Countersign graphic design order

the smallest changes can make the greatest impact on your graphic design today's video is about graphic design tips for 2021. we're gonna share eight tips and we're gonna have a lot of fun and help you improve your graphic design skills and create better work so without further ado let's go ahead and jump right into it [Music] hey guys welcome back to another training video today's video is about graphic design tips but before i do that i wanted to ask you to please hit that subscribe button hit that like button so that youtube shows more my content to more people just like you very grateful that you guys are here today's video is about graphic design tips for 2021 and going forward these are things that i've been doing for the entirety of my career and things that you should be doing and thinking about when you're doing a graphic design project many of you guys are college graphic designers so you may know this stuff but some of these these things may be new to you and so if they are i want you to drop a comment let me know which ones are new and which ones did you already know just want to hear from you i want to get to know you part of youtube that i love is actually we get to build a design community so sharing these tips is to help all of us get better so today i'm gonna share eight tips that you need to have that's not gonna help just you get better but it's gonna help the graphic design industry as a whole because the better work we create the more clients are going to be satisfied and the better it's going to make us look and you're going to learn that here that's what this channel is all about so the first graphic design tip that i have for you today number one is don't use more than two fonts i see graphic designers do this all the time they use two three and four fonts they got a headline font and they got a sub headline font and then they use another one for the smaller characters and they use three or four and sometimes even five fonts what happens is it makes your design look very busy very crowded and it's hard for the eyes to actually follow the message that you're trying to get across and ultimately it's the message inside of the design that actually is the most impactful if you do it right and that's another video for another day but you need to make sure you focus on your messaging and if you use too many fonts it's going to be hard for people to follow and actually capture the message you're trying to share within the design so my golden rule is is use only two fonts and just as a little side tip within the fonts is don't use too many variations like if you do a script font and then you do a a mono type font you don't want to compare serif and sans-serif fonts together unless it actually is like a very fancy and sophisticated font with a sans serif you got to be very careful about using sans serifs and serifs together i try to keep the same font class so i'll use two serifs or two sans serifs together i don't typically mix the two and that's just my design preference for myself is i'll use a bold montserrat and then i'll use an alternative thinner montserrat in my design but i typically won't use like a baskerville and a monstera in the same design it just throws off the messaging and it's not as congruent so that's design tip number one design tip number two is visual hierarchy what visual hierarchy is is the principle of ordering things that are the most important like the main headline or your hook and then basically working through your content and your designs and what is the most important element and piece of that design where do you want the eyes to go and we're going to talk about that in another tip but visual hierarchy helps you order things of what's the most important piece like if you're doing an event somewhere you want to highlight the date of the event the title of the event and what the main theme or what the main hook for that is that event is so visual hierarchy is a very important piece of design i see a lot of designers just do everything the same size they make everything the same color they don't highlight anything in their design so it just looks bland and it just it's r not really easy to follow so i want you to lay out the visual hierarchy of your designs so you order it and strategically place things so that the messaging comes across clear and concise like what is the most important part if you want them to remember the name of your event and the date of your event putting those two things together and making the nice big bold title of the event and making the actual date right under it so making sure that you're strategically ordering things is really really important when it comes to visual hierarchy and design tip number three is using the right colors there are amazing tools out there like palatin and even inside of adobe illustrator there's the color guide where you can do the analogous and contrasting colors and monochromatic colors you want to find the shades that scientifically match and pair well together i've seen a lot of people use hot pink with like muted colors you want to make sure that you're picking a good color palette in your design but it's just going to throw off the whole look of it and you're not going to get that visual impact that you really need and you deserve i i use a lot of the analogous and monochromatic because i like to use shades within my design but i make sure that the science of my colors actually matches up so using a darker color with a lighter color one of the common things that i do that i do see is people using a dark dark just like the ultimate rich black with like an ultimate rich purple or an ultimate rich green that is really harsh on the eyes it's better to use a little bit lighter of a black and a little bit lighter of a purple and matching those together and they'll still contrast very well you want to make sure that you've really got your colors together design tip number four is using more white space i can personally attribute to this when i first started my design career you have all this information that the client wants inside of the design and they want the dates and the times and the events and the details and every little detail on there but you got to remind the client that it's the messaging that's most important if you put too much verbiage in the design it's going to overwhelm them and they're not going to really remember any of it so keep it simple create curiosity peak the emotions and capture their attention you don't have to overdo the amount of information you put in there and to do that when you do less actual verbiage and content you'll be able to use more white space white space is a beautiful thing companies like apple companies like tesla they use a lot of open white space and it allows the eye to digest the information more clean and keep it simple and it allows you to strip away the things that are truly not important to that initial message the objective of that design is always the most important piece that you should be thinking about when you're going into any design is what is the outcome that i want from this design is it a phone call is it a form entry is it a visit to a website anything that doesn't go towards that objective is a waste so use lots of white space design tip number five and this almost goes along with color but contrast i see a lot of people using contrast the wrong way doing a black and white flyer with the darkest black and the brightest white that's nice sometimes but it actually can make it look kind of cheesy and not make it look really well thought out so making sure that you have the right contrast where it's not solid black and solid white but it's maybe a lighter black and a and a gray and some off tones or some earthy tones make sure that you have the right contrast within your designs and not just within the colors of the fonts in the background but also within the images that you're using images that actually match up with the rest of the design if you have a really nice beautiful vibrant colored design and you're using a muted image in there it's not going to look right so make sure that you reflect the colors that are in the photos of your designs with the fonts and the colors that you use on the background elements and all the design elements that you're not using photos that don't match the rest of the design i see people do really poor contrasting designs and i want to make sure that the contrast of your designs look beautiful they look elegant they look classy or they're just memorable to begin with that's a really big one that i see a lot of people fall short on is not doing the contrast right or not having any contrast at all if you just did a black flyer with like light gray lettering it's going to be really hard to read or sometimes people will do a black background or a white background and they'll use a really light text or if you do a black background with red text or dark blue text it's gonna be really hard to read so make sure that the contrast is enough to where it's nice and legible but not too much where it's harsh on your eyes design tip number six is where are you directing the eye every graphic design piece whether it's a logo design whether it's a flyer design whether it's a website design doesn't matter what the design is you need to be directing the eye somewhere and you know that people read from left to right from top to bottom that is just a kind of a given thing in design school that they teach and just even if you're a self-taught designer you should know that but making sure that as you're creating this design that you direct their eye to what's most important whether it's a visual element of a person that you're trying to capture their attention and using some sort of body part a muscle or somebody flexing or an eyeball or whatever that is you want to direct your eye to the elements that are the most important and then it also ties into that hierarchy again is you need to make sure that your you have a flow to that design and so if you direct their eye to things that don't matter and you're taking their attention away from the message which is really the most important part of any design the visual elements and making it beautiful is great but if the message doesn't come across clear then you're really going to struggle so make sure that you're directing the eye to the messaging rather than just focusing so much on the artistic and the creative aspect as artists we can tend to get carried away with the creative and the artistic stuff like illustrations and characters and the photography in the background but if you're going to do that you need to have those leading lines that lead them up to the main focal point of the main objective of that design design tip number seven is bleeds many of you guys nowadays are using your graphic designs specifically for web so you're using social graphics and youtube graphics and web designs and banner designs and ad designs online but it's also important to remember that these designs that you have can also be used in print whether it's a postcard a mailer a t-shirt a business card a flyer whatever you're doing offline you need to be thinking about those things when you're doing your design even when you're doing online because it needs to be transferable in many many cases so i want to encourage you guys to use bleeds and if you're not familiar with bleeds r there should be another video i can make one in the next few weeks for you guys specifically on bleeds what should your bleeds be this is one of the most common questions that i get emailed and asked and this is one of the most common mistakes that i see is they put an eighth of an inch of space between the text and the edge what's going to happen is if you send that thing to print it's actually going to cut off your text so my general rule is is i use about a quarter of an inch of text of white space of a border basically and to the edge so that it doesn't get cut off and then i add another quarter inch from that point to the actual text so i give myself anywhere between a quarter and a half an inch of space sometimes an eighth of an inch uh between the the quarter inch and the and the actual text so it's really important that you use bleeds in your designs because a lot of your stuff needs to get printed and when you're printing they need to have their stuff what's called full bleed and if you don't want something to get cut off like text or a background element or in a character or an illustration you want to make sure you give yourself a bleed all the way around around your design and again it kind of ties into that white space the more white space you leave the cleaner it's going to look the more professional and the clearer your image is and that leads me to design tip number eight your message i talked about that a couple times throughout this but your message within your design is the most important what is the objective of the design is it a phone call is it a form entry are you trying to generate leads are you just trying to raise awareness and brand the company when you actually do these types of things and put your messaging first and then you build your designs around it it comes out way more beautiful so the design tip that i have for you is actually a content tip as well because i want you to use your messaging as art you can do really neat things with the messaging you can split up text you can cut the text you can do all kinds of really cool stuff but don't go too crazy to where it's no longer legible you want to focus on making sure that the impact of the message what the ultimate goal is is the design revolves around that not the other way around you're not creating a design and then adding in the messaging you're creating the messaging and then building your design around that so the messaging of your design is very very important i've created a lot of videos around your messaging i'm gonna create more videos around your messaging so i need you guys to like and subscribe to this video because these eight tips are gonna help you improve your graphic design skills significantly and that's why i wanted to make this video today because i'm seeing a lot of poor quality artwork from designers and i feel like they're missing these big eight tips so that's what i got for you guys today make sure you hit that subscribe button let me know which design tip that you like the most and which one that you you use the most in your designs so thank you guys so much for watching my name is adrian boycell i look forward to seeing you guys on the next video and as always keep looking up
