm not gonna have any color things that need to be colored in my book by the time is printed but you might trim size I usually choose 5 by 8 just because it's the closest thing to like a normal novel size to me I don't write particularly long books so that size tends to cater well to this size a book that I have but experiment with it and figure out your own bleed no bleed matte or glossy I personally have learned the hard way that I actually prefer glossy the first couple of books I ordered were matte and it looks real nice until you get any of your fingerprints on it because it messes it up real quick so anyway this is the first part you're going to come to here that you'll have to upload your manuscript now with this eye I really really recommend doing this at a PDF file as it says here right here it says we recommend using PDF it will let you upload other formats and stuff but anytime I've tried doing other formats it messes it up in the in the preview err which we'll get to here shortly so with this I'm not going to upload a new one cuz I already uploaded one earlier and I don't need it I did one specifically for my one book and this is the demo one that I made so I did that earlier today just thought I was prepped with this the next thing that you come to after you've uploaded your manuscript in here is the book cover now you got a couple different things that you can do here you can either upload the cover that you already have that's like a PDF or something I'm not gonna do that because I need to figure out how to use I need to figure out how do you software that'll do that but you can also use their cover creator tool now I'm going to show you what that is because it is kind of interesting and by interesting I mean wildly disappointing so we're going to wait and let this load let's go a little bit faster here we go like I said no judging me because this is just a rough rough mock-up so here is basically the cover that I kind of made as a mock-up cover for my own print when I did my first draft so that I could read through it without having to read it off a screen right after NaNoWriMo now the first thing it's actually gonna have you do but since I've already done it it's not showing it first thing that will typically pop up is this choose design screen alright and then here's the different designs that you can choose from that it has a like I've mentioned in my previous video where I talked about the pros and cons of KDP vs. CreateSpace there are significantly less options in KDP than there were in create space I think great so he says like 28 - like 36 different designs you can choose from and as you can see there's six on this screen there's there's five on this screen and that's all you get as far as these design options and as you can see a lot of them are just very very similar to each other there's not a lot of choices you get but in this particular instance I did pick this one right here so we're gonna just stick to that one we're not gonna do anything with it so this is what we've got we've got this and it's warning me that my images are too low resolution honestly I have not found that that was a problem with this image it came out really nice and sharp on my particular book regardless of the fact that it's telling that it's low res so let me just show you around the cover creator a little bit more there's not there's not a lot of options with this cover creator in comparison to the CreateSpace one I apologize if you can hear my dog in the background so you can choose your color schemes down here you've got a bunch of different options and here you can if you wanted to pick from a variety of colors for different parts of your schemes there's like three different main colors that go into this you can mess with these as you wish the other thing you can do is you can pick different layouts and they have several of these they have one two three four eight so a and about yeah they have about eight of them so again it's a little bit more limited than some other ones but or at least that createspace was you can also choose like font styles for your writing and they're a little bit limited as well as you can tell there's not well I guess they got a few more options and some of the other ones but it's still a little limited and that's pretty much it for that now from this point what you would need to do is you're going to need to hit preview and let's see how long this takes to load because it was taking a while earlier today when I was doing this I will say that I always kind of laugh at KDP when it has a really long loading screen like this sometimes it'll say it's gonna be a couple minutes maybe get yourself a coffee or something that it kind of cracks me up so anyway this kind of shows you a preview of what your cover would look like without all the little line tracings and all that jazz and that's that so you would want to save and submit from there that little pop-up that you just saw is basically saying that if you want to alter anything again later you gotta save it again and all that jazz so we're back to this page again with the ISBN and the cover of stuff the next thing that you would need to do after the cover is you'd have to go to launch previewer and I'm gonna go ahead and launch this it'll probably take a moment to load and well that's happening I'm gonna grab my dog and try to get him to stop barking little so as you can see this is taking a while to load now what they're basically doing is I guess checking over all the little details like your gutter spacing and and your fonts and all that jazz just to make sure there's no problems that would prevent them from actually being able to print your book so we're just gonna hang in there see how much longer this takes I've had it take up to 45 minutes to be honest with you so if that's the case I'll go ahead and fast-forward through this part but as you can see this can take a little while I guess while we're waiting for that we'll go ahead and talk about a couple other things with this now I won't be able to show you this because I'm not going to actually print a proof copy right now because I don't need another proof copy I'm waiting till I'm done with this draft and then also like two more drafts before I order another copy for myself not in the business of wasting that much paper but with with this the only difference that I've noticed between the proof copies and actual copies that would be getting sent out because there is some differences or at least one difference majorly with KTP that was not an issue with createspace create spaces proof copies just came with a little sheet in the back that said this is a proof copy or something along those lines this is an unedited proof or something along those lines whereas KDP actually has a little banner that goes across the front of the book I did show this in one of my other videos where I was talking about the pros and cons of KDP oh look it seems like it's going but um with that that is the major difference you're gonna notice between a proof copy and the actual copier book so this is the the half the previewer tool thank you and you can pretty much see what your book would theoretically look like from front to back in here and up here on the left it'll typically show you any sort of problems or anything that's in it that are gonna cause it print problems and if you do have any major problems like your gutter size is not the right size which is something that I run into frequently little tip because this is not a formatting video I will probably do a formatting video sometime in the future but uh what if you get an error that says your gutter size is not sufficient remember that if you're working in Microsoft Word what KDP calls your gutter which is the middle of the book where your book in the center is what Microsoft words calls you're outside margin when you're setting up your margins so you're going to want to increase your outside margin in Microsoft Word if it's saying that your gutter size is not sufficient anyway if you do have any major issues that it does not like it will not allow you to approve this button will be grayed out and you will only be able to exit Print Preview err you cannot edit anything in Print Preview er you are stuck looking at what you've got and and going from there so this is kind of me just flipping through and you can see that this is how I currently have it formatted I haven't done all my formatting yet as you can tell there's nothing up at the top and the top margin yeah and there's probably a bunch of little issues here and there but you can basically flip through your entire book make sure that all your chapter headings are in the right spot they've got sufficient spacing from the top of a page if you're doing spacing one thing I have noticed is that if you do not do a PDF version when you upload into this the previewer will screw up where chapter headings are you'll have like for example this chapter 2 heading might be over here right underneath this paragraph even though it's not how your Microsoft Word document is or whatever that you upload it into it so that's pretty much that one thing I do feel I should mention because createspace used to have this really awesome tool when you did the previewer and it was somewhere up here there was like view 3d copy or something and it would show like a 3d rendered image of your book from the outside as it would look once it's printed that would rotate and it was awesome KTP does not have that unfortunately it's a little annoying cuz I kind of liked that and it was fun to print my book and fantasize about how it was gonna look like that when I got it anyway I just wanted to claim about that for a second so we're gonna go ahead and approve and we're gonna move on for this video I guarantee is getting far longer than I wanted so back to this page again with the ISBN all that jazz we done the print prove previews and this little summary thing is gonna pop up now this is gonna tell you what your printing cost is meaning how much you have to pay for your proof copies I believe that is also the price that you would pay once you publish it if you want to order copies yourself to sell where they're not having to sell them for you however I am not sure about that because I haven't published anything yet so I'll get back to you on that but as you can see that's pretty darn reasonable for ordering your own copy of your book that's printed and all that jazz so next page is going to end up being the pricing of your book and a breakdown of what your royalties would be let me just go ahead this let this move here there we go so we got this and you got your distribution options and all that jazz I'm not going to go into that you got your price and I've just got a random price in there to kind of show you how this works and you got this drop-down thing which we're not going to get into but uh I just use the amazon.com one and you've got your royalty rate and your printing and your and all that jazz right here now when you get to this page do not hit publish your paperback book unless you want to publish it seeing as you're watching this video just to get a proof copy you don't want this button you want this proof copy section right here so if you hit this it's going to take you to a place where you can order yourself proof copies now you can select quantity up to five is the highest it seems to go at a time and then you have to choose which marketplace to do it from I just always do amazon.com now I am NOT going to hit the submit proof copy request button because I don't want one right now but typically that's what you would hit next and it's gonna I believe it takes you to a thing that basically says that if I remember right it says that your order will appear in your Amazon cart within the next I want to say it's 24 to 48 hours if I remember it let's see if it says something right here no it does not but um oh here we go so it says within 24 hours of receiving the email so see so oh that's what it was there was this extra step so what you're gonna get is you're gonna get an email that hat with a link to complete your proof order you've got to do your payment and all that crap so then once you get your email which should arrive within four hours I've always had them arrive within about two hours however and I've done this about twice but it says within four hours and then you need to complete your order within 24 hours so you'll end up having to go to your Amazon cart and actually pay for the books and checkout and then have it shipped to you so that is pretty much it there's not much more to that as far as getting a proof copy made that's pretty much it this is how you get back to the home page by the way where your books are and yeah that's how you set that up anyway I'm not gonna ramble much longer because this video is probably very long as it is so I hope that that was helpful please put any questions or comments that you might have down below in the comment section and I will try to get back to you if you do have any questions let me know also if you would be interested in me showing you at least some brief formatting that you can do if you want to be able to print yourself a proof copy without having to go through all the formatting that you typically would let's just say you're just on first draft and you want to do your first read-through but you don't want to read it on a screen or something like that so you want to order yourself a proof and do it that way I don't know but let me know if a brief formatting video would be something you're interested in otherwise I'm gonna let you guys go for today you guys have a great one bye bye
