hello there are you thinking of applying to graduate school and looking for a scholarship if your answer is yes keep watching most scholarships require an essay alright and an essay is an integral part to eat whether or not you get a scholarship okay and so as a university professor I have reviewed several several several several applications for scholarships at the university level at the departmental level even for some companies I've helped them review scholarships on international companies I can't mention those because typically you have to sign some kind of non-disclosure agreement forms but I'm really torn up scholarship this video contains information on how to write a very good scholarship essay and it also also give you tips on how to make how to make us a more competitive so in my experience the most common essay question is please tell us about yourself and why you are applying for the scholarship how will discuss you to help your personal and professional goals honestly this is like 80% of every scholarship I have reviewed this is a question that is asked I don't know there's some there's some rule but I understand why this question is asked a lot because it makes sense because this is the question that can really give the reviewer and insights into who you are as a person a student and I think the future professional so I understand why this question is so common to actually literally one out of every two scholarships I reviewed ask this question so you guys are gonna include the question in the description box and honestly I would advise you guys copy that question write an essay answering that question and and that would help you moving forward because not all scholarships are gonna ask that question but since several scholarships and scholarship bodies ask that question you are already positioned because you already have this document and all you need to do is kind of tweak it the organization and and you're good to go say something so hot and this is kind of a universal question and sometimes even if they don't ask you this question directly there's a it's still kind of the same question tell us about yourself why are mine last my last video I talked about how to write a statement of purpose for graduate school and so uhm the difference so I just gonna even go over the difference the difference between a statement of purpose and a scholarship essay is that the statement of purpose is for admission into graduate school right if I convince a graduate admissions committee that you're awesome pretty much right the scholarship essay dough is to get funding to get money to get scholarships right to get into graduate to find your graduate school if you have money to go to school it makes learning so much easier right and some of you watching actually you need money to go to grad school abroad in Canada and UK Germany in the u.s. you need money and so having a scholarship is essential and having academic scholarship one of the most important things in actually being competitive for scholarship it is just conscious essay there are two things I want you guys to think about when you swing your drafting your essay right one your essay must absolutely impress the reader okay whatever any whenever a reviewer picks up your essay you want to capture the reviewer in in first paragraph you wonder if you're to impress the first paragraph okay number two your essay goes directly address the goals of the scholarship companies that advertise scholarships have goals you have to read what the scholarship is about and make sure that your essay targets that scholarship so so one of the harder things applying for scholarships is that a lot of these colors shapes are targeting different things right so one of the mistakes a lot of people make is that they they write one scholarship essay and then it's blankets throughout and then they just submit two different scholarship competitions but that's not going to get you a scholarship because you have to draft your scholarship essay must be unique to each each funding agents it's each company so so for example that you submit the purpose right you see that the purpose is um it's submit the purpose should be unique to each school same as yours your scholarship essay should be unique to each each place you're applying for scholarship okay so number one to think about 1/2 Nasir so I'm gonna read this out so read and understand the s appropriate to read between the lines right so a lot of some some scholarships I know I've been feeling some scholarships and then they ask you they may ask you write write about a time in your life where you manage the difficult situation okay so you may not actually have managed a difficult situation will sometimes you just have to mix cup up that's what it means you have to imagine things and mix them up right but there are some things that when they ask you a question like that and they ask you to write about a particular situation in your life typically they want to find out your leadership skills okay they want to understand how you handle conflict resolution they also want to get interested in depending on what your personality is like because remember these people are not going to meet you in person most cause you to the mitri person but you're going to give you a lot of money right tens of thousands of dollars or pounds so they really want to get a sense of who you are from your essay okay because they I mean they have your transcripts but your scholarship your Scotch it s it gives them it people like to peek into your personality and your life okay so they also want to find out how you can survive in a foreign country okay so those are things to look out for do you want to ask they want to find out how intelligent you are and how good of a student you're gonna be so this essay topics they're not just asking you they're not just wanting history they want to find out more about you things that you're not even thinking about and a lot of scholarship essays ask ask you about the conflict resolution or leadership skills those kind of things right because um because those are kind of students you're really interesting okay alright I've talked too much on that alright too much asking questions in the comments to hear it cookies okay um see so what do you think about he is going to be as is you want to include keywords and like key people in your slots you can see so for example you guys know John Maxwell he's God right that's good it would be is really tricky but it's really nice if it says a lot about you if you include like John Maxwell quotes in your scholarship that's it because what does he what does it tell the reviewer this person knows does Maxwell interesting cool right it means that you're actually interested in developing your leadership skills so that's just something to think about how you tell you like when you win if you if you have stuff about conflict resolution something you wanna say something about Nelson Mandela you know like but you because you're trying to show these people you're super smart you read books you're dedicated you know you're you're didn't get it to be proven yourself okay so those are just two people to kind of I desert like me to people I always include in it cuz I just feel awesome okay so um I my advice is that never have more than two quotes in your scholarship essay not more than two do anything when it's of course is just too much and it's just lazy sticking out space that you can actually be talking about yourself to books is good and never open your essay really poke don't it's just like really right so you want to start strong so vehicle are two separate quote in there you can say okay all right number three include relevant information about your background your experience ease I'm gonna make sure you want to sell yourself so when your resume it I'll shoot se you are trying to sell yourself right you're a salesperson and and what you're selling is you okay so you want to put your best foot forward you talk about giving a strong concise information about your background um you want to talk about how neat how poor you are not you don't have to report but nobody wants to give scholarships to somebody who has who comes from a wealthy home who has a lot of money you're not going to get that scholarship so you want to emphasize that you have a need for these scholarships okay so you want to talk about your background you want to tell a very sweet sweet story so remember you have watched my statement of purpose video that first your first paragraph in statement of purpose in statement of purpose can actually directly cuts up in your essay it's kind of deceiving idea whether what you're talking about yourself very concise very brief concise or powerful so that they know they can make and get a sense for who you are and they're sympathetic that's something you guys need to think about you need the reviewer to be sympathetic to you I'll tell you because this think about this reviewers you're human okay I know like whenever I review scholarships they give us a rubric of what you know what they're looking for and things like that but ultimately it is up to humans to pick people um to find so you want to make sure that these people by sympathetic and like you and it's really hard right think about it because how are you gonna make someone like you through paper like how like how are you gonna convince someone to be sympathetic and like you threw a piece of paper it's really hard but that's why your scholarship essays by at all you know he's done that's why your writing has to be top-notch because you really want to convey something you want to strike a chord with the reviewers and make them like okay so alright so number four is start writing your MC today start a draft because the issue with rent and squash is you keep procrastinating you you thought you thought it you'd probably saw sheet you wanna apply for you have a transcript do you have all the documents ready you have your references but you haven't started your draft yet if you don't start if you don't start your scholarship is in draft it's never gonna be done so dress are important it doesn't have to be perfect but start today start your craft don't dump your ideas on paper so you want to start dumping your ideas of paper and then you can't come back to eight but you have to start writing we have already messy um so started draft whatever it is that they are asking for just start writing start today I said don't mean ideas down and then you can leave it for two to three days and they come back so I am part of my job more than any majority my job is writing right and so what I do is I get a right and dump I write write write write write leave it for like two days over there keep a couple hours come back and then edit don't don't don't leave it come back come back fresh eyes so that's just something to think about you want to start today okay all right um so you wanna revise a tree bucks so remember in my other video I keep referring to my statement this video because they are connected yeah so if you haven't watch that oh and watch that um but you have to edit your essay okay that's very important to you revise and edit in your Evite's you get somebody from outside to come in revise and edit you want to get someone you trust to revise your essay for you um and provide feedback so somebody you trust and respect maybe you can pay someone to revise your essay and provide feedback so even if you have to pay a little fee just do it because this is for a bigger purpose okay this is you're trying to get if you're going to get fifty thousand pounds it doesn't I mean you're paying 1000 era to have somebody it's your work I mean guys it's huge right it's fine it's fine um so just do it okay so have somebody you trust read it as they provide very good constructive feedback for you francie so this is probably one of the best investments you can do for yourself have somebody professionally a to exci me so that the grandma is just like sweetly crisp look I'm telling you I always stress it too because I know a lot of Nigerians a lot of Africans honestly do not write it very well because they don't teach us writing it is a make them dangerous experience but they don't need teachers writing right that was something I struggled with when I moved here so writing is is difficult so you have to use this in right you have to make sure that your essays crisp like a fresh vegetable and you just wait when you review everything it's like it biting into this fresh Apple until like oh my god this person you know he's gonna be okay so this worse the miss kasha preview as fighting grammatical errors or spelling errors in se I'm one of those reviewers I'm gonna tell you yesterday and one of those reviewers then when I see grammatical errors and literally it just it just I just knock you down not your application down like three notches it made already obvious reading it but it has already ticked it my mind against you if your grammatical errors in your essay so never go over your board counts okay what happens if you apply for a scholarship the company you list your plan line the company gathers your documents and send to reviewers right so most times you have to copy and paste your essay in like a box or something some of you let's say they tell you 1000 words and you read 12 1200 words that box is in the cutoff JSA so there are times I've reviewed NFC and it stops any weird points and I'm like oh this person will record a me and so whatever the company's gonna send me the exact word limit and they're gonna cut out the other parts so you have to keep differently and even if they don't cut it out you get points docked off because you could not hold instructions I know this thing's looking so they're so they're so streets we do stuff why where is the street district because hundreds and thousands of people apply for scholarships especially the big scholarships like international scholarships so many people apply so it's the little things that we talk that that that gets you disqualified tries it going overboard limit it happen grow medical errors a lot of people have a prescribed and have a great stuff going on have great experience and great you know great things happening but so it is competitive right so the little things that get points you know right and then if you say oh everyone 90 points and a boob will get a scholarship and then you have 89 because you wait over it worth living or because he had a grammatical error like something stupid like that that's that isn't that sad just follow instructions okay okay so you wanna make sure that you research the organization you wanna know the mission of the organization the vision and the goals the objectives and make sure that your essay encompasses these also if there is no formatting guidelines always use 12-point font Times New Roman Big Dawg the spacing so that's like that's like the general rule of thumb right Times New Roman 12-point font don't Stacy she just baked like you're reviewing a scholarship think like a reviewer write your essay must be closely aligned you defined as mission and priority areas okay so it's also you want to research the organization and check what the priority areas are you think you want to make sure that you understand the company's priority the priority areas and tailor your essay to face the priority areas okay if they're if you're a biology major you want to do your masters in let's say biology but you're more interested in like microbiology so you can tailor your essay to microbiology do you just get what I'm saying make sure that it is tailored to the priority areas of the funding button
