Countersign leader training application template for summer camp
thank you kirsty um my name's sarah stevenson and i've got my colleague jerry pennycook with me today and we are from the early career team here at the general teaching council for scotland and jerry and i are just going to walk you through very quickly the application process this afternoon um and then free up some time for questions so as as kirstie's mentioned um there is the opportunity to ask questions in the chat pane at the side so as and when we're going through certain aspects of the the short presentation if you have anything that comes to mind please use that facility and we'll look at those at the end we won't be stopping halfway through our short presentation to deal with questions on that section we'll just keep going until the end and then um look at them all then so just to give you um an idea of what we'll be covering this afternoon we're going to be looking at the online application for registration process we're going to just just talk you through and give you a reminder about the teacher induction scheme and the flexible route we're going to touch on dual registration and sponsored sponsored students we're going to walk you through the new online epvg process and we'll just keep you up to date with time scales and communication that you can expect from us so just as a quick reminder hopefully you've had an opportunity to watch the youtube video that was sent around to all universities if for any reason you haven't managed to see that please do let us know when we can send you a link that's absolutely fine and for many of you you may have taken the opportunity to attend one of the question and answer sessions that i also provided to the universities um for those of you that haven't uh hopefully not all of this will be new and you will have um heard about some of the different steps that you need to be thinking about so to teach in a school in scotland whether it's in a local authority school or an independent school it's a legal requirement to be registered with the general teaching council for scotland and that's what you're doing at the moment in terms of your online application for registration with us and at the moment you'll be thinking about either choosing five local authorities and um choosing those for preference sorry or the preference waiver which effectively means that you agree to be placed anywhere in scotland or for the teacher induction scheme or alternatively you may be considering opting for the flexible route which we'll touch on in a little moment there may be some of you who are secondary qualified that are also studying towards dual qualification with subjects and will review those subject combinations in a short while and some of you may be in fact sponsored students and that's where your probation year would be expected to to take place back in your local authority that are sponsoring you um we would like to also touch on disability um making is aware about disabilities and also any exceptional personal circumstances we're going to talk you through how to fill in the form the application form the direct debit mandate and the epg payment and your online declaration so what do you need to do to become a fully registered teacher well there are currently two routes in scotland available to you firstly there's the teacher induction scheme and we'll refer to that from here on in as tears or the flexible route so the teacher induction scheme is funded by the scottish government and guarantees you a full-time place in a school within scotland and the flexible route is exactly that slightly more flexible and you can work that part-time and you can work that in a range of different settings as well so in terms of the teacher induction scheme your eligibility is actually determined by your university they will have given us a provisional list of who is eligible for the scheme as i said it's funded by the scottish government and it gives you guaranteed deployment in a local authority school okay it takes 190 days to complete and that is the equivalent to one continuous school year and it can only be undertaken on a full-time basis in the teacher induction scheme you're also entitled to a reduced class contact time of 80 so the other 20 is used for your own professional learning and meeting with um supporters and all that sort of um development that that you have within school time support is given at school you would be allocated a supporter and also there are probation managers and each local authority that will support you with professional learning all the time you are working towards meeting the standard for full registration which you will you will be completing throughout the course of the the year the flexible route is slightly different you can be employed by a local authority or an independent school or even overseas as well anywhere outside of scotland so by overseas we also are including um ireland and england and wales and in that category so anyway effectively outside of scotland you can choose your own place of work you will have to find that placement yourself and you can also work part-time should you wish to it takes around 270 days slightly longer than the tis scheme and that takes into account that you might be doing some of your days on supply or on shorter term contract basis so um however if you manage to secure in work in a school for the duration of one year you can request full registration providing you've obviously done all of the the different requirements to meet them full registration after 190 days regardless of whether you're on the teacher induction scheme or the flexible route you'll be given a profile an online profile um and you'll need to work towards certain areas to to prove that you're meeting the standard for full registration you must find your own post and there is no guarantee of work and there's no guarantee of supporter time in school for the flexible route however we have just recently launched for all of our flexible route probationers our flexible route virtual school so here at gtc scotland we are doing our best to provide that additional support for you and you will have access on the flexible route to that very specialized area where we're able to provide you with help support and professional learning and a whole host of other materials in that space again for the flexible route you must still be working towards the standard for full registration to gain your full registration just a note about your qualified teachers this just applies to those of you in secondary who are studying two subjects at the moment in your university um here is a list of the only combinations that are currently permitted through the teacher induction scheme these are laid down in partnership with the scottish government and are therefore we cannot accept any other combinations so science is anything from biology chemistry and physics social subjects and religious educations it's any two from geography history modern studies and religious education modern foreign languages any two from french german italian mandarin and spanish in terms of computing that can be combined with business studies or mathematics drama with music or english physics with mathematics and gallic with any other subject so i'm just going to hand over to my colleague jerry now who's going to give you a walk through what the application form itself looks like so just ask jerry to take control of the screen okay all right on the online as far as the online application goes first of all i've got two things to say one some students you might be amongst yourselves um haven't received the link yet but that is being worked on and no matter how long it takes your application will go through successfully and will be accepted so apologies if that applies to anybody listening here um the other thing on the online application is anything with uh an asterix has to be completed um that's something anything without an asterisk is optional but anything with an asterix has to be completed um the the first page is to do with personal details uh matriculation number your title your name for name surname uh gender uh there's a drop down box and that can be male female or you prefer not to say that's that's the three that they've got um then you put in your address details um your day birth a mobile number and an email address so we can contact you uh the next section step two these will be pre-populated with your university and course so you basically can easily go through this part and then the next part is the teacher induction scheme uh for most people it will be a yes uh that you wish to participate and then after that is the case of whether you choose to go on the preference waiver payment option which means you're prepared to go anywhere in scotland any local authority and that can be from the shetlands down to the borders uh dumfries and galloway the western isles anywhere so if you take that box you're prepared to go there if you decide later on that you're not prepared to go there for any reason then you'd have to come out the teacher induction scheme so if you give that a good thought before you you tick it if you weren't doing that um you'd have to pick five preferences now it's you've probably heard this before but if you're gonna you've got to try and pick five areas that you know you're gonna try to get to some people will be more difficult um but say for in this example it's glasgow you're probably trying to get all the areas around glasgow so it'll be um a bit easier to get to then say pick in glasgow and then pick in somewhere like the highlands or something like that uh whatever five you put down it's have a good thing because you could you could get your your fifth preference there's a very small percentage do get but you could get it um the next question regards to denominational schools which in scotland means roman catholic so if you've got a preference for teaching in a roman catholic school then you would put yes and that information would go to the scottish government and they'd go to the local authorities looking for vacancies based on that information if you if you're fluent in gaelic and if you are you probably deal with an organization called bona garlic um you'd click yes they are but that's only if you're if you're fluent in gaelic and there's questions there's more information regarding fluency levels um that you can click on after that more information it goes to teaching gaelic and which is to do with born the gaelic and the contents things like why should we become a teacher in gaelic how do i qualify as a teacher in gaelic and there's various other things in there the next part is fitness to teach and is to do with um convictions uh character and conduct things like that um you'd you'd have to have the your date pvg membership and your scheme number for this section and if you don't have them uh the place to go back to is disclosure scotland and because you'll have done a pvg for your university we might still have the information but disclosure scotland are the people to go to if you're not sure of that information pvg membership status um very it can be child adult child and adult um because you're teaching in schools that'll probably be child although your pvg might be child and adult whatever it says on your previous disclosure certificate you put in there convictions there's a whole lot of information about convictions and there's ones where it always has to be disclosed if um if you're not sure then you can download um these these these pdfs here to look to see if it relates to you but um the question basically is have you ever been convicted of an offense and it's either no or yes if you clicked on yes we'll ask you is to give a description of what the the conviction was the date the outcome um and you just fill in those boxes if that applies to you it goes down there's similar ones current investigations or proceedings regulated body good character and conduct um have you been ever been barred and you just go through these questions and again they're now it asks about the different the details the day the outcome so if any of that applies to you you'd fill in those boxes disability and exceptional circumstances if you consider you've if you consider you've got a disability it could be a mobility it could be anything then you put down you fill in the boxes and the nature how it might affect your travel to your local authority for tis well you're doing your tis in the school and any reasonable adjustments you might need now it could be you have a some kind of issue with mobility which stops you traveling far to to look another local authority it could be when you get to the school it could be that you might need lifts and if there was only stairs that would be a problem and it's making the local authority aware of all this and any reasonable adjustments you might require to be put in place by an employer so if this applies to you put as much information as possible it might be that you you get letters or or you've got documents etc from um gps or specialists and it might be that you need to send this in and so we can have a look at them uh and all everything would be taken in confidence for that uh that's for certain and it's the same with exceptional circumstances you give a description you see how it would impact and again as much detail as you can so so people at gtcs can have a good look at this step six is just putting in your your your bank details to pay by direct debit for your gtcs registration fee as it says they are currently 65 pound um this would be taken in july usually it's middle third week of july but it can vary and and so we'd have that so it can be taken quickly and efficiently the money and you just fill in as it stays there your code account number and the bank account holder uh finally there's a declaration uh you you go through this uh whether what you've said is true complete and accurate and if you haven't told the entire truth well as possibility things might go to the investigation people that you would just tick the box and that's everything's okay and then you'd submit it you'd submit the application to ourselves and at this moment in time 1176 people have actually applied so that's about a third of the people that's pretty good after a week week and a half so that that's the the um online application while you do the online application there's a bit when you get just before you get to submit where it'll ask you to make a payment for an epg application existing pvg and update um and so once you pay the money you'll get an email and it'll have this and i'll have the details of the pvg uh application now this is the first time we're doing it electronically which hopefully i'll make things a lot easier certainly from your point of view i hope uh and these are the details here um it's the first ones are like application type and there's a drop down box there and again it's child adult child and adult and you'd pick the one that applied to you most of the time for any pvg it'll be a child and then you pick your title mr miss misses whichever and then you fill in just like the application you fill in your son for name surname gender date of birth uh your pvg membership id number the 16 digit number that you get in your disclosure certificate if there's been any changes your personal details now usually this relates to if you've changed address it can be anything but quite often it's change address so if that was a yes then you would you put in text to see what it was like saying you changed your address etc contact details and these are optionals you can put them in or not put them in as you wish and the regulatory body details are you registered with a regulatory body and quite often students think that because they've done the application they're already registered but this isn't the case and because you're not registered until you've went through the whole process which finishes in july next year um so but some people are members of the treble sc for sure and they would put yes or any other regulatory body that you belong to and then you put the name in the code you put in the number and you just fill in that section this section four is to do with um you're making another declaration and you'd read through it and if you understand that and you agree with it you put in you type in your signature and you put the signature date at the bottom of section four section five is sorry so just a little bit difficulty here section five is to do with payment and and that's just it'll always be registered body invoice um and what that means is basically you pay the money to the gtcs and the gtcs then pays the money disclosure scotland is just the way it's that's the way it is um and then the egg number six um will the work be kind of at home that'll be a norm um and then optional it would be teacher confirmation identity when you send in a copies of id like passport birth certificate driving license we check them and then cross these boxes off before things are sent away and then whether it was myself or one of my colleagues what we do is just the same as you do we type in our name we'd put in a code and then once that's all completed we'd send away this forum to electronically to disclosure scotland and that is that is basically um how that works and hopefully that'll be the electronic version will be really easy for you to complete so that would that concludes uh going through the pvg application and the online application thank you jerry i'm back again we've got a storm brewing down here so unfortunately it knocked the wi-fi out the cast is very kindly um taking over the rest of the powerpoint for me so um just a recap as well on the time scales involved we require you to complete and submit your online application registration by the 18th of december please so there is a window before christmas that requires you to do that and if we can just get back kirsty can you share that screen again thank you oh you can go back one thank you um so just even though you have submitted your online application please remember that you can actually change your preferences up until the 12th of february next year 2021 um the end of may beginning of june is when you will receive a text from us that will invite you to log on to your gtcs portal account that will have been created through the application process and that's where you can view your information where you have been allocated if that's if you've chosen to take the teacher induction scheme and at the end of june beginning of july you'll be given notice of your direct debit payment um for 65 pounds which is your initial registration fee prior to it coming out of your nominated bank account and the last slide is just to let you know how you can get in touch with us and for any more information and we have a dedicated website for probation all things related to probation um the first one that's the into teaching that's in and then number two teaching dot org dot uk on twitter you can find us at gtcs uh senior strategic manager elaine napier or myself i'm under the gtcs development officer's twitter account so you can find us there we also have our main gtcs website you can find jerry and the rest of the team available at the student admin at gtcs.org dot uk email address so that's a whistle stop tour through the presentations and apologies about my connection dipping out there so um kirsty i wonder if you're able to help us out with any questions that have come in yep um so just got a few questions here and if anyone has questions that they'd like to ask as we go through these ones please feel free to do so and sarah just mentioned the entry teaching website um and i hope to get a recording of this webinar up there within the next couple of days so it's worth checking i think i'll put a link in a follow-up email as well and just if you wanted to watch this back um so yeah we have a few questions to get through um someone has said that they haven't received the email about registering yet but i think you both said that and you're still in the process of getting those emails out and someone's also asking about the the youtube video and that had been sent to universities if we were able to share that i don't have a note of that link but um hopefully yeah we can work that one out so um also might want to just uh double check with the university as well because those were sent to the course leaders um but we'll we'll look into getting that available to you probably again on the inter-teaching website maybe on the student student teacher section of that thank you and someone's saying that there are they think there's a bit uh something wrong with their um application as for set three they don't have the option to select yes and that no no has already clicked and it won't let them change this and when they say that there's some questions on that step as well that they're unable to see and what might they be able to do to see if there's an issue uh we'd have to if the um they'd have to email in if they haven't already then we'll get to um but usually when it's usually when it's like got no it's the person that's not eligible for the teacher induction scheme but i i'd have to i'd have to look into the details of it and then check with other people you could maybe just email into the bottom address there the student admin um email address and um we'll take a note to keep an eye out for that one yeah i've got a note for this person's name and details so we'll be able to keep that going um someone is asking if you might be able to go over the um denominations section again or just explain um yeah the denominational section it's it's basically asking if people um if they wish to teach in a denominational school and if they do they put in yes and that information like the rest of the information goes to the scottish government so they can ask for vacancies um from the from the local authorities to cover um all these positions and subjects and i think as well it's worth um checking the scottish catholic education website to see which local authorities might need the catholic um teaching certificate and yeah there's a there's a link on the into teaching student page for the scottish catholic education service and they'll be able to answer any queries or more in-depth queries that you you want to ask about denominational skills thank you um we have a few pvg related questions and so some people are asking um about the epg application is that something that they need to go and do again if they already have a paper one and some people said that they already have a uh already received in august so this another step that they have to do yeah um which it depends what people were talking about if it's people that are starting the course or in the final year of the course they'll have to do an epg there might be people out there that have there were deferrals from last year and they might have done an epvg in which case they wouldn't have to do another one yeah so if as jerry is saying if you're brand new onto a course this year or or you're indeed um coming up to your fourth year on a course you're coming straight effectively if you're coming straight to us from a university um you will be required to do them because it goes the epg will be attached to us as an organization for registration purposes um but as jerry's pointed out if you are deferring um or you deferred last year and you're coming to she will have already likely done an epg for this purpose but if you're unsure you can always check with us and we can check the records that we have if you're in that deferral situation okay um someone a few people have said that they've gotten a couple of pvgs already um and they're just asking which one they would use in terms of a start date in in terms of who was that christie all right in terms of a start start date and yeah the issue date yeah the issue date sorry i would say it was the one where the original one where they've done a pvg when they originally done a pvg that would be the start date because that's when they join the the the membership ppg membership yeah because anything subsequent to that's just an update so the original original one would be good um again some people just wanted to clarify about um the registered body registration body part and if they're not part of any other registration body then they they wouldn't take yes because they're not part of us yeah no no the vast vast majority of people will be no because and this is they're applying for registration with the gtcs at this point and it's gone through there's a whole load of processes which end in july with um past confirmation having done any pvg and paying their 65 pound registration fee and there's no other issues there's nothing getting investigated about them or anything like that that's when the final things usually pay in the fee and that's when people are registered so the answer would be no for the the vast vast majority of people there'll be a few that are in a regulated body like the treble sc there's always a few people there and occasionally midwifery or nursing um you get the odd one but it's usually be a no someone here is saying that they're already sponsored by their local authority um but when they logged on it's still asking them to pick the the five and what would they do in that case in that case um they would put the one where they're getting sponsored first and then uh later on in the process when most people have done it um probably myself i'll go through all the all the students are meant to be sponsored by local authorities and make sure that that is the one they're going to and that'll get sorted out believe me but as long as they if they're going to fill it fill in the forum and pick the one that you're getting sponsored by is number one just to make sure you've got the form the application and sorry uh and then we'll deal with that to make sure you you've got your sponsored local authority great um someone's asking um so they're about to go on to do them a master's um when they finish their course and so they won't be starting their probation next year what would the case be for them well people i'm i'll make an assumption there's glasgow university and it's amy duke students because they've got the option of doing they do a teaching qualification after four but they can do a master's after do another year in which case what happens is they apply they do the application and apply for registration and then what happens is the people that are doing their fifth year the masters get deferred to the next again teacher induction scheme year is the way it works um someone's asking that in terms of the who the counter signatory would be and would that be the university no the counter signatory because it's the gtcs they're asking for this form to be completed because we're the organization asking for it and it would be it would be people from the gtcs that would counter sign it the university would counter sign ones where they're asking the students to do a pvg but we're a separate organization and we're asking for an update so it's ourselves that countersign it same way any other organization we ask for an update is their staff that counters china okay and a couple of people are just asking about email they've maybe started the application or they're halfway through and they've they're looking to come back to it and is that possible and if they've lost the link and what what would would they be able to get the link we sent to them right if they started then they stopped they should be able to save it um pretty certain um and if they lost a link they could email in and would get the link sent to them again thank you we have quite a lot of questions here i'm just um there are a few that are quite specific um and i'm not ignoring them um just for the sake of it it's just that some of them are quite sort of individual and we will be able to get in their details so if you're sitting waiting for your for your very specific question to be answered and we'll hopefully be able to get back to you by email with those and just because they are very very specific um i've just so many questions um some people are asking about what um would constitute um id someone saying they only have two forms of id for the epdg application or and someone saying that there are there's another option would that be um yeah other worksheets are quite often um bank statements obviously what you don't want people to know um yeah i think utility bills things like that online bills anything like that if it can if it can cover a date between maybe two if it can cover date of birth a photograph and where you live um that would be okay that'd be fine quite a few of these questions have already been answered so i'm just trying to find any new ones okay yeah i think most of these have already been answered in one way or another um i definitely i mean we want to recognize that this may not be the forum for everybody's question you know just um reading it out and as you said there are some that will be very specific so we'll get back to you um about those just so that you've got that privacy to discuss your situation with us just in confidential and sorry confidence very confidentially don't get my words out um and and we'll get back to you through the the student admin email in that sense so yeah um and like i say a recording of this will be available and for you to have a look back and just go over any parts of the application process and if it was if your question was related to that and and can be answered and then in the video that sarah and jerry mentioned also you should also be able to get that from your university as well just i think i'll just finish on this one and like i say if there are any questions that haven't been answered um i'll make sure to send those over to the guys and they can answer them individually and or you can get in touch with that student admin address and if it's something that you really do need answered and just to end on just because i've got a couple of people asking about um term addresses versus their home address that they're going to be living in when they finish their course and or if they've changed address and in relation to their um epg what what might they need to do um it would be preferable to get um some kind of id from where they are now um like you know like a utility bill or uh i don't know a phone bill or whatever um to show where they're actually living just now things like that could be added to things like a passport or a birth certificate or something like that um if that's proven to be a problem email us in and we'll we'll look at how we can get around this and i think as well am i right jerry that if your address has changed since your last epg or your last ppg then you need to uh yeah tick the box that says other um in the you know on the ppg form and then there's space to explain what the changes are as your personal details change there that would be that would be okay well thanks guys and thanks everyone um for joining us today and as i said any sort of questions that haven't been answered you will hopefully be able to enhance things in the next few days and you'll also be able to um come back and watch recording of this um and that email address there the student has been one and any questions can go to that inbox as well and and the team will try to answer as soon as possible and so once again thank you to everyone for coming along today thank you to sarah and jerry for presenting and and i hope everyone has a lovely evening thank you kirsty thank you thanks you
