hello everyone and welcome to the Bard cave and today's video is a painting of a miniature beholder from Knowles's marvelous miniatures now I'm just using the paint sets the Noles has marvelous pigments using the adventurous paint set the Underdark paint set and it monster paint set with this beholder I was kind of going for a space sky a cosmic sky which involved me using blacks pinks and blues and of course white to get the stars so you'll see me currently basing the Hobby holder in black [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this miniature comes with removable tentacles there are four that just have the eyes and they're also for that seemed to be firing one of the many kind of powers and spells that the beholder can cast I was thinking whether I should have maybe one or two firing a spell or maybe none of them firing a spell but seeing as it can do so many and I didn't want it to be subtle at all I decided to put everything that was casting a spell and paint it black ready to use on this figure they can see me painting the gums and with the details I had looked up a lot of like cosmic monster artwork and a lot of the styles were in a very neon kind of palette and I really really liked that it was so striking that that's what I wanted to kind of do the details in the face of the beholder with [Music] now you can see me adding color to the spell effects now a lot of the kind of more professional let's say videos that I watch of painting like the clear stuff they tend to use like inks now I'm a beginner I only really have the the paints from the sets BIOS as markers pigments when I get more confident I'll move on to like buying some extra stuff but I wanted to show that you can still get very good effects in very good detail by simply just using the paint's that you already have rather than using special inks or washers etc etc [Music] [Music] [Music] so now I'm adding some pink to get that into that galaxy sky there's lots of artwork online that you can find and they tend to have pinks and kind of blues to create this effect [Music] so now you can see I'm also adding a blue almost to kind of outline the Pink's that I've already added now the idea was to get a fairly thin coat I didn't want it to be too prominent I liked to see the black kind of still in the background of all the paints because it's set against this kind of pitch black space sky now I'm going in with the darker shades and just making little pockets where this shade can be more prominent now I'm adding the tentacles back in so that I can blend these colors into the tentacles and rather than painting them separately and have them look disjointed I go back over with the blue and the pink side found that I had maybe spread them a bit too thinly and they were kind of just looking more of a smudge rather than this kind of pop against the black sky and I even then go back and add a bit of black back into the mix just to kind of split up and create better shapes within the the colors that I'd added [Music] now I'm painstakingly adding a bunch of white dots to act as the largest stars on this kind of image and eventually I go in with a smaller brush and I create much smaller dots and then eventually I'll use the technique of kind of rubbing the brush against my finger to create a spray for the really really small minuscule details of stars [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] now I'm going in and painting the tongue and I wanted to go from like this a dark green to a kind of more neon green towards the tip of the tongue as the life kind of is able to catch the tone I went with the black inside of the mouth because I wanted it to seem almost like a black hole you know we're in the fact that it was space and it was also a monster the idea of having a pitch-black mouth was really appealing I go in and make the eye a big popping yellow I guess the idea was that this was like maybe a planet or even a Sun like a very closed star and I did this for all of the eyes to me the really pop and stand out against the the other colors that were already present [Music] so I went back and added white to all the protruding kind of spikes on this figure I've thought about what colors I'd wanted to make them I did think about like a yellow or an orange or something another kind of neon color but eventually I settled on white I felt it it seemed like something that added to the starry sky without taking away from anything else [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Here I am creating a kind of base color for the teeth again going with that kind of neon nightmare kind of vibe I started with orange and then you'll see me adding a layer of yellow not going all the way up to the top of the T so that orange still shines through and then finishing it by tipping the teeth with with white so with the yellow you can see me maybe starting one-third of the way down the teeth to keep that kind of orange baseline at the top [Music] [Music] now am I gonna add in a highlight to the gums just to let some of the wrinkles in the guns kind of pop and now you can see me out in the whitetips to finish the t-bar although it kind of makes it look like candy corn but that's fine here I'm adding some white streaks back into the sky and now I adding something to the base I didn't have anything like hodge podge or any of that molding clay I'm simply using some stuff from the army painters battlefield base set and now because I didn't want this beholder to be subtle at all I decided I'm just gonna go with the spell effects and I superglued them in to make sure that they stayed there finishing off the base with some gray paint and soon adding just a lighter gray just to highlight now we have it the cosmic nightmare beholder very neon very aggressive quietly I saw but hopefully something that my players will remember when I throw it at them in our campaigns so thanks for watching and join us again at the bard cave
